Cedar-soaked cherry, mushroom and peppercorn aromas show on the nose of this bottling. The palate is very savory, with dried meat and mushroom flavors. Slightly sour fruit and smoky leather elements arise on the finish. (Matt Kettmann)

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Aromas of blackberries, conifer, walnuts and dried flowers follow through to a full body with firm, silky tannins and a beautiful finish. It’s linear and fine. Juicy. A new addition of Alexander Valley and Blue Mountain give this some beauty. Drink or hold.
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma Valley) is absolutely gorgeous. Nearly half of the fruit is Paul Hobbs’s new estate vineyard in Alexander Valley plus Rancho Salina on Moon Mountain. Elegant, polished and refined, the 2018 is a very beautiful wine. Sweet red cherry, crushed flowers, spice and mint add lovely shades of aromatic nuance. The Sonoma Valley Cabernet is a hidden gem in Paul Hobbs’ range.
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 26th Feb 2021
Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County leaps from the glass with notes of Morello cherries, black raspberries, redcurrant jelly and fresh blackberries plus hints of bay leaves, fallen leaves and damp soil. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers crunchy red and black fruits with a lively backbone and approachable, grainy texture, finishing with a compelling herbal lift. The vintage was sourced 50% from Sonoma’s Moon Mountain AVA and 50% from a Paul Hobbs estate vineyard in Alexander Valley. 8,836 cases were made.

JS9797 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, February 3, 2022
Subtle and complex red with blackberry, black truffle, sweet tobacco and mahogany. Highlights of lavender and violets. Full-bodied and very tight with finesse and tension. Very polished, fine tannins. Long finish. Delicious already, but best after 2022. (James Suckling)
JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/27/2021
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Rubicon is based on a blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It’s a more backward, closed wine, offering classy notes of crème de cassis, lead pencil shavings, freshly crushed stone, and cedar. More medium to full-bodied and elegant, I’d like to see a touch more density and richness on the mid-palate, but it’s beautifully balanced, has gorgeous tannins, integrated acidity, and outstanding length on the finish. Give this classic, impressive, old school beauty 4–5 years in the cellar and enjoy over the following 15–20. (Jeb Dunnuck)
WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2022
This vintage has 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Refined and elegantly structured, it offers notes of currant, cedar and espresso, the tannins thick and firm. The savory concentration has an Old World charm and restraint with well-integrated oak. Enjoy best from 2028–2038. (Virginie Boone)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2021
Alluring aromatically, with restrained yet complex notes of mulberry, loganberry and anise giving way to an equally understated core of the same, picking up light sassafras, black tea and incense hints. The refined structure lets this drape nicely on the finish, with a mineral hint chiming in. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2035. 8,600 cases made. The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is absolutely impeccable. Best of all, it won’t require years in the cellar to be enjoyable. In fact, it is quite expressive today. Juicy dark cherry, plum, mocha, spice, leather and cinnamon are some of the many notes that flesh out in the glass. Silky and supple, with no hard edges, Ric Forman’s 2018 is a thing of beauty. The 2018 is a bit more open in the early going than Forman fans are likely to expect.

Collina Dalla Valle | Napa Valley Red Wine 2018 / 750 ml.

Napa Valley Red Wine
2018 / 750 ml.

Item #: 95196

JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/27/2021
Always a red blend, the 2018 Collina is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc, and the balance Petit Verdot. This cuvée is always made in a more up-front, fresh, drinkable style compared to the Cabernet Sauvignon and Maya. Rich, mouth-coating currant, dark chocolate, dried herb, and graphite notes all emerge from this beauty, which is full-bodied and has a ripe, sexy texture, great tannins, and just an undeniably delicious style. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021
The 2018 Collina Dalla Valle is a flat out gorgeous wine. Racy and sumptuous to the core, the 2018 captures all of the natural radiance of this eastern sector of Oakville. Soft contours and silky tannins make the 2018 an absolute delight to taste today. Readers will have a very hard time finding a Napa Valley wine that delivers this much sheer pleasure for the money.
RP90+90+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jan 2021
Dalla Valle’s 2018 Collina features a deep garnet-purple color, sashaying out of the glass with flamboyant scents of freshly crushed black currants, Morello cherries and red currant jelly with hints of cinnamon stick, menthol and red roses. The full-bodied palate is packed with black and red berry layers with loads of spicy sparks and a soft, velvety texture, finishing with a minty lift.

This delivers a core of frankly ripe blackberry paste and plum sauce flavors, backed by an overtly toasty finish. Shows spine, but remains rather obvious in style. Drink now through 2022. 11,736 cases made.
