Clau de Nell Violette 2018 / 750 ml.

Item#: 97032

RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Oct 2021
The 2018 Anjou Violette is deep, rich and very intense but elegant on the pure and refined nose, with dark fruit, tea and kumquat aromas. Full-bodied, deep and generous on the palate, this is a full-bodied, rich and generous, silky-textured, refined and tensioned Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon blend that is one of the highlights of the vintage. Fabulous! A must buy! Tasted at the domaine in June 2021.

Svelte, moderate tannins envelope plum and cassis notes in this medium-bodied red, with details of loamy earth, savory spice, tobacco and forest floor. Complex and harmonious. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2031. 500 cases made, 98 cases imported. (Gillian Sciaretta)
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021
The 2018 Anjou Cuvée Violette is full-bodied and rounded, offering a soft embrace. True to its name, it does smell of violets as well as wood smoke, spice and dark black fruits. There’s concentration here, no doubt due to the low yields off 70-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon vines and the 45-year-old Cabernet Franc. The tannins have been well handled and provide a frame of chalky structure. The merest whiff of barnyard meets the florals on the finish, but it’s kept in check.

Where It's From

Region / Loire

View more wines from Loire

Following the path of the Loire River, the Loire Valley region runs from North Central France's Sancerre district near the town of Orleans, all the way to the Muscadet district on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. With such a vast topography, the region's wine offerings are understandably diverse. Some of the signature grapes you'll find as you traverse this region include Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Cabernet Franc.

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

Lithe and refined, fresh and unadorned, with smoked plum and red currant woven with earth, bacon and licorice root notes. Salinity is the signature here, with succulent acidity driving the snappy finish. Drink now. 1,000 cases made, 183 cases imported. (Kristen Bieler)

Clau de Nell Grolleau 2011 / 750 ml.

2011 / 750 ml.

Item #: 80409

WS9191 pts. - Wine & Spirits - April 1, 2015
This property, located between Angers and Saumur, has been farmed under biodynamics since 2000. Anne-Claude Leflaive and her husband, Christian Jacques, had worked with the owners since 2006 and purchased the domaine in 2008. It includes 4.94 acres of grolleau, the 60- to 90-year-old vines planted on silty clay made up of sandstone and red flint over tuffeau. Sylvain Potin manages the estate, aging this wine for a year on its fine lees, half the lot in old Burgundy casks, the other half in vat. The result is a fascinating Loire red, its silken tannins carrying depths of juicy black currant flavor. The structure provides a little bitterness to balance the fruit, along with a note of pipe tobacco. Pour it with something rich, like chicken liver mousse.
RP8787 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2014
Grolleau is — by now — a rare grape variety planted in the Loire valley. The rather high-yielding and early-ripening variety has an accentuated acidity and does not deliver high alcohol. This characteristic makes the former Loire classic interesting for producers such as Anne-Claude Leflaive, Christian Jacques and Sylvain Potin, the joint venture of Clau de Nell who strive for digestible, well-balanced wines with lower alcohol levels. The inky colored 2011 Grolleau is from 60- to 90-year-old goblet vines on a silty-clay terroir, comprising grit and red flint on tufa (limestone). Aged for 12 months on fine lees in fifth-use Burgundy casks and another 12 months on fine lees in vats, the unfined and unfiltered wine shows an attractive, well-balanced bouquet of red and black forest fruits (including elderberries and sloes) intertwined with delicious floral and earthy/fungous aromas. It is a fresh, straight, rather light to medium-bodied, meaty and slightly spicy wine with an accentuated acidity and an unpretentious expression of fruit. The ripe, meaty tannins are exclusively from the skins and give this attractive red a serious expression and a good structure. This wine should be served at 16° C.

RP93+93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Oct 2021
The 2018 Anjou Cabernet Franc is from sandstone and red silex soils and opens with a deep, intense and concentrated dark berry and cherry aroma intertwined with iodine and some plummy notes with crystalline sugar notes and baked blueberry aromas. Silky, rich and intense on the palate, this is an elegant, deep, refined, long and complex Cab Franc with a tight tannin structure, and kumquat and somewhat brutish aromas. The wine has great aging potential, but it’s very individual, with dense fruit but ripe and elegant tannins. Tasted at the domaine in June 2021.
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021
The 2018 Anjou Cabernet Franc is serious and structured, showing the ripeness of this vintage in its breadth, ripe fruit and slightly heady aromas. Produced from 45-year-old vines that yield 35–40hl/ha, this is soft and tender on entry, but the tannins build like a square frame, leaving a structured finish. Integrated use of oak is evidenced by a hint of vanilla from a small percentage of new barrels (less than 10% new). The finish is fragrant with lingering violets and savory notes; there is a question over the light barnyard element and the slightly drying finish. At this early stage, it’s a little awkward and needs some time — or if you don’t have time, a little air.
