View more wines from Bordeaux

Bordeaux is known the world over for its exceptional wines, particularly red blends made with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes, among others. These Cabernets aren't typically the full-bodied Cabs you get from California, but rather medium-bodied wines that emanate elegance and sophistication.

You'll also find some refreshing Bordeaux whites and, of course, Bordeaux's famous dessert wine, Sauternes.

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

A rock star of a second wine already offering pleasure, the 2018 Amiral De Beychevelle checks in as 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc that comes from the younger vines of the estate and slightly more sandy soils. This makes for a more up-front, fruit-driven wine that reveals a deep purple hue as well as sumptuous array of blueberries, black cherries, lead pencil shavings, tobacco, and spring flowers. It’s classic Bordeaux on the nose, yet has a wonderful sweetness of fruit, ripe, polished tannins, no hard edges, and just a balanced, seamless style that’s ideal for enjoying over the coming 10–15 years. Dark fruit with cedar and herbal notes on the nose. Some meat, too. It’s full-bodied with firm tannins. Juicy and savory character on the palate with a balanced structure. Flavorful finish. Second wine. Try after 2023 when it will be more together.

Chateau Lascombes Margaux | Grand Cru Classe 2018 / 750 ml.

Grand Cru Classé
2018 / 750 ml.

Item #: 99108

JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, March 3, 2021
Complex nose, blending notes of elderberries, black cherries, spices, cedar, and violets. It’s full-bodied and structured with elegant tannins and a fleshy texture. Flavorful, savory finish. Try after 2024.
JD94+94+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/11/2021
The 2018 Château Lascombes performed brilliantly in my tastings. It’s a rich, medium to full-bodied, impressively textured Margaux with loads to love. Lots of jammy currants, blueberries, vanilla bean, flowers, and camphor emerge from the glass, and it has ripe yet present tannins, no hard edges, and just a balanced, classy style. It needs 3-4 years to integrate its oak and will keep for 25 years or more. The blend is 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Petit Verdot that was brought up in 60% new French oak. (Jeb Dunnuck)
WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2021
This large estate to the north of Margaux village is performing well. There is still a tendency to overuse wood aging, but powerful black fruits will provide balance as the wine ages. With its structure and dark tannins, this wine has a long-term perspective. Drink from 2027. (Roger Voss)
RP93+93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
The 2018 Lascombes is deep garnet-purple in color, slowly unfurling in the glass to reveal evocative cassis, black cherries and blackberry pie scents, followed by hints of pencil lead, menthol, lavender and cedar chest with a touch of damp soil. The medium to full-bodied palate gives a great core of muscular black fruits, framed by firm, grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and savory. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2021
A bright juniper note leads off, followed quickly by a mix of warmed cassis, steeped plum and blackberry compote flavors. Silky and fine-grained in feel from start to finish, with a late flurry of singed wood, savory and dark tea details on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2023 through 2036. 29,000 cases made. (James Molesworth)

A bright, focused Bordeaux Superieur with currant and wet-earth character and hints of walnuts. It’s round and juicy with ripe tannins and fruit and a long finish. Shows structure. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
WE8787 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2020
The estate, situated in the Entre-deux-Mers, has produced this softly textured, spicy wine. Wood aging has brought out the blackberry fruits and balanced acidity to give a wine that will shortly be ready to drink. Just wait until 2021. (Roger Voss)

Perfumed and polished aromas of stewed blackcurrants, cherries, cloves, dark chocolate, lavender and musk. It’s full-bodied with firm, fine-grained tannins. Sleek, refined finish. Pretty strength with elegance. Try from 2024.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2021
Fresh and racy in feel, with a zip of acidity driving through the middle, lending support to the mix of blackberry, plum and cassis flavors. Dried anise, alder and lilac accents add range on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2022 through 2034. 12,165 cases made. (James Molesworth)
JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/11/2022
The 2018 Château Marquis De Terme also showed better than on release. Based on 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot, it has a ripe, round, medium to full-bodied profile as well as gorgeous currant and mulberry fruits supported by ample chocolate, truffle, and leafy herb-like aromas and flavors. The tannins here are beautiful, and it has an expansive mouthfeel and a great finish. It’s another beautiful wine that I’d be thrilled to drink any time over the coming 15–20 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2021
In this wine, black fruits and tannins give both a dry core and a rich texture that is already beautifully integrated with the fruit. Fresh acidity adds to the wine’s attractiveness and aging potential. Drink from 2026. (Roger Voss)
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 22nd Apr 2021
Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Marquis de Terme comes skipping out of the glass with bright, cheery notes of kirsch, black raspberries and blackcurrant pastilles, followed by hints of aniseed, damp soil and bouquet garni. The medium-bodied palate is delicately styled with just 13% declared alcohol and plenty of youthful, dried herbs accenting red and black fruits, supported by approachable, chewy tannins and bags of freshness, finishing with a lively lift. It’s a great example of a fresher style for this vintage. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)

J. Wilkes Cabernet Sauvignon

2017 / 750 ml.

Item #: 92524

WS8888 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2019
A high-toned acidity keeps this wine’s notes of ripe plum and fruit nectar in line and on point.
VN8787 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2019
The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles Highlands District is a bold, pungent wine. Savory herbs, tobacco and cedar add a strong aromatic presence. Although a very good wine, the Cabernet is not quite as compelling as the other wines in the range, while the savory style is on the edge of being distractingly vegetal.
