A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc and 5% Merlot, the deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Proprietary Red EE Tench Vineyard is scented of pure plums and ripe blueberries with redcurrants and touches of lavender, roses, bay leaves and dusty earth. The palate is medium to full-bodied, firm, fine-grained, vibrant and refreshing, finishing long and perfumed. 1,403 cases produced.
VN94+94–97 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2018
Lifted aromatics give the 2016 Red Wine EE Tench Vineyard a dimension of breadth and expansiveness that is alluring. The red cherry, plum, mocha and spice flavors are racy in this dense, explosive wine. The EE is shaping up to be another gem from Russell Bevan.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2019
Offers a lavish feel, with waves of crushed plum, blackberry and açaí berry flavors rolling forth, infused liberally with dark licorice, sweet toast and fruitcake notes. A late tug of dark earth keeps this just honest enough. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2020 through 2032. 1,403 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Where It's From

District / Napa Valley

View more wines from Napa Valley

Napa Valley is California's -- and America's -- most famous and celebrated wine district. Located north of San Francisco, Napa Valley is most famous for its world-class Cabernets and Chardonnays. The region's acclaim officially took off following a 1976 tasting in Paris when renowned judges chose a Napa Chardonnay and Cabernet over top French wines made from the same grapes.

Most wineries in the region produce either a Chardonnay or a Cabernet, and usually it's both. Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel are also grown with success in Napa Valley. You'll likely recognize the names of some of the viticultural areas within Napa Valley, including St. Helena, Stag's Leap and Carneros.

Region / California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
2016 / 1.5 L.

Item #: 95202

RP9999 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2018
Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Darius II sparks both hedonistic and cerebral appreciation by exuding profound scents of preserved plums, blackberry compote, blueberry pie, kirsch and warm cassis with suggestions of candied violets, cigar box, Indian spices, fragrant earth, truffles and licorice. Full-bodied, bold and decadently fruited in the mouth, the palate delivers rich black fruit and spicy layers with a firm yet velvety frame and an epically long, earth-laced finish.
JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, November 19, 2018
Big and rich Napa red with layers of soft, lavish tannins and ripe fruit with a dried-berry and cedar undertone. Full body. Flavorful finish. Drink or hold.

Bond Melbury 2016 / 750 ml.

2016 / 750 ml.

Item #: 92549

VN9898 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020
The 2016 Melbury is powerful and yet medium in body, with layers of exotic spice, dark red cherry, blood orange, leather, licorice and star anise that give it an exotic character I don’t remember seeing in the past. Despite its mid-weight profile, the Melbury has plenty of supporting structure. Over the last year, the Melbury has gained a bit of weight, but remains quite focused. Sometimes the Melbury suffers by being the first vineyard-designate poured at Bond. Its remarkable allure is evident nonetheless. This is an impressive showing.
RP97+97+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Sep 2019
Overlooking Lake Hennessy up on Pritchard Hill, Melbury vineyard has produced a beautifully elegant and vivacious signature in 2016, which clearly reveals the personality that this incredible site tends to want to give. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Melbury comes bounding out of the glass with expressive black and red currants notes followed by wild blueberries, warm plums, pencil shavings and wild sage plus wafts of lavender and crushed rocks. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is practically electric with energetic fruit, framed by firm, grainy tannins and invigorating freshness, finishing long and minerally.
SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jul 16, 2020
Featuring currant and fig notes, this offers a juicy, slightly rounded feel, revealing melted licorice, sweet tobacco and warm gravel accents along the way. Shows most of its muscle on the finish and shuts down a bit in the glass, indicating that cellaring is required. Best from 2022 through 2040. 370 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Colgin Cariad | Napa Valley Red Wine 2016 / 750 ml.

Napa Valley Red Wine
2016 / 750 ml.

Item #: 92376

VN100100 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2018
The highlight in this range today, the 2016 Cariad is utterly magnificent. Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot give the wine soaring aromatic intensity and striking savoriness to play off the racy, forward fruit. Time in barrel has done wonders to meld all the elements together. Today, the Cariad is dense, explosive and super-expressive. And yet my sense is that the 2016 still has quite a bit of room to grow. Even at this early stage, the 2016 is a total stunner. The symbiosis of David Abreu fruit and Allision Tauziet’s winemaking makes for an electric, unforgettable 2016. Don’t miss it.
SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2019
Rich and very suave in style, with a gorgeous core of pure plum, blackberry and cassis notes sailing through the long finish, which is supported by a well-buried graphite edge that allows the creamy feel to gain the upper hand while keeping everything grounded. A beautiful display of restrained power. Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. To be released March 2020. Best from 2021 through 2035. 750 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Dominus 2016 / 1.5 L.

2016 / 1.5 L.

Item #: 90597

RP100100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2018
A blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot and 8% Cabernet Franc aged in 40% new oak, the 2016 Proprietary Red Wine is deep purple-black in color and quite reticent at this youthful stage to begin, offering up subtle notions of potpourri, Indian spices, cigar box and iron ore over a core of crushed blackberries and black cherries with intermittent wafts of black and red currants, new leather and smoked meats. The palate is medium to full-bodied with a densely packed mid-palate and oodles of freshness framed by very ripe, finely grained tannins and laced with compelling earthy accents. It offers incredible vibrancy with tons of black and red fruit sparkle in the mid-palate leading to a provocative mineral element on the very long finish. If I could give more than 100 for this one, I would. To be released in May 2019.
JS9898 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, December 17, 2018
The opulence of fresh flowers and dark fruit is so impressive. There’s so much going on, from flowers to currants. The palate is full and powerful, but what impresses most are the ripe tannins and the amazing poise at the finish. Tightens down at the end. A blend of 84 per cent cabernet sauvignon, eight per cent petit verdot and eight per cent cabernet franc. Drink in 2021.
VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2018
The 2016 Dominus is a dark, somber wine. I don’t quite see the explosive energy of the 2013 or 2010, not the seductiveness of the 2012, but the 2016 has a distinct charm that is all its own. Quite frankly, I can’t remember a young Dominus with this combination of fruit density, freshness and polished tannins. A huge center of fruit emerge with time in the glass in a big, large-scaled Dominus that should provide readers with a long drinking window of pure pleasure once some of the baby fat wears off.
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2019
This marries a range of old-school savory, tobacco, chestnut and bay leaf notes with a dense and muscular core of dark currant and blackberry fruit, all backed by a loam-swaddled finish. Long and dense, but defined, with the fruit steadily emerging to win out in the end. Patience is required. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2023 through 2040. 5,500 cases made. (James Molesworth)

RP93+93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022
Marked by scents of bay leaf, sage, cherries and cassis, the full-bodied 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Trailside Vineyard is dense but with a classic linear Cabernet structure. Quite sculpted and fresh for valley-floor fruit, it’s focused and long on the finish, gently dusty but firm. Once a walnut grove, the vineyard extends from the Silverado Trail down toward the Napa River, with this bottling using fruit from both the rocky, lower bench section of the vineyard near the road and a sandier parcel closer to the river. (Joe Czerwinski)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2021
Fresh, with racy red currant, Damson and red cherry fruit flavors running through. Flecked with light savory notes and hints of sassafras, with an iron note lacing the piercing finish. Latent grip too, so cellar for maximum effect. Drink now through 2035. 2,500 cases made. (James Molesworth)

From Rutherford comes the 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon McGah Vineyard. It is a small cuvée of 125 cases. Dense purple to the rim with notes of blackberry, cassis, white flowers, cedar wood and smoky barbecue, the wine is full-bodied, opulent, fleshy and showing extremely well already. This wine will continue to offer considerable pleasure for another 15 or more years.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2016
The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon McGah Vineyard is a dark, powerful and virile wine. Black cherry, plum, mocha, chocolate, licorice, spice and new leather infuse the creamy, voluptuous finish. This is another racy, intense wine that will drink well with minimal cellaring. The McGah is not the most complex wine in the range, but it is one of the most immediate and delicious. I especially like the depth and gravitas here. This is an overachieving wine from a site on the southern end of Rutherford that has only rarely produced wines of this level. In a word: terrific.

A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Cabernet Franc from the redder iron soils in the center of the vineyard, the 2017 Tench Vineyard EE Red Wine is another incredible wine in this lineup. Deep purple/black-colored, with mineral-drenched notes of blackcurrants, ground herbs, earth, graphite, and crushed rocks, it has an “iron fist in a velvet glove” style on the palate, loads of tannins, good acidity, and a big finish. Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Proprietary Red EE Tench Vineyard (a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot) strolls out of the glass with nonchalant savory notes of beef drippings, sautéed herbs, pencil lead and tapenade with a core of warm cassis, black cherry compote and redcurrant jelly. RP96+96–100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Oct 2016
The 2015 Sugarloaf Mountain Proprietary Red that began as an equal-part blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot seems to be an equal follow-up to the perfect 2014. Incredible aromatics of spring flowers and blue and black fruits are followed by a long, deep, skyscraper-like wine with explosive fruit intensity, loads of glycerin and a wonderfully, fleshy, succulent mouthfeel, which is certainly a characteristic of the top 2015s. This should drink nicely for 15–20 years.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2018
The 2015 Proprietary Red Wine Sugarloaf Mountain is laced with the essence of ripe red cherry, plum, sage, wild flowers and savory herbs are all beautifully delineated. Voluptuous and racy to the core, the 2015 is a classic Russell Bevan wine built on layers of flavor and textural intensity.

From a parcel along Silverado Trail that Bevan describes as “super rocky,” the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Tench Vineyard offers up a hugely complex, fruit-driven bouquet that blends purple raspberries, black cherries, red raspberries and cassis. It’s full-bodied and richly concentrated, with a long, velvety finish. (Joe Czerwinski)
JD9898 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 6/6/2023
From one of the top sites in the valley and all Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Tench Vineyard isn’t far off the Calixtro cuvée, yet it’s more forward and opulent, with savory red and black fruits, notes of iron, dusty earth, leather, and baking spice, full-bodied richness and depth, and ripe yet building, substantial tannins. It offers some up-front charm today, but it’s going to reward 3–4 years of bottle age and should evolve for 25–30 years. This is another serious, age-worthy, incredible wine from Bevan that readers will absolutely love. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Tench Vineyard is an exotic wine. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, sweet spice, new leather, licorice and chocolate are all dialed up in this opulent, dense Cabernet. Sugarloaf is a cooler site in south Napa, above a quarry. It usually allows for a longer hang time, often lending a minty or herbal lift to this label. The deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Proprietary Red Sugarloaf Mountain is composed of 55% Cabernet Franc, 40% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. It races out of the glass with gregarious notions of red and black currant preserves, beef drippings and wild sage, plus hints of chocolate box, pencil shavings and raspberry leaves. The blockbuster, full-bodied palate is densely laden with black and red berry layers, framed by firm, grainy tannins and compelling freshness, finishing with an herbal lift on the finish. 650 cases were produced. A blend put together by Bevan from the single vineyards, the Ontogeny cuvée is year-in, year-out one of the greatest values in Cabernet Sauvignon. His 2019 Ontogeny is no exception, revealing a dense purple hue as well as rock star notes of crème de cassis, violets, tobacco leaf, and chocolate. It’s a big, classic Bevan wine and has remarkable purity, silky, polished tannins, and not a hard edge to be found. Don’t miss it! (Jeb Dunnuck)

The bargain in the Bevan lineup is the 2019 Ontogeny Red Wine, which is a Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend that includes small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Featuring lovely notes of ripe cherries, celery seed, cinnamon and cedar, it’s complex and full-bodied, with an attractive silky-velvety texture and a long, red-fruited finish. Approachable now, it should still be drinking well for close to two decades. (Joe Czerwinski)

The 2019 Ontogeny is another tremendous wine in this range. In fact, the 2019 is one of the very best Ontogenys I can remember tasting. The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Tench Vineyard is a stunning example of eastern Oakville Cabernet. It’s loaded with scents of cassis and red plum and tinged with faint hints of thyme and sage, and it’s full-bodied, rich and relatively open-knit. The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Tench Vineyard is packed with inky dark fruit, gravel, smoke, licorice, lavender, chocolate incense and spice. This powerful, virile Cabernet needs a few years to unwind, but it is super-impressive, even in the early going. A whole range of bold, savory accents lend character to the searingly intense finish.
