A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc and 5% Merlot, the deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Proprietary Red EE Tench Vineyard is scented of pure plums and ripe blueberries with redcurrants and touches of lavender, roses, bay leaves and dusty earth. The palate is medium to full-bodied, firm, fine-grained, vibrant and refreshing, finishing long and perfumed. 1,403 cases produced.
Lifted aromatics give the 2016 Red Wine EE Tench Vineyard a dimension of breadth and expansiveness that is alluring. The red cherry, plum, mocha and spice flavors are racy in this dense, explosive wine. The EE is shaping up to be another gem from Russell Bevan.
Offers a lavish feel, with waves of crushed plum, blackberry and açaí berry flavors rolling forth, infused liberally with dark licorice, sweet toast and fruitcake notes. A late tug of dark earth keeps this just honest enough. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2020 through 2032. 1,403 cases made.

Napa Valley is California's -- and America's -- most famous and celebrated wine district. Located north of San Francisco, Napa Valley is most famous for its world-class Cabernets and Chardonnays. The region's acclaim officially took off following a 1976 tasting in Paris when renowned judges chose a Napa Chardonnay and Cabernet over top French wines made from the same grapes.
Most wineries in the region produce either a Chardonnay or a Cabernet, and usually it's both. Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel are also grown with success in Napa Valley. You'll likely recognize the names of some of the viticultural areas within Napa Valley, including St. Helena, Stag's Leap and Carneros.

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
2016 / 750 ml.
Item #: 91761
The deep purple-black colored 2016 Nomad Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane is a little youthfully subdued to begin, opening out to reveal tantalizing glimpses of baked redcurrants, cassis, chocolate-covered cherries and mulberries with nuances of crushed rocks, tilled black soil and violets. Full-bodied and sporting layers of tightly wound black fruits and earth-inspired flavors, it has a firm, fine-grained frame and a very long, multifaceted finish. A stunning expression of Dr. Crane!
This is a tart, tangy and tense red from the legendary vineyard, soft and velvety lush on the midpalate. Caramelized oak cradles baked cherry and cranberry, the layers complex and lengthy with seasonings of clove and nutmeg. Enjoy 2021–2030.
A flicker of savory adds lift and energy to the waves of warmed plum, cassis and cherry preserves that glide through. The structure is polished, the finish long, with an anise note checking in at the end. Drink now through 2030. 190 cases made.

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon has a deep garnet-purple color. Its nose begins a little reserved, slowly revealing a quiet intensity of freshly crushed blackberries, chocolate-covered cherries, cassis and aniseed with compelling nuances of black tea, cigar box, truffles and charcuterie, plus, with coaxing, gentle wafts of red roses and crushed rocks emerge. The medium to full-bodied palate is simply arresting, offering a a myriad floral and earth sparks amidst a black fruit core and with seamless, firm, very fine-grained tannins. Well-knit freshness brings forth layer after layer of delicate nuances on the very long, mineral-laced finish. The team at Eisele, led by Frédéric Engerer (of Chateau Latour) and beautifully orchestrated by winemaker Hélène Mingot, have knocked it out of the park this vintage with this singular expression that both embraces the site’s heritage and reveals parts unknown.
The aromas are so complex here with blackberries, blackcurrants, raspberries and orange peel. Juicy and deep with a polished and lush texture. Full-bodied yet supple and harmonious. Poised and extremely long. You really want to drink this now, but be patient. Try after 2024.
The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon from Eisele Vineyard is simply monumental. Powerful and persistent, the 2016 marries intensity with finesse in the way only a wine from a world-class site can. Everything is just in the right place. Time in the glass brings out stunning richness in every dimension and truly exceptional pedigree. Dramatic and statuesque in its beauty, the 2016 is a towering Cabernet Sauvignon that shows why Eisele Vineyard is one of the world’s great vineyard sites. In a word: epic.
Ripe, broad and fleshy, this lets beautiful plum sauce and blackberry compote notes drape effortlessly over a tobacco- and loam-accented spine. The loamy edge drives through the finish with authority, while the fruit keeps cascading over it, ending very long and very deep. This has a beguiling aspect despite the enormous scale, but it should benefit from cellaring. A wine of the earth, through and through. Best from 2021 through 2035. 1,825 cases made.

Marked by scents of bay leaf, sage, cherries and cassis, the full-bodied 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Trailside Vineyard is dense but with a classic linear Cabernet structure. Quite sculpted and fresh for valley-floor fruit, it’s focused and long on the finish, gently dusty but firm. Once a walnut grove, the vineyard extends from the Silverado Trail down toward the Napa River, with this bottling using fruit from both the rocky, lower bench section of the vineyard near the road and a sandier parcel closer to the river. (Joe Czerwinski)
Fresh, with racy red currant, Damson and red cherry fruit flavors running through. Flecked with light savory notes and hints of sassafras, with an iron note lacing the piercing finish. Latent grip too, so cellar for maximum effect. Drink now through 2035. 2,500 cases made. (James Molesworth)

A blend put together by Bevan from the single vineyards, the Ontogeny cuvée is year-in, year-out one of the greatest values in Cabernet Sauvignon. His 2019 Ontogeny is no exception, revealing a dense purple hue as well as rock star notes of crème de cassis, violets, tobacco leaf, and chocolate. It’s a big, classic Bevan wine and has remarkable purity, silky, polished tannins, and not a hard edge to be found. Don’t miss it! (Jeb Dunnuck)
The bargain in the Bevan lineup is the 2019 Ontogeny Red Wine, which is a Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend that includes small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Featuring lovely notes of ripe cherries, celery seed, cinnamon and cedar, it’s complex and full-bodied, with an attractive silky-velvety texture and a long, red-fruited finish. Approachable now, it should still be drinking well for close to two decades. (Joe Czerwinski)
The 2019 Ontogeny is another tremendous wine in this range. In fact, the 2019 is one of the very best Ontogenys I can remember tasting. Rich, sumptuous and unapologetically brash, the 2019 is a total rock-star. A touch of Malbec adds exuberance to the fruit, as if these wines needed any more richness. For readers who want to know what the fuss is about Bevan, Ontogeny is the place to start! (Antonio Galloni)

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Tench Vineyard is very deep purple-black in color with an earthy, meaty, broody nose with notes of mocha over baked plums and crème de cassis plus wafts of spice box and mincemeat. The palate is full-bodied, concentrated, rich and earthy with great vibrancy on the finish. 839 cases produced.
Creamy, ample and voluptuous, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Tench Vineyard captures all the natural intensity that is typical of this site. There is a resonance to the 2016 Tench that is impossible to miss. Moreover, the Tench is one of so many wines that show just how seductive the 2016s are.
Offers a solid core of dark plum and blackberry fruit, with a sense of freshness throughout, while licorice, bramble and violet notes add energy and lift. Shows ample grip and toast, but the brightness of the fruit takes center stage. Best from 2020 through 2032. 390 cases made.

Item #: 90792
Very deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Vixen Block Wildfoote Vineyard offers up a very serious nose of cassis, blackberry pie and blueberry compote with hints of dried lavender, underbrush, Chinese five spice and cigar box, plus a waft of dark chocolate. Full-bodied and densely packed with black fruit preserves and earthy layers, it has a firm frame of finely grained tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with epically long exotic spice nuances. Only 125 cases were produced.
The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Wildfoote Vixen Block is super-refined, silky and expressive. Inky blue and purplish fruit, lavender, spice, licorice and mint are all woven together in this attractive, mid-weight wine. The 2015 is floral and lifted, with tons of Stags Leap character. I never thought I would use the word ‘restrained’ to describe a Russell Bevan wine, that is exactly what this is.

The 2021 EE Red Wine is ripe and powerful, with smoky red and black fruits as well as lots of background oak, graphite, espresso, and dark chocolate-like aromas and flavors that develop beautifully with time in the glass. Deep, rich, full-bodied, and concentrated on the palate, it has plenty of background oak, the building tannins of the vintage, and a great finish. A gorgeous wine, it will benefit from 3-4 years in the cellar and evolve for 25-30 years in cold cellars. The blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Cabernet Franc brought up in new barrels. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Cabernet Franc from the redder iron soils in the center of the vineyard, the 2017 Tench Vineyard EE Red Wine is another incredible wine in this lineup. Deep purple/black-colored, with mineral-drenched notes of blackcurrants, ground herbs, earth, graphite, and crushed rocks, it has an “iron fist in a velvet glove” style on the palate, loads of tannins, good acidity, and a big finish. (Jeb Dunnuck)
Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Proprietary Red EE Tench Vineyard (a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot) strolls out of the glass with nonchalant savory notes of beef drippings, sautéed herbs, pencil lead and tapenade with a core of warm cassis, black cherry compote and redcurrant jelly. The terrific 2021 Proprietary Red Sugarloaf Mountain is a 60-40 blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot from this vineyard in southern Napa. Vaguely floral and leafy, loaded with purple raspberries and cherries, this is really complex, with lovely fruit. Full-bodied, supple, silky and seamless, it finishes long and elegant. (Joe Czerwinski)
Gorgeous blue fruits, mountain scrub brush, sage, espresso, black raspberry, and violet notes all emerge from the 2021 Proprietary Red Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard, a blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot that’s full-bodied and has terrific overall balance, building, fine-grained tannins, and a good spine of acidity that carries through the finish. From Rutherford comes the 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon McGah Vineyard. It is a small cuvée of 125 cases. Dense purple to the rim with notes of blackberry, cassis, white flowers, cedar wood and smoky barbecue, the wine is full-bodied, opulent, fleshy and showing extremely well already. This wine will continue to offer considerable pleasure for another 15 or more years.
The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon McGah Vineyard is a dark, powerful and virile wine. Black cherry, plum, mocha, chocolate, licorice, spice and new leather infuse the creamy, voluptuous finish. This is another racy, intense wine that will drink well with minimal cellaring. The McGah is not the most complex wine in the range, but it is one of the most immediate and delicious. I especially like the depth and gravitas here. This is an overachieving wine from a site on the southern end of Rutherford that has only rarely produced wines of this level. In a word: terrific.

From one of the top sites in the valley and all Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Tench Vineyard isn’t far off the Calixtro cuvée, yet it’s more forward and opulent, with savory red and black fruits, notes of iron, dusty earth, leather, and baking spice, full-bodied richness and depth, and ripe yet building, substantial tannins. It offers some up-front charm today, but it’s going to reward 3–4 years of bottle age and should evolve for 25–30 years. This is another serious, age-worthy, incredible wine from Bevan that readers will absolutely love. (Jeb Dunnuck)
