This is quite an approachable Zinfandel with all the classic Zin notes—blackberry, blueberry, black cherry, chocolate, fennel, violets—along with resolved tannins and a vivacious acidity. A drink-me-now wine for sure and one can happily do so with a variety of dishes any day of the week. (Stacy Briscoe)

Spry and briary, this Zinfandel is fun to drink, with lively black cherry, licorice and dried sage flavors, which take on richness and cracked pepper accents toward zesty tannins. Drink now through 2031. 4,000 cases made. (Tim Fish)

Most of the fruit for the 2021 Zinfandel Old Vine comes from Sonoma. Ripe ruby hued, the wine is fresh with ripe berries and white pepper spice, as well as roses. Medium-bodied, with good structure, fresh acidity, and fine tannins, it has a fully dry style. It is an outstanding value and would also be an outstanding wine to pour by the glass. Drink it over the next few years. (Audrey Frick)

The bottling is a homage to old-vine Zinfandel—the grapes are indeed wild things. It is concentrated, with aromas of blackberry, blueberry, florals, molasses, black pepper and toasty oak on the nose. The flavors on the palate are ripe black plum, huckleberry coulis and allspice morphing into grilled orange slice, chicory and a dry long, finish. Decant and enjoy with a grilled portobello mushroom burger. (Tonya Pitts)

Right out of the briar patch, this Zin is appealingly rustic, with zesty cherry, cranberry, roasted sage and cracked pepper flavors. Drink now through 2031. 7,614 cases made. (Tim Fish)

The 2021 Zinfandel Old Vines shows plenty of Lodi exuberance. Succulent red/purplish fruit, leather and sweet spice are front and center, with bright acids that perk things up on the mid-palate and finish. The 2021 is delicious and also a terrific value. (Antonio Galloni)

If it’s possible for a full-bodied red to be light on its feet, Barra has figured it out with their Reserve Zinfandel. It’s all about the bright tones of red and black plum lifted by the rose and violet aromatics and complemented by a wet-stone-meets-graphite earthiness. Enjoy this wine now for its youthful vibrancy. Immediate aromas of this wine suggest berries right off the bush—raspberry, boysenberry, cranberry. The palate offers a fine-grained, sandy tannic texture and an energetic acidity that elevates those fresh fruit components. Find additional flavors of fresh fennel and tarragon, gently toasted wood, cacao and a hint of roasted coffee bean. It’s fresh, vibrant, fun and enjoyable. (Stacy Briscoe)
