Catena Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 / 750 ml.

Item#: 75977

JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, April 2, 2020
Lots of spice and hints of dried herbs to the currant and berry aromas. Medium to full body. Firm, lightly chewy tannins and a balanced finish. Drink or hold.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2020
A majority Cabernet Sauvignon with 7% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot from Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley that spent 12 months in French barrels, resulting in a degree of complexity. The nose offers black currant, blueberry and pepper and a hint of pyrazine, along with sandalwood and incense notes. Juicy with fine, firm tannins that fill up the mouth before the flavorsome finish. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
As with other wines, the 2019 Catena Cabernet Sauvignon feels notably fresher and more vibrant than the wine from the warmer 2020 vintage. In 2019, it was a blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot that felt very integrated, with the grapes complementing each other. The palate is medium-bodied with moderate alcohol and notable freshness. The tannins are fine-grained, and the finish is clean, long and fresh. 360,000 bottles produced. (Luis Gutiérrez)

Where It's From

Region / Mendoza

View more wines from Mendoza

Mendoza is Argentina's biggest wine region, and with a footprint that spans a diverse geography, it's able to produce a wide array of wines. Chief amongst them are Argentina's ever-popular Malbecs, but you'll also find world-class Cabernet Sauvignons, Chardonnays, and more produced here. The geography is diverse, but tends to be mountainous, and the higher elevations play a sizable role in grape growing, providing cooler temperatures at night.

Country / Argentina

View more wines from Argentina

Argentina took the wine world spotlight in the late 20th century with its plush, smooth Malbec. While the popular red grape still reigns supreme, Argentine wineries are increasingly putting forth excellent examples of multiple varietals, all at the extraordinary bargains that make this region so accessible.

Now the fifth largest wine-producing nation in the world, Argentina enjoys high-altitude and low-humidity vineyard sites, comparatively unencumbered by insects and disease. Argentina’s unique terroir has captured the interest of such internationally celebrated winemakers as Paul Hobbs and Michel Rolland, both of whom have projects in the country.

Currant, blackberry and stone aromas follow through to a full body with firm, balanced tannins that are rather chewy now, but will soften in a year or two. Serious bottle of cab! Drink or hold.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
There is a combination of herbal, spicy and creamy notes in the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon that make it quite expressive and attractive. It has a soft and approachable palate, velvety and tender, with round tannins. This is classical, still produced with grapes from Luján de Cuyo.

Noteworthy for the vibrant acidity, which drives plum and cherry flavors forward. Features a mineral underpinning, with hints of bitter olive on the firm finish. Drink now through 2028. 3,000 cases imported. (Aaron Romano)

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles Highlands District is a bold, pungent wine. Savory herbs, tobacco and cedar add a strong aromatic presence. Although a very good wine, the Cabernet is not quite as compelling as the other wines in the range, while the savory style is on the edge of being distractingly vegetal.

JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, August 12, 2022
Ripe peach, dried mango, dried jasmine and buttered toast. It’s full-bodied with crisp acidity. Concentrated layers of ripe and dried fruit and a vivid, subtly smoky finish. Drink or hold.
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2021
The 2020 Chardonnay Catena is 90% from the Uco Valley, fermented with whole bunches and aged for up to eight months in barrels. Yellow with a golden sheen. The expressive nose presents notes of linden blossom, apple, creamed corn and hazelnuts. In the mouth, it’s unctuous and indulgent but also has decent tension, a terse texture and long-lasting, bold favors. The oak reappears on the rather concentrated aftertaste. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
The medicinal and balsamic 2020 Catena Chardonnay has pungent aromas of bay leaf and white flowers and a dry and balanced palate with some chalky sensations and tasty flavors. It has moderate ripeness for a warm and dry year like 2020 and good freshness. 282,000 bottles produced. It was bottled between October and November 2020. (Luis Gutiérrez)

VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2017
Bright dark red. A bit muskier and lower-toned on the nose than the Catena Alta Malbec, offering scents of dark berries and chocolate. Then opened quickly and gained in verve, showing e fine-grained texture and a high-altitude light touch to its spicy red and darker berry flavors. Pungent acidity is keeping this juicy wine quite tight today.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2016
The 2014 Catena Alta Cabernet Sauvignon changed the blend slightly and was harvested earlier to preserve freshness. The idea worked nicely, obtaining a balanced and fresh varietal wine, still a little young, and even if the puppy fat is still there, the underlying acidity and freshness is great. 30,000 bottles produced.

Nicolas Catena Zapata 2016 / 750 ml.

2016 / 750 ml.

Item #: 93742

RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2019
The 2016 Nicolás Catena Zapata has not been released, and they are going to sell the 2017 before it. This is the one wine, together with the Adrianna Vineyard Mundus Bacillus Terrae Malbec, that is sold through the négoce in Bordeaux for Europe and Asia. This is backward, serious and austere, with terrific balance and great length. This is a blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon from Gualtallary and 31% Malbec from Nicasia. There is also some 8% Cabernet Franc that seems to add a touch, and in 2016, it didn’t need irrigation because there was enough rain. This seems to follow the style of the 2013, a little tight, perhaps because of the Cabernets. This is nuanced and complex, with very good integration of the varieties and the oak, fruit, acidity and mineral texture. One of the best vintages for this bottling. 74,400 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2017.
JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, March 27, 2019

Honeysuckle, ripe pear and some dried apple. So perfumed. Full-bodied with incredible intensity and length. So much green-apple character and lots of flowers. Dried mango, too. The touch of flor growth in the barrel gives this unique character. Goes on for minutes on the finish. Endless, vibrant acidity. Minerally texture. Drink now or hold.
RP9898 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
The very minty 2019 White Bones Chardonnay comes from select rows within Block 1 of the Adrianna Vineyard in Gualtallary. The name refers to the soil underneath these rows, which is layered with calcareous deposits and limestone as well as fossilized animal bones — remnants of a river that used to pass through the region, closer to Los Cerrillos del Jaboncillo; it’s an old soil in a new formation. 2019 is a cool vintage, and the wine is only 12.6% alcohol and has notable acidity (8.1 grams), and it always has a more extroverted personality than the more austere White Stones. It has tons of aromatic herbs, thyme, lavender, lemongrass, rockrose and balsamic with some curry (the wine had some aging under flor), and it has a vibrant palate where the acidity is effervescent and lively and the finish salty. It’s vibrant and sharp, more in the style of a Chablis. Truly outstanding. This is a very recognizable wine. 6,000 bottles were filled in May 2020.
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2021
The 2019 Chardonnay White Bones Adrianna Vineyard is from the eponymous vineyard in Tupungato and was aged for up to 16 months in used French barrels. Pale yellow with golden flecks. The intense aromatic profile is led by herbs such as basil and a crystal-clear lavender whiff, alongside cedar, vanilla and a backdrop of green apple. Broad and creamy on the palate but with a terse texture and superb freshness, this has an unctuous feel. White fruit aromas appear at the back of the mouth. Ending with a lovely, herbal finish, this is a wine inspired by Chablis but possessing a wild purity all its own.

RP9999 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
The amazing 2019 White Stones Chardonnay comes from a select group of 27 rows planted on lot I of the Adriana Vineyard, and the composition of those rows is soil with white oval stones covered by gravel. The Adriana Vineyard is planted at an altitude of almost 1,500 meters above sea level, in the district of Gualtallary in Tupungato. The stony soil prevents deep root growth, providing optimum drainage. This soil, which is very poor in organic matter, contributes to the vines’ permanent stress conditions. The cool nights allow for very slow ripening, optimal acid retention and low yields.
JS9797 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, April 8, 2021
A very fresh, bright white with sliced apple, pear and light cream. Full-bodied with a very pretty texture. Mineral, chalk and lightly salty mineral undertones. Intense finish. Really takes off. Drink now or hold.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2021
The 2019 Chardonnay White Stones Adrianna Vineyard is from the eponymous vineyard in Tupungato, Uco Valley, and was aged for up to 16 months in used French barrels. Bright yellow in the glass. The nose offers hazelnuts, herbs and a whiff of oak alongside hints of linden blossom and acacia. Intense and concentrated in the mouth, this has a skeletal structure and a compact, saline, tangy palate before powerful aromas of fruit and oak gather at the back of the throat to deliver an elongated finish helped along by the acidity.

Beautiful blackberries and green tea with some blueberries. Medium body with beautiful balance, freshness and whole-berry sensibility and brightness. Subtle and sophisticated. Drink or hold.
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
The 2018 Catena Alta Malbec shows more evolution and ripeness than the 2019. It’s varietal and floral with a mixture of red and black fruit, sweet spices and aromatic herbs. It has moderate ripeness — in fact, it’s a little lower in alcohol than the 2019 — a medium body and fine-grained tannins, with good grip. 162,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in October 2019.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2020
A Malbec from Mendoza made from a selection of parcels in different terroirs in Primera Zona and the Uco Valley that spent 18 months in French oak, this is complexity in a bottle. The ripe, layered, evolving nose delivers plum and violet notes followed by a hint of acidic cherry over a woody backdrop. Fleshy on the palate, it offers the good grip and volume typical of Malbec as part of a satisfying combination that also includes a terse texture and juicy freshness.
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2022
Well-structured and juicy, with dark cherry and plum tart flavors that feature firm tannins and acidity. The spicy finish offers baker’s chocolate notes and peppery hints. Drink now through 2024. 13,500 cases made, 3,500 cases imported.
WS9090 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 10/21
This is a selection of individual blocks from the Catena vineyards in Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley. Each block ferments separately on indigenous yeasts, with lees stirring to stabilize it and reduce the addition of sulfur. Eighteen months of oak aging leaves an impression that dampens the finish, but the beginning is spring-like and vivacious, like a meadow in bloom. It’s got the firmness to match up with summer sausage and hard cheeses on a picnic.

RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Jun 2018
The 2016 Catena Alta Cabernet Sauvignon was bottled November 2017 and was also available for tasting even though the wine will be released in 2019. It’s a phenomenal effort of freshness, elegance and finesse while being faithful to the variety. Really impressive. 9,600 bottles produced.
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2018
Bright ruby-red. Less deep on the nose than the 2015 version but pungent and fresh, with red fruit and spicy red pepper aromas accented by an herbal suggestion of tobacco leaf. Leaner and less sweet than the 2015 but still a bit youthfully tight. With less dimension and depth, the tannins come off as slightly dry. This wine suffers by comparison to many of the current red wine releases from Catena Zapata but it’s still a success in the context of its vintage.
