Where It's From

District / Napa Valley

View more wines from Napa Valley

Napa Valley is California's -- and America's -- most famous and celebrated wine district. Located north of San Francisco, Napa Valley is most famous for its world-class Cabernets and Chardonnays. The region's acclaim officially took off following a 1976 tasting in Paris when renowned judges chose a Napa Chardonnay and Cabernet over top French wines made from the same grapes.

Most wineries in the region produce either a Chardonnay or a Cabernet, and usually it's both. Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel are also grown with success in Napa Valley. You'll likely recognize the names of some of the viticultural areas within Napa Valley, including St. Helena, Stag's Leap and Carneros.

Region / California

View more wines from California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Country / United States

View more wines from United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

This is a beautiful wine with juicy fruit. Tile and iron undertones add an iodine note. Medium to full body and round tannins. Fresh and flavorful. Very pretty length and intensity. Hints of spice, stone and walnuts. Elegant and beautiful. Tight and structured. Drink or hold. Better after 2023.

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Au Paradis, from Peter Michael’s parcel in the hills of Eastern Oakville, is one of the successes of this trying vintage. Red cherry jam, game, smoke, licorice, spice and incense all meld together effortlessly. This is an especially refined wine for a sector in Oakville that seems to lean more naturally towards power. The 2017 spent 18 months in Darnajou barrels, 50% new. I would prefer to cellar the 2017 for a few years, but if enjoyed young, several hours of aeration will do wonders.

Juicy and winey, with a terrific core of ripe blackberry and warmed cassis flavors, laced with licorice root, sage and loam notes. Drives nicely through the finish, showing a touch of polish along the edges as the fruit ripples along. Best from 2022 through 2037. 1,450 cases made. (James Molesworth)
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 13th Feb 2020
Composed of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Cabernet Franc coming from Oakville AVA, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Au Paradis reveals a deep garnet-purple color and charges out of the gate with expressive notes of warm cassis, plum preserves and wild blueberries with hints chocolate mint, candied violets, black loam, truffles and charcuterie. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers bags of juicy fruit with great freshness and solid, ripe, grainy tannins, finishing with laudable purity. 1,450 cases were made.

The 2017 Mr. Evans Proprietary Red (60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 10% Petit Verdot) shows the more focused, linear style of the 2017 vintage. Blackcurrants, cassis, hot asphalt, licorice, and charred meat notes all emerge from the glass of this inky colored effort, and it’s medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and powerful on the palate. Drink it any time over the coming 15–20 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2019
The 2017 Mr. Evans Proprietary Red is blended of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and 11% Petit Verdot aged in 70% new French oak. Very deep purple-black colored, it begins a little closed and broody with notions of aged beef, tapenade, truffles and underbrush, opening out to pronounced black currant cordial, baked blackberries and dried mulberries with a waft of iron ore. Medium to full-bodied, the palate reveals a generous amount of black fruit with firm, ripe tannins and bold freshness, finishing long and earthy. 600 cases produced. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)

RP9898 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2019
The berries at Tychson Hill vineyard were very small in 2017. “This wine totally required baby steps with the extraction,” said winemaker Allison Tauziet. Very deep purple-black in color, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Tychson Hill Vineyard leaps from the glass with vibrant black cherries, warm blackberries and blackcurrant scents with hints of violets, dark chocolate, lavender and camphor plus a fragrant waft of rose hip tea. Medium to full-bodied, the structure is taut, restraining all the tightly packed, energetic black fruit layers, with a wonderfully fine-grained texture and bags of freshness, finishing long and mineral laced. Still very tightly wound, this one needs time, but it should handsomely reward patience.
JD9898 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/31/2020
Starting out, the 2017 Tychson Hill is gorgeous, revealing a saturated purple color as well as a sweet bouquet of blackcurrants, ground herbs, chocolate, toasted bread, and subtle yet high class oak. Full-bodied, beautifully textured, and flawlessly balanced on the palate, it has silky tannins, a stacked mid-palate, and a big finish. This is a backward, primordial beauty that’s going to need 4–5 years of bottle age yet shine for 30 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN96+96+ pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020
The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Tychson Hill is bright, focused and bristling with energy. In 2017, Tychson Hill is more overly tannic and structured than in most years, but all that means is that readers need to be a bit patient. A rush of black cherry, plum, lavender, mint and licorice builds as this explosive Cabernet Sauvignon gradually opens up in the glass. Heady and exotic in its beauty, the 2017 is positively stellar. It reminds me a bit of the 2001, a wine that needed years to soften and be at its very best. That may very well be the case here as well.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2020
A dense, packed version, with lots of steeped black currant and fig fruit forming the core, which expands steadily as it airs, fueled by extra tobacco, dark earth and espresso cream notes. A touch rugged and burly through the finish, an aspect of the vintage. This should cruise in the cellar and tame with time. Best from 2022 through 2038. 550 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Pleasant aromas of dark berry, toasted wood, coffee bean and roasted cocoa show on the nose of this bottling. Chalky tannins make for firm tension on the palate, where those berry and cocoa tones ride fresh acidity into the finish. (Matt Kettmann)

Quite open in feel, with sassafras, cherry compote and plum jam notes backed by a hint of bramble on the finish. Fan-worthy for its expressive fruit. Drink now. 900 cases made. (James Molesworth)

JD100100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/21/2020
Tasting like a great bottle of Château Lafite, the 2017 La Joie is based largely on Cabernet Sauvignon and brought up, I suspect, in mostly new French oak. Deep ruby/purple, with a heavenly bouquet of crème de cassis, lead pencil, cedarwood, graphite, and tobacco, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, an incredible sense of elegance and purity, building tannins, and a great, great finish. This majestic, regal Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon is going to require a decade of cellaring to hit maturity (although it’s far from unapproachable today) and will see its 50th birthday in fine form. I followed this bottle for three days and it never showed a hint of oxidation. This is easily my wine of the vintage in 2017. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP98+98+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th May 2020
A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, the 2017 La Joie has a very deep garnet-purple color. It opens a little closed and broody, giving glimpses of blackcurrant cordial, espresso, charcoal and black truffles to begin, before blossoming out to a whole array of preserved black and blue fruits, dusty soil, crushed rocks and iron ore scents plus a waft of roses. The medium to full-bodied palate is built like a brick house, with firm, grainy tannins and a lively backbone supporting the muscular fruit, finishing very long and mineral laced. The alcohol weighed in at just 13.9% this year (14% on the label), making for a particularly elegant but no less impactful La Joie! 2,500 cases were made.
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2020
The 2017 La Joie is another gorgeous wine in this lineup. Deep, pliant and nuanced, the 2017 is impeccably balanced. Silky and plush, La Joie is especially refined in 2017, and that complements its mid-weight structure so nicely. Hints of rose petal, lavender, mint and blood orange add brightness. The 2017 is a stunning wine by any measure.
