Cardinale | Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 / 750 ml.

Item#: 99025

JD98+98+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/27/2021
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is based on a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot that spent 22 months in 81% new French oak. It’s a wonderfully complete, borderline perfect wine that shows the class of this estate as well as the vintage, revealing a seamless, full-bodied style that carries lots of blackcurrant, graphite, lead pencil, and tobacco aromatics, a deep, layered mid-palate, ultra-fine tannins, and flawless balance. As with most of Chris’s 2018s, it’s a wine that builds slowly with time in the glass, offering a layered, singular character. It’s a gorgeous 2018 that can be drunk today with ample pleasure, but it will ideally be given 4–6 years of bottle age, at which point it should evolve gracefully for 30–40 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Fantastic vintage, fantastic winemaking and the addition of 10% Merlot make for a magical experience of structure and graceful complexity in this always impressive, collectible wine. Saline, dried herb, cedar, pencil and crushed rock provide a landscape of savory earthiness, while a hint of rich red fruit remains subtle and youthful in grippy intensity. Enjoy best from 2028–2038. Composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot, the 2018 Cardinale was aged in French oak barrels for 22 months, 81% new. Deep garnet-purple colored, it prances out of the glass with gregarious notions of warm cassis, black cherries and wild blueberries, followed by emerging earth scents with a tobacco and garrigue undercurrent. Medium to full-bodied, gracefully styled and refreshing, the vibrant black and blue-fruited palate offers a wonderfully fine-grained texture and bags of energy, finishing long with a skip in its step. 5,107 cases were made. The 2018 Cardinale Cabernet Sauvignon is rich and sumptuous right out of the gate. Soaring aromatics and silky tannins add finesse to the dark mountain fruit. It’s hard to remember a vintage with this much sheer appeal in the early going. As always, Cardinale is a blend of choice hillside blocks. In 2018, the core is built around Stags Leap, Atlas Peak and St. Helena. Winemaker Chris Carpenter has backed off some of the overtness of the past years, and that is a huge benefit in allowing the wine to be more natural, more relaxed. The 2018 spent 21 months in 80–90% new oak, and clearly has the stuffing to handle the oak. It is one of the most refined Cardinales I can remember tasting. (Antonio Galloni)

Aromas of blackberries, plums and spice with some pine needles and fresh mushrooms. Full-bodied with very fine, round tannins and a juicy sophistication and flavorful profile. Dark and thought-provoking. So approachable. 90% cabernet sauvignon and 10% merlot. Drink or hold.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2021
Ripe and dense, but sleek and polished, with red and black licorice notes framing the core of lush plum sauce, blackberry compote and boysenberry reduction flavors. A licorice edge struts on the finish too. A showy style that should have lots of fans. Drink now through 2036. 5,000 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Where It's From

District / Napa Valley

View more wines from Napa Valley

Napa Valley is California's -- and America's -- most famous and celebrated wine district. Located north of San Francisco, Napa Valley is most famous for its world-class Cabernets and Chardonnays. The region's acclaim officially took off following a 1976 tasting in Paris when renowned judges chose a Napa Chardonnay and Cabernet over top French wines made from the same grapes.

Most wineries in the region produce either a Chardonnay or a Cabernet, and usually it's both. Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel are also grown with success in Napa Valley. You'll likely recognize the names of some of the viticultural areas within Napa Valley, including St. Helena, Stag's Leap and Carneros.

Region / California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Zinfandel, the 2018 Red Blend Tre Leoni has a rich, impressive bouquet of ripe black fruits, scorched earth, graphite, and vanilla, with plenty of classy oak making an appearance. This carries to a rich, full-bodied red that offers a mouth-filling texture, chewy tannins, and a great finish. This character-filled 2018 has lots to love, although I wouldn’t push the aging curve too much. (Jeb Dunnuck)

A strong showing of black cherry and licorice lead the way to a soft, supple midpalate in this wine that’s aged in French oak, half new and half once-used. Secondary notes of nutmeg, clove and coffee permeate through the structure and weight of the palate. Enjoy from 2028–2038.
JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, February 2, 2021
High-toned with lots of ripe, rich plums and hints of dates and chocolate. It’s full-bodied and layered with gorgeous fruit and a long, flavorful finish. A little tight now, but will improve by 2023.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2020
Juicy, with plum and blackberry notes that meld nicely with hints of sassafras and bay. Lightly brambly along the edges, with a nice tug of earth through the middle, leaving a loamy echo amidst the fruit and savory notes on the finish. Best from 2021 through 2031. 4,032 cases made.
RP92+92+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2020
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon John C. Sullenger Vineyard is produced from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and was aged for 18 months in French oak, 50% new. It has a medium to deep garnet-purple color, delivering vivacious scents of black raspberries, mulberries and warm red and black currants plus hints of spice cake, bouquet garni and unsmoked cigars. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers juicy black fruits with a spicy undercurrent and soft tannins, finishing on a lingering cinnamon stick note.
WS9292 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2020
This comes from the estate vineyard surrounding the Nickel & Nickel winery, on the east side of Highway 29. It has the density and richness of classic Oakville cabernet, with lush black-cherry flavors, lightly amaro-like bitterness and dark-chocolate tannins lending an umami bridge to beef stroganoff.

Pure, classic California notes of crème de cassis, spicy oak, chalky minerality, graphite, and spring flowers emerge from the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon, a blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Merlot that’s sourced from multiple mountain AVAs in the valley. Full-bodied and powerful on the palate, it has a deep, rich mid-palate, beautiful tannins, notable acidity, and a great, great finish. It’s another brilliant wine from Carpenter that can offer pleasure today yet also evolve for 20–25 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JS9898 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, December 18, 2022
So much crushed lead pencil, tile and dried flowers, together with blackberries and brambleberries. Full-bodied with round, polished tannins. Layered and so delicious. Black olives and graphite at the end. This potpourri of Napa cabernet character takes your palate on a tour of so many of the regions, including all the mountains, such as Howell, Veeder and Spring Mountain, as well as Atlas Peak, Stags Leap, Yountville and St. Helena. Precision and polish to the wine. Drinkable now, but better to hold.
RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022
The 2019 Cardinale is a blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Merlot, with the Merlot from a particular block on Howell Mountain. Overall, it’s about 80% mountain fruit and 20% valley-floor fruit, according to winemaker Chris Carpenter. Cherries and cassis dominate the nose, while the full-bodied palate is rich and velvety, with a long, mouthwatering finish that adds barrel-derived notes of vanilla, powdered sugar and cedar. (Joe Czerwinski)
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2022
An inviting, fruit-driven style, with a gorgeous display of plum puree and blackberry confiture pumping along, flanked with licorice and apple wood and kept honest with a loamy accent through the finish. Polished in feel overall, but that belies the serious grip. Drink now through 2036. 5,100 cases made. (James Molesworth)
