Catena Alta Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 / 750 ml.

Item#: 94940

RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Jun 2018
The 2016 Catena Alta Cabernet Sauvignon was bottled November 2017 and was also available for tasting even though the wine will be released in 2019. It’s a phenomenal effort of freshness, elegance and finesse while being faithful to the variety. Really impressive. 9,600 bottles produced.
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2018
Bright ruby-red. Less deep on the nose than the 2015 version but pungent and fresh, with red fruit and spicy red pepper aromas accented by an herbal suggestion of tobacco leaf. Leaner and less sweet than the 2015 but still a bit youthfully tight. With less dimension and depth, the tannins come off as slightly dry. This wine suffers by comparison to many of the current red wine releases from Catena Zapata but it’s still a success in the context of its vintage.

Where It's From

Region / Mendoza

View more wines from Mendoza

Mendoza is Argentina's biggest wine region, and with a footprint that spans a diverse geography, it's able to produce a wide array of wines. Chief amongst them are Argentina's ever-popular Malbecs, but you'll also find world-class Cabernet Sauvignons, Chardonnays, and more produced here. The geography is diverse, but tends to be mountainous, and the higher elevations play a sizable role in grape growing, providing cooler temperatures at night.

Country / Argentina

View more wines from Argentina

Argentina took the wine world spotlight in the late 20th century with its plush, smooth Malbec. While the popular red grape still reigns supreme, Argentine wineries are increasingly putting forth excellent examples of multiple varietals, all at the extraordinary bargains that make this region so accessible.

Now the fifth largest wine-producing nation in the world, Argentina enjoys high-altitude and low-humidity vineyard sites, comparatively unencumbered by insects and disease. Argentina’s unique terroir has captured the interest of such internationally celebrated winemakers as Paul Hobbs and Michel Rolland, both of whom have projects in the country.

This wine unleashes a barrage of flavors—huckleberry, wild herbs and currants—that lose steam as the tannins take over, lasting on those sticky malbec tannins. It’d be fun to play with pairing ideas, so open it at the beginning of a dinner party and try it alongside everything from cheeses and olives to the main roast.

RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2016
There is one white in the appellation range, the 2015 Appellation Tupungato Chardonnay, which is subtly balsamic and spicy from limestone-rich soils in Tupungato in the Valle de Uco, from two vineyards, in Villa Bastías and La Esmeralda. There are pungent flavors, very good intensity and balance and the chalky sensation is nicely coated by juicy fruit. One for the table. 15,000 bottles produced. The first vintage was 2012.
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2016
Bright gold-tinged yellow. Much deeper, riper and richer than the basic 2014 Mendoza Chardonnay, offering sweet stone fruit and apple flavors lifted by saline minerality. This dense Chardonnay shows glyceral warmth but finishes with noteworthy lift.

VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2017
Bright dark red. A bit muskier and lower-toned on the nose than the Catena Alta Malbec, offering scents of dark berries and chocolate. Then opened quickly and gained in verve, showing e fine-grained texture and a high-altitude light touch to its spicy red and darker berry flavors. Pungent acidity is keeping this juicy wine quite tight today.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2016
The 2014 Catena Alta Cabernet Sauvignon changed the blend slightly and was harvested earlier to preserve freshness. The idea worked nicely, obtaining a balanced and fresh varietal wine, still a little young, and even if the puppy fat is still there, the underlying acidity and freshness is great. 30,000 bottles produced.

This has a perfumed nose of violets, currants, blueberries, pine, licorice and eucalyptus. It’s medium-to full-bodied with silky, seamless tannins and a creamy texture. Smooth and caressing. Fresh. Sustainable. Drink now or hold. (James Suckling)
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
The 2020 Appellation La Consulta Malbec feels quite ripe and round, a juicy and quite fruit-driven Malbec from a warmish place in a warm vintage. It’s quite straightforward and easy to drink. 72,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in October and November 2020. (Luis Gutiérrez)
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2023
This wine has a nose of subtle plum, blackberry and eucalyptus, complete with a dash of peppercorn. A soft palate offers juicy red-fruit and dried herbs flavors, with light notes of spices adding moderate complexity to this well-structured and fresh Malbec. (Jesica Vargas)
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2022
Offers a nice inlay of floral and mineral accents amid a juicy core of raspberry and fleshy plum, with abundant fresh thyme notes. Suave tannins arrive on the finish, which reveals a touch of smoky chocolate. Drink now through 2028. 6,000 cases made, 4,800 cases imported. (Aaron Romano)

JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, April 2, 2020
Beautiful blackberries and green tea with some blueberries. Medium body with beautiful balance, freshness and whole-berry sensibility and brightness. Subtle and sophisticated. Drink or hold.
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
The 2018 Catena Alta Malbec shows more evolution and ripeness than the 2019. It’s varietal and floral with a mixture of red and black fruit, sweet spices and aromatic herbs. It has moderate ripeness — in fact, it’s a little lower in alcohol than the 2019 — a medium body and fine-grained tannins, with good grip. 162,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in October 2019.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2020
A Malbec from Mendoza made from a selection of parcels in different terroirs in Primera Zona and the Uco Valley that spent 18 months in French oak, this is complexity in a bottle. The ripe, layered, evolving nose delivers plum and violet notes followed by a hint of acidic cherry over a woody backdrop. Fleshy on the palate, it offers the good grip and volume typical of Malbec as part of a satisfying combination that also includes a terse texture and juicy freshness.
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2022
Well-structured and juicy, with dark cherry and plum tart flavors that feature firm tannins and acidity. The spicy finish offers baker’s chocolate notes and peppery hints. Drink now through 2024. 13,500 cases made, 3,500 cases imported.
WS9090 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 10/21
This is a selection of individual blocks from the Catena vineyards in Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley. Each block ferments separately on indigenous yeasts, with lees stirring to stabilize it and reduce the addition of sulfur. Eighteen months of oak aging leaves an impression that dampens the finish, but the beginning is spring-like and vivacious, like a meadow in bloom. It’s got the firmness to match up with summer sausage and hard cheeses on a picnic.

Nicolas Catena Zapata 2016 / 750 ml.

2016 / 750 ml.

Item #: 93742

RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2019
The 2016 Nicolás Catena Zapata has not been released, and they are going to sell the 2017 before it. This is the one wine, together with the Adrianna Vineyard Mundus Bacillus Terrae Malbec, that is sold through the négoce in Bordeaux for Europe and Asia. This is backward, serious and austere, with terrific balance and great length. This is a blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon from Gualtallary and 31% Malbec from Nicasia. There is also some 8% Cabernet Franc that seems to add a touch, and in 2016, it didn’t need irrigation because there was enough rain. This seems to follow the style of the 2013, a little tight, perhaps because of the Cabernets. This is nuanced and complex, with very good integration of the varieties and the oak, fruit, acidity and mineral texture. One of the best vintages for this bottling. 74,400 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2017.
JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, March 27, 2019
This a rich and flavorful red, showing blackcurrants and tobacco. Full-bodied, soft and fruity with bright and spicy, oyster-shell and fresh-herb character. Serious cabernet blend. Drink or hold.
