From the Producer

Estancia 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is a beautifully balanced red wine from the coastal-influenced vineyards of California. Aromas of dark cherry, plum and vanilla lift from the glass, revealing a sense of berry compote. Layers of dark berries create a velvety mouthfeel, underscored by threads of lightly toasted oak, caramel and a drop of raspberry on the finish.

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Fresh red fruit and dark wood spice aromas make for a very approachable and familiar nose on this widely available bottling. There’s decent heft to the palate, where soft tannins frame flavors of dried meat, dark cherry and leather. (Matt Kettmann)

WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2023
This TD-9 Cabernet Sauvignon, not to be confused with other TD-9 red wines, shows an amazing clarity of dark fruit. Its deep black cherries, blackberries and touches of black olive embody classic Cabernet. Beautifully integrated tannins lend a posh texture that’s still bracing enough to help the wine age and improve. Best from 2026–2036. (Jim Gordon)
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/26/2023
The first vintage where they’ve put Cabernet Sauvignon on the label, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon TD-9 is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, and the rest Malbec, raised all in new barrels. Medium ruby/purple-hued, it has a killer nose of caramelized red and black fruits as well as lead pencil, dried flowers, and toasty oak. It’s balanced, medium to full-bodied, and just about impossible to resist. There are roughly 10,000 cases produced, and it’s a wine readers will love over the coming decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Dried cherries, blackcurrants, chocolate, sweet licorice, anisette and hints of moist earth on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied, refined and velvety with a softer, powdery tannin structure. Attractive core of ripe black fruit with a lingering finish. Cabernet sauvignon. Better after 2025. (James Suckling)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 5, 2024
Bright and juicy, with a fun burst of blackberry and boysenberry fruit laced with hints of sweet bay leaf, violet, singed apple wood and licorice root. Good brambly energy runs underneath, giving this a vibrant feel as well as ample structure for the cellar. Best from 2025 through 2038. 9,000 cases made. (James Molesworth)
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Dec 2023
Shafer’s TD-9 is now a Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine, with the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon TD-9 being composed of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot and 3% Malbec. Offering up scents of cherries, wood spice and vanilla, it may lack a bit of complexity and concentration, but this full-bodied effort still hits all the right notes, finishing long and velvety. Aromas of ripe blackberries, cassis, roasted hazelnuts, cedar, graphite and bark. Full-bodied with grainy, chewy tannins around a core of ripe dark berries. Structured and long. Better after 2025. (James Suckling)

A luscious, chocolaty aroma comes from partly American oak barrels for some coconut and vanilla tones over lavish dark plum and blackberry flavors. The texture is velvety smooth but firmed up by fine-grained tannins. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
