Sweet berries, cherries, cedar and dried flowers on the nose. Some lemon and lime zest, too! Medium-to full-bodied with tight, integrated tannins that show wonderful length and reserve. So fresh and vivid. Lots of energy. A wonderful, classic wine. Drink or hold.

As with many wines this time, I had two vintages to taste of the Reserva from the Tondonia vineyard, 2009 and 2008, two very different, almost opposite vintages. The 2009 Viña Tondonia Reserva, a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacho and 5% each Mazuelo and Graciano, matured in used American oak barrels for six years. It has some toasted character, with ripe fruit, black rather than red, denoting a warm year but more restrained than the Bosconia Reserva from the same vintage. 2009 is a year of ripeness, concentration and tannin; the wines are powerful, but here you see the finesse of Tondonia in comparison to the more rustic Viña Bosconia. 220,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2017.

From the López de Heredia family’s prime vineyard on a meander of the Ebro just outside of Haro, Tondonia is a blend of tempranillo with 20 percent garnacha along with small amounts of graciano and mazuelo. It’s a little volatile when first released from its long rest in bottle, then it turns silken and mouthwatering with air, a bright, lively and refreshing take on traditional Rioja. Brisk cherry and delicate orange zest notes make this an easy pleasure, fully mature with ample tannins to carry it further, equally at home with a plate of hake cheeks or a rabbit stew.

Remelluri Reserva

2015 / 750 ml.

RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 19th Aug 2021
The estate red 2015 Reserva was produced with Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano from their 86 hectares of vineyards. It’s from an early harvest after a warm and dry year that achieved perfect ripeness with some rain at the end of the cycle. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and oak vats and matured in barrel for 21 months. It combines youth with development, power with elegance and comes through as clean and defined, with a medium to full-bodied palate, focused flavors and a dry but lively finish. 259,400 bottles produced. It was bottled in April and May 2018. (Luis Gutiérrez)

Ripe and beautiful with ripe berries, hazelnuts and spice. Some crushed stone, too. Full-bodied, yet tight and focused. Generous and racy. Goes on for minutes. Drink or hold.

A plush red in a modern style, with dense tannins and lively acidity creating a sinewy frame. An expressive range of boysenberry coulis and black licorice flavors transition to deep notes of ground coffee, tarry smoke and dark chocolate that linger on the sculpted finish. Tempranillo and Graciano. Best from 2024 through 2037. 2,935 cases made, 295 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

Beautiful transparency here with fresh flowers, green tobacco, pine needles, crushed stones and sandalwood. Dark fruits in the center. Full-bodied with a wonderful balance of fruit and fine tannins as well as mineral, fresh bark and delicate purple fruit. Subtlety with energy. Youthful now and drinkable, but even better in 2026. (James Suckling)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Feb 2024
The 2016 Viña Arana Gran Reserva is an elegant blend of Tempranillo with 5% Graciano matured in used American oak barrels for three years. During this time, the wine was manually racked from barrel to barrel, with the help of a candle, six times. It’s ripe at 14.5% alcohol, with pungent notes of forest floor and truffles, dark spices and an earthy touch. It has a powerful palate, with very good freshness and acidity, reflecting the cooler year. It has some tannins that would welcome food. 60,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2021.
