View more wines from Chile

With its stunning, snowy mountains and beautiful beaches, Chile would be captivating even if it wasn’t turning out some of the most interesting and accessible wines in the world. But large producers like Concha y Toro and Casa LaPostolle have put Chile on the wine map with their complex yet value-driven Merlots and Cabernets, and lately smaller regions like Maipo, Casablanca, and the Bio Bio Valley have become more widely available.

Now, Syrah, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc, and even that elusive beast of the wine world--affordable Pinot Noir—have joined the ranks of Chile’s most famous offerings. And don’t forget Chile’s signature grape, Carmenere--a peppery, purpley beast that goes wonderfully with grilled meat dishes. Best of all, Chile offers some of the best value in the world, with many outstanding wines selling for under $12.

A bright nose of black cherries, redcurrants, plums and hints of coffee and spices. Very crunchy and juicy on the palate with a medium body and refined tannins. Impressively balanced and drinkable. Drink or hold.

Such demure depth and focus on the nose, showing high-grade cedar wood with brooding yet fresh blackberries, cassis and cigar, as well as hints of dark olives and red chili pepper. Beautiful cabernet character here. This is a very structured and full-bodied red, imbedded with lots of vertical, fine-grained tannins now, which will take some time to soften. The volume on the palate is quite impressive. 81% cabernet sauvignon, 5% cabernet franc, 5% syrah, 5% petit verdot and 4% carmenere. Sustainable. Drink from 2026. (James Suckling)

Don Melchor Cabernet Sauvignon | Puente Alto Vineyard 2020 / 750 ml.

Puente Alto Vineyard
2020 / 750 ml.

Item #: 99734

JS9797 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, December 13, 2022
Deep and serious with black olives, blackberries, blueberries, tobacco leaf, sweet red capsicum, ash, dried meat and a hint of black chocolate. This is a more direct, full-bodied Don Melchor, filled with solid blackberries and wrapped by tight, fine-grained tannins. Long and deep. 92% cabernet sauvignon, 6% cabernet franc, 1% merlot and 1% petit verdot. Better after 2024.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2022
The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Don Melchor has a 6% dash of Cabernet Franc along with 1% splashes of Merlot and Petit Verdot from Puente Alto, Maipo, and was aged for 15 months in 71% new French barrels. Vivid garnet red in the glass. The aromatic profile features red fruit such as cherry and black currant along with hints of mint, spice and pepper over secondary aromas from the aging process, including a gentle whiff of cedar. Intense in the mouth, with juicy freshness and young tannins that will integrate better in time. The fruit was especially vivid this year, adding greatly to the nuance and subtle details. This will growth deeper in the bottle. (Joaquín Hidalgo)

Inviting aromas of chocolate-covered cherry, dried rose petal and petrichor set the stage for this well-structured red, which balances concentrated berry and mission fig flavors against vibrant acidity, lending a lush, mouthwatering quality to a finish that swirls with cassis, spices and fine tannins. Drink now through 2038. 14,600 cases made, 3,500 cases imported. (Aaron Romano)

Almaviva Epu 2020 / 750 ml.

2020 / 750 ml.

Item #: 99255

JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, December 13, 2022
Lots of finely roasted sweet spice and roasted sesame to the blackberries, cassis and iron, together with hints of blue fruit and cured meat. A medium-to full-bodied palate, filled with rather generous sweet berries. Fleshy, supple and savory with quite fine-grained tannins and a long finish. First year with 10% new wood. 81% cabernet sauvignon, 12% carmenere, 5% merlot and 2% cabernet franc. Already delicious, but can hold, too.
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2022
The current release of their second wine is the 2020 Epu. It’s selected from the same terroir and vineyard in Puente Alto, one of the most reputed places for Cabernet Sauvignon in Chile, but from the younger vines (five- to 20-year-old vines) and harvested a little earlier to preserve acidity and fruit. In the warm and dry 2020 vintage, the wine was produced with a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Carmenere, 5% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, usually higher in Cabernet and lower in Carmenere than Almaviva. It has red ripe berries, the textbook blackberries and cassis and some creamy oak. It’s ripe at 14.8% alcohol and has mellow acidity, good freshness and balance, with a pH of 3.71 and 4.8 grams of acidity (tartaric). It matured for 12 months in French barriques, 10% new and 90% second use. The wine has a bright nose with a clean note of baked “morrón” peppers intermixed with red berry compote. It has a velvety plate with the luxurious texture of the modern Bordeaux, with abundant, slightly dusty tannins. It’s approachable and round but should reward some time in bottle. This is a pretty serious Epu. 75,000 bottles produced. It was bottled at the end of 2021 and the first days of 2022. This is the second vintage sold through the Place de Bordeaux négociant system. Shows lovely floral blueberry and loam notes up front, while the fleshy core of concentrated blackberry and cassis grabs your attention and lingers nicely around saline and iron notes. Ends with firm, dusty tannins and hints of dark chocolate. Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2033. 3,500 cases made, 500 cases imported. (Aaron Romano)
