From calcareous soils, the Deidesheimer Riesling 2019 Kalkofen GG offers a clear, intense and aromatic bouquet with very fine aromas of lanolin, clove and vanilla from the oak vats. Full-bodied and enormously juicy on the palate, this is a generous and hedonistic but nevertheless subtle and refined Riesling that reveals ripe peach aromas and a fine, harmonious texture with a quiet, subtly juicy flow. The acidity is delicate and stimulatingly salty on the finish. A gorgeous wine tasted as a sample in May 2020. (Stephan Reinhardt)

This Spatlese beams you up to Cloud 9, from where you have a wonderful view over the beautiful Mosel Valley. In spite of the considerable concentration, this is super-delicate and precise on the barely medium-bodied palate. Enormously long finish, where you barely feel the natural grape sweetness. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 25th Aug 2022
The 2020 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese is pure, clear and flinty on the concentrated nose that is reminiscent of a fresh fruit salad served on a slate plate on an early summer morning. Light, lush and highly finessed but seriously structured on the palate, this is a savory, very clear and elegant Sonnenuhr Spätlese with great precision and finesse and highly stimulating salinity and mouth-watering grip on the finish. The acidity is crystalline and very delicate, making this another great Mosel Spätlese from the 2020 vintage. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 37 21 in July 2022. (Stephan Reinhardt)

An energetic, well-built wine, with juicy peach, fleshy lychee and guava flavors set against fine mineral and racy acidity. Delivers a flash of ginger, which adds nice warmth to the zesty finish. Drink now through 2040. 160 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Still extremely youthful, this 2021 riesling GG is going to take a while to come out of its shell. However, the combination of concentrated citrusy fruit and fresh herb finesse is already very apparent. Bone dry, but beautifully balanced and polished at the very long finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.

Catoir’s Haardter Riesling 2021 Bürgergarten “Im Breumel” GG VDP. Grosse Lage opens with a deep, clear and aromatic yet also elegant, pure, refined and complex bouquet of ripe and juicy fruits intermingled with iodine and even some flinty notes. Juicy, round and savory on the palate, with animating saline and grippy minerality, this is a dense, tight and structured dry Breumel Riesling that shouldn’t be on sale at this early stage since the very best is still to come here. The wine was still very young at the GG tasting in Wiesbaden in August when it showed a good yet still robust finish, but it was only slightly more open and refined in December this year. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork stopper. (Stephan Reinhardt)

This starts very quietly and gently with a wafting cloud of floral aromas, but then your gaze is pulled into the base of this Gothic cathedral window, pulling you ever further upward until you are staring at the heavens. Supernatural energy and vitality, the wet stone character cascading over your palate at the super-long finish. Doesn’t want to stop! From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold. (Stuart Pigott)

Here is a great Mosel Kabinett that needs a bit more time to show what it is really made of. Still very young with a pronounced yeasty character that slowly recedes with aeration, but the white peach and honeysuckle aromas that emerge are stunning. Extremely vibrant and precise, the slatey acidity making this fabulously graceful. As pure as an Alpine stream running with glacier water. Drinkable now, but best from 2025. (Stuart Pigott)

This elegant version starts off closed before opening to reveal flavors of jasmine, sweet green apple and Asian pear. Shows impressive purity and inner density, with accents of fresh-cut chive and wet slate. Bitter, pithy acidity moves through, making for the shimmering, razor-edge finish, which lingers. Drink now through 2040. 300 cases imported. (Kristen Bieler)

This wonderful Mosel Kabinett has a wide spectrum of white tree fruit, wild berry and herb aromas. Impressive concentration on the very focused light-bodied palate. I love the racy acidity and pronounced slatey minerality that is wrapped around the very long and clean finish. Drink or hold. (Stuart Pigott)

Here’s a very classic Mosel Spatlese with exactly the combination of richness, elegance and delicacy that makes this category unique. Such delicate white peach and sliced pear, rose and honeysuckle aromas. Very long finish that is as succulent as it is refined. You just want to linger there for as long as you can. Drink or hold. (Stuart Pigott)

There’s a litheness to this elegant version, with a finessed, angular feel to the notes of green plum, star fruit and nectarine underscored by crushed slate accents and a hint of chamomile. Focused and pure, with an inner density that builds, this compact and tightly wound white is one for the cellar. Best from 2025 through 2042. 280 cases imported. (Kristen Bieler)

Striking nose of garden herbs with just a hint wet earth underlining the delicate white tree fruit aromas. Stunning concentration and energy on the super-straight medium-bodied palate. Very long, almost perfectly balanced finish that is surprising for this category at this early stage in the wine’s development. Great slate expression. Drink or hold. (Stuart Pigott)

A plush, alluring style, with apricot, guava and creamed pear flavors backed by a layer of finely crushed mineral notes. The texture is creamy and chalky, offering a stream of fruit punctuated by dried herb accents and a dusting of fleur de sel. Radiant, pure and long, with energy in reserve. Drink now through 2040. 250 cases imported. (Kristen Bieler)

Schloss Gobelsburg Ried Heiligenstein

Kamptal Riesling
2020 / 750 ml.

RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 8th Dec 2022
Gobelsburg’s 2020 Ried Heiligenstein 1ÖTW opens with a clear, bright and savory bouquet of sandstone, salt, ripe stone fruits and tea. Lush and round on the palate, this is a textured, very elegant and balanced Heiligenstein Riesling with a lingering, fine salinity on the highly elegant and aromatic finish. This is again an excellent, quiet and perfectly balanced Riesling from one of the greatest Riesling sites along the Danube River. The 2020 already drinks beautifully but can be aged for two or three decades. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in September 2022. (Stephan Reinhardt)

This fascinating and extremely complex dry riesling has an incredibly wide aroma spectrum, from rhubarb and ripe gooseberry to wild flowers and herbs. At once rich and tense, with tons of wet stone minerality, this is precisely balanced on the blade of a razor-sharp knife. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
