The aromas of iodine and blackcurrants with roses and lavender make the wine extremely perfumed. It’s full-bodied with a tight, fine-tannined palate that shows linear flow through the center palate. It’s vertical and integrated, adding depth and serious quality to the wine.
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2022
The 2019 Bordeaux Blend Almaviva is a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Carménère, 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Merlot from Puente Alto that spent 18 months in three-fourths new barrels. Purple in color. The remarkably detailed nose begins and ends with notes of blackberry, black currant and blueberry, while in between, balsamic aromas ranging from camphor to ash appear along with a whiff of violets. All of the above comes packaged in a cigar box. Sugary initially, the flow is creamy and expansive, with polished tannins, while it grows more compact later on, stretching out the flavors. A red that showcases the best of Maipo. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2021
The 2019 Almaviva is a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Carmenère (from Peumo), 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Merlot, higher in Carmenere and reflecting a warmer and drier vintage when then bottled wine reached 15% alcohol. It fermented with destemmed grapes in stainless steel and matured in French oak barrels, 75% of them new, for 18 months. Here, the Carmenere adds herbal freshness and changes the aromatic profile when compared with the 2019 Epu. 2019 was a good year for Carmenere, which suffers in extremely warm years like 2017, but in moderately warm years like 2019, the variety displays that herbal character and has good density. It’s full-bodied and round, with saturated tannins, tasty, spicy and long, with a dry, serious finish. It’s balsamic, with notes of camphor and a silky and velvety texture. 200,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2021. (Luis Gutiérrez)
WS9595 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 06/22
An exceptional vintage from the joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild (Mouton) and Concha y Toro, this cabernet-focused blend grows at a parcel of the old Tocornal vineyard in Puente Alto. Almaviva’s 148 acres of vines surround the winery on a terrace above the north bank of Maipo River. The cool elevation (2,130 feet) and the alluvial soils take cabernet in an elegant direction, rarely found outside Bordeaux, and rarely reaching the level of this latest release. It made me homesick for Chile, tasting the salt air of the coast and the mountain air of the Andes, the velvet-textured contribution of the carmenère (23 percent of the blend) and the cranberry and currant freshness of the fruit. Tight, floral, spicy and youthfully firm, this wine’s subtle power will sustain it for decades.
WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2022
This Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend shows dried herbs, nutmeg, green bell pepper, and hints of tobacco on the nose. The palate has good structure, medium acidity, and velvet tannins. Oak adds smoky notes to the mix of ripe blueberry and plum. It’s delicate and has a smooth lingering finish. (Jesica Vargas)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - May 31, 2022
Balances elegant floral plum and cherry flavors against a well-structured frame of bitter olive, tobacco and savory notes, which persist from a push of fresh acidity. Ends with dark chocolate and espresso notes and firm tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot. Drink now through 2028. 15,000 cases made, 2,400 cases imported. (MaryAnn Worobiec)

View more wines from Chile

With its stunning, snowy mountains and beautiful beaches, Chile would be captivating even if it wasn’t turning out some of the most interesting and accessible wines in the world. But large producers like Concha y Toro and Casa LaPostolle have put Chile on the wine map with their complex yet value-driven Merlots and Cabernets, and lately smaller regions like Maipo, Casablanca, and the Bio Bio Valley have become more widely available.

Now, Syrah, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc, and even that elusive beast of the wine world--affordable Pinot Noir—have joined the ranks of Chile’s most famous offerings. And don’t forget Chile’s signature grape, Carmenere--a peppery, purpley beast that goes wonderfully with grilled meat dishes. Best of all, Chile offers some of the best value in the world, with many outstanding wines selling for under $12.

Notes of blackberries, dark cherries, blueberries and mint chocolate. It’s full-bodied with tight, firm tannins. Structured, firm and tannic with lots of potential. Try after 2023.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignor Gran Reserva Etiqueta Negra from Isla de Maipo spent 14 months in French barrels and foudres, 20% of them new. Maroon red in color, it offers a nose of black currant and mint plus hints of camphor and a vivacious touch of bay leaf. Complex and juicy with fine-grained tannins, this is a classic Maipo Cab. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2021
Following the line of the 2017, the 2019 Gran Reserva Etiqueta Negra Cabernet Sauvignon keeps good freshness and poise in this warm and dry year. The oak is quite integrated, and the fruit is ripe without excess. There are some spicy and cigar ash notes along with abundant fine-grained tannins typical of the variety. 180,000 bottles produced. Aromas of herbs and fresh flowers with currants and blackberries follow through to a full body with chewy yet polished and refined tannins. This is so harmonious and beautiful. So real and such a great Chilean. 68% cabernet sauvignon, 24% carmenere, 6% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. Give it another two or three years, but already gorgeous.
RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2022
2020 was exceptionally dry, with 75% less rain than usual in the period between May and September, which resulted in an earlier harvest to produce a 2020 Almaviva with 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Carmenère (from Peumo), 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, so with no Merlot this time. The process was as careful as possible, without using any bombs, doing manual and optical sorting of the grapes, pressing in small vertical presses and aging of 20 months in French oak barrels, 73% of them new and the rest second use. The wine reached good ripeness with 14.9% alcohol. It still shows the effect of the élevage a bit, with abundant notes of sweet spices, a creamy touch and some smoke. I tasted it next to the 2019, and the wines have a very similar aromatic palette with a clear note of baked peppers. What was amazing in 2020 was that they harvested the Carmenere almost five weeks earlier than they normally would, and the result is not a green wine at all. As in all dry years, the wines show a little more tannic, a little in the style of the 2017—but the 2020 has more tension than the 2017, and the 2017 was more powerful and with a bigger tannic structure. The 2019 had more volume than the 2018, and the 2020 is closer to the 2019 than the 2018. 200,000 bottles produced. It was bottled during the second half of February 2022. (Luis Gutiérrez)
