When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Napa Valley Red Wine
2021 / 750 ml.
An exquisite wine, relying primarily on Cabernet Sauvignon from a single estate. Aromas of lavender, dried herbs and grapefruit pith combine with flavors of firm fruits and cocoa on a structure of abundant, powder-fine tannin and a mouthwatering finish. This wine is refined, detailed and delicious, with as much elegance as energy. Best 2026–2040. (Elaine Chukan Brown)
So much graphite and volcanic character on the nose with metal shavings and gunpowder. Black ink, iron and rust, too. Blackberry and blackcurrant undertones. Full-bodied but not overpowering, with chewy and juicy tannins that are long and very subtle. Superb finish. From biodynamic grapes with Demeter certification. 91% cabernet sauvignon, 4% cabernet franc, 3% carmenere, 1% merlot, and 1% petit verdot. Drinkable now, but better in 2027. (James Suckling)
Lastly, the 2021 Proprietary Red was just bottled in July of this year and checks in as 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Carmenere, and the rest Petit Verdot and Merlot, brought up in 64% new French oak. It offers pure blue fruits, spring flowers, violets, and spicy oak, with a beautiful chalky, mineral note that comes through more on the palate. It’s elegant, full-bodied, has ultra-fine tannins, good acidity, and terrific length. It’s another gorgeous wine that will evolve for 15+ years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
Marked by scents of cherries and raspberries, with just the barest hints of cedar and mocha-tinged oak, Quintessa’s fruit-forward 2021 Proprietary Red Wine is wonderfully smooth and supple in the mouth. It’s medium to full-bodied, suave and silky, all class and elegance, without any sense of excessive bulk or rusticity. If one were to have a complaint about it (hardly likely), it’s that it comes across as almost too polished, too elegant, too easy to drink. (Joe Czerwinski)

A blend of Round Pond’s estate vineyards in Rutherford and Oakville, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is deep, layered and super-expressive. This delivers the goods big time. All the elements are so well balanced. The 2021 feels just a touch compact today, but hopefully, the mid-palate will flesh out in time. Even so, there’s so much to admire here. The inclusion of fruit from M-Bar makes a meaningful difference in this cuvée. (Antonio Galloni)
This wine is a standout in the school of plush, velvety and chocolaty Cabernets. A dark color and generous dried-fruit aromas lead to milk and dark chocolate, candied cherries and cream on the palate. A soft blanket of tannins wraps them all up loosely. Best through 2030. (Jim Gordon)
The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate offers a more serious profile, with pure cassis and dark fruits as well as a touch of minerality in its tobacco and scorched earth aromatics. Medium-bodied and concentrated, with ripe tannins and beautiful balance, it will evolve for 10–12+ years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
A blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Syrah, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a solid effort, redolent of black cherries and baking spices, with hints of cinnamon, sage and dusty earth. After spending 20 months in 65% new French oak, it’s medium to full-bodied, soft and approachable, a charming, easy-drinking wine to enjoy now and for the next several years. (Joe Czerwinski)

This wine offers dense, full-bodied blackberry, black currant confiture and dried bay leaf on the nose. The midpalate has flavors of black strawberry, tangerine, watermelon and star anise, interwoven with spicy vanilla cream into a silky, dry finish. Pair with spicy tuna rolls. (Tonya Pitts)

Boysenberry and açaí berry fruit gives this a slightly exotic profile, but it’s finely stitched with apple wood, sassafras and singed anise notes to keep it honest. The polished finish lets a chaparral note chime through the flashy fruit. This should have fans for sure. Drink now through 2036. 66,186 cases made. (James Molesworth)
From their Pope Valley vineyard, this wine is rich and relaxed, warm with oak spices and broad in baked cherries and dark plums. Aged in both French and American barrels for a supple, soft effect and lingering finish. (James Suckling)
