The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Tench Vineyard is very deep purple-black in color with an earthy, meaty, broody nose with notes of mocha over baked plums and crème de cassis plus wafts of spice box and mincemeat. The palate is full-bodied, concentrated, rich and earthy with great vibrancy on the finish. 839 cases produced.
Creamy, ample and voluptuous, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Tench Vineyard captures all the natural intensity that is typical of this site. There is a resonance to the 2016 Tench that is impossible to miss. Moreover, the Tench is one of so many wines that show just how seductive the 2016s are.
Offers a solid core of dark plum and blackberry fruit, with a sense of freshness throughout, while licorice, bramble and violet notes add energy and lift. Shows ample grip and toast, but the brightness of the fruit takes center stage. Best from 2020 through 2032. 390 cases made.

A blend of Bordeaux varieties, the 2016 M by Marciano displays a medium to deep garnet-purple color. It is a little youthfully subdued to begin, opening with delicate notions of fresh mulberries, black cherries and warm blackcurrants with hints of raspberry leaves, forest floor, violets and black tea plus touches of cedar chest and charcoal. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has fantastic energy, with layers of black fruits and earthy sparks supported by lovely freshness and a solid grainy texture, finishing long with an herbal lift.
Juicy, with dark currant and blackberry fruit showing good energy, while light charcoal, tobacco and roasted cedar notes fill in through the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2020 through 2026. 385 cases made.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Proprietary Red Blend Family Reserve Generations is intensely scented of warm black and red currants, Black Forest cake and blueberry compote with nuances of chocolate mint, new leather, tilled soil and fallen leaves. Full-bodied with a taut frame of grainy tannins supporting the densely packed black fruit layers, it has a long lingering minty kick on the finish.
Features a solid range blackberry paste, fig and plum notes, with cassis bush, bittersweet cocoa and licorice root accents. The solidly grippy finish leaves a hefty impression, but this will have fans. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2021 through 2029. 2,400 cases made.

Aromas of blackberries, black truffles, burnt orange peel, forest floor and blueberries. Decadent. Full to medium body. The tannins are so tight and dense with super fine and caressing texture. An amazing, mesmerizing wine. Drinkable and glorious, but better after 2022.
The 2016 IX Proprietary Red Estate is a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple, it comes strutting out of the glass with flamboyant Black Forest cake, blueberry compote and plum pudding notions plus hints of spice cake, unsmoked cigars, menthol, licorice and dusty soil and accented by wafts of tar and black tea. The palate is full-bodied yet incredibly poised and vibrant with amazing freshness and very fine-grained, very firm tannins. It possesses the most provocative earthy sparks, providing arresting depth to the very long, beautifully perfumed finish. Stunning.
The 2016 IX Estate is a total knock-out. A wine of exceptional balance and harmony, the 2016 is stunning from the very first taste. Nothing really stands out. Instead, it is the wine’s sense of proportion that makes the most lasting impression. Seamless, layered and voluptuous to the core, the 2016 has so much to offer. Bright Pritchard Hill acids and minerality are felt on the persistent, beautifully sculpted finish.

From Rutherford comes the 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon McGah Vineyard. It is a small cuvée of 125 cases. Dense purple to the rim with notes of blackberry, cassis, white flowers, cedar wood and smoky barbecue, the wine is full-bodied, opulent, fleshy and showing extremely well already. This wine will continue to offer considerable pleasure for another 15 or more years.
The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon McGah Vineyard is a dark, powerful and virile wine. Black cherry, plum, mocha, chocolate, licorice, spice and new leather infuse the creamy, voluptuous finish. This is another racy, intense wine that will drink well with minimal cellaring. The McGah is not the most complex wine in the range, but it is one of the most immediate and delicious. I especially like the depth and gravitas here. This is an overachieving wine from a site on the southern end of Rutherford that has only rarely produced wines of this level. In a word: terrific.

A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Cabernet Franc from the redder iron soils in the center of the vineyard, the 2017 Tench Vineyard EE Red Wine is another incredible wine in this lineup. Deep purple/black-colored, with mineral-drenched notes of blackcurrants, ground herbs, earth, graphite, and crushed rocks, it has an “iron fist in a velvet glove” style on the palate, loads of tannins, good acidity, and a big finish. Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Proprietary Red EE Tench Vineyard (a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot) strolls out of the glass with nonchalant savory notes of beef drippings, sautéed herbs, pencil lead and tapenade with a core of warm cassis, black cherry compote and redcurrant jelly. Full-bodied, densely packed, serious and savory in the mouth, it has firm, chewy tannins and a lively, long finish. 1,451 cases were made.

The 2015 Sugarloaf Mountain Proprietary Red that began as an equal-part blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot seems to be an equal follow-up to the perfect 2014. Incredible aromatics of spring flowers and blue and black fruits are followed by a long, deep, skyscraper-like wine with explosive fruit intensity, loads of glycerin and a wonderfully, fleshy, succulent mouthfeel, which is certainly a characteristic of the top 2015s. This should drink nicely for 15–20 years.
The 2015 Proprietary Red Wine Sugarloaf Mountain is laced with the essence of ripe red cherry, plum, sage, wild flowers and savory herbs are all beautifully delineated. Voluptuous and racy to the core, the 2015 is a classic Russell Bevan wine built on layers of flavor and textural intensity.
Rich and generous, offering an array of dark-hued fruits. The ample structure bears merit, with fine-grained, dusty tannins. Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Best from 2021 through 2032. 500 cases made.

A blend put together by Bevan from the single vineyards, the Ontogeny cuvée is year-in, year-out one of the greatest values in Cabernet Sauvignon. His 2019 Ontogeny is no exception, revealing a dense purple hue as well as rock star notes of crème de cassis, violets, tobacco leaf, and chocolate. It’s a big, classic Bevan wine and has remarkable purity, silky, polished tannins, and not a hard edge to be found. Don’t miss it! (Jeb Dunnuck)
The bargain in the Bevan lineup is the 2019 Ontogeny Red Wine, which is a Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend that includes small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Featuring lovely notes of ripe cherries, celery seed, cinnamon and cedar, it’s complex and full-bodied, with an attractive silky-velvety texture and a long, red-fruited finish. The 2019 Ontogeny is another tremendous wine in this range. In fact, the 2019 is one of the very best Ontogenys I can remember tasting. Rich, sumptuous and unapologetically brash, the 2019 is a total rock-star. A touch of Malbec adds exuberance to the fruit, as if these wines needed any more richness. The palate offers loads of lift from the menthol and red fruits, with a fine-grained texture and tons of energy on the finish. 605 cases produced.
The 2016 Proprietary Red Wine Sugarloaf Mountain is fresh, nuanced and full of potential. The aromatics and fruit are beautifully delineated, while bright acidity gives the wine vibrancy and focus. The 2016 is shaping up to be a real jewel of a wine.

It’s loaded with scents of cassis and red plum and tinged with faint hints of thyme and sage, and it’s full-bodied, rich and relatively open-knit. The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Tench Vineyard is packed with inky dark fruit, gravel, smoke, licorice, lavender, chocolate incense and spice. This powerful, virile Cabernet needs a few years to unwind, but it is super-impressive, even in the early going. A whole range of bold, savory accents lend character to the searingly intense finish. Very deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Vixen Block Wildfoote Vineyard offers up a very serious nose of cassis, blackberry pie and blueberry compote with hints of dried lavender, underbrush, Chinese five spice and cigar box, plus a waft of dark chocolate. Full-bodied and densely packed with black fruit preserves and earthy layers, it has a firm frame of finely grained tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with epically long exotic spice nuances. Only 125 cases were produced.
The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Wildfoote Vixen Block is super-refined, silky and expressive. Inky blue and purplish fruit, lavender, spice, licorice and mint are all woven together in this attractive, mid-weight wine. The 2015 is floral and lifted, with tons of Stags Leap character. I never thought I would use the word ‘restrained’ to describe a Russell Bevan wine, that is exactly what this is.
