RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Sep 2022
The long-distance runner 2018 Sot Lefriec is now released earlier than in the past, but the wine still needs some time in bottle to show its true colors. Each year they try to produce the best wine possible from their vineyard in Lavern, and as such, the blend changes. In the cooler 2018 vintage, the wine is a blend of 50% Cariñena, 35% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon with 13.8% alcohol, a pH of 3.4 and 6.3 grams of acidity. It matured in French oak barrels, 40% of them new, for 23 months. It’s a serious (think Bordeaux rather than Burgundy), structured and powerful red with sweet spices, smoke and traces of oak that are intermixed with floral notes, aromatic herbs and wild berries. It has a lively palate with sharp tannins and very good acidity, coming through as fresh and citrusy. It should age nicely in bottle. This is one of the finest Sot Lefriecs of recent years. 1,300 bottles and 20 magnums were filled in February 2021. (Luis Gutiérrez)

Epoch Estate Blend

2019 / 750 ml.

RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2022
The 2019 Estate Blend is comprised of 51% Syrah, 17% Mourvèdre, 14% Grenache, 7% Tempranillo, 6% Graciano, 3% Carignan and 2% Zinfandel, matured for 19 months in 31% new French oak. Opaque ruby-purple, tones of tar, cigar ash and graphite give way over time to blackberry, blueberry and boysenberry preserves, prosciutto and violet. Full-bodied, ripe and concentrated, it offers pixelated tannins, seamless acidity and a youthfully coiled finish. It deserves 3–5+ years in the cellar to unwind. 1,729 cases produced. (Erin Brooks)

This blend of 51% Syrah, 17% Mourvèdre, 14% Grenache, 7% Tempranillo, 6% Graciano, 3% Carignan and 2% Zinfandel shows how a sum can be much greater than its parts. Deep, dark and hearty aromas of boysenberry jam, woodspice, mocha and loam lead into an extremely textural palate that’s creamy yet tense with tannins. Suave cocoa, berry and graham cracker flavors ride an energized acidity. (Matt Kettmann)
JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 9/26/2022
The 2019 Estate Blend checks in as 51% Syrah, 17% Mourvèdre, 14% Grenache, 7% Tempranillo, and the rest Graciano, Carignan, and Zinfandel. It has a beautiful bouquet of ripe blue fruits as well as ground pepper, violets, and sappy herbs. Medium to full-bodied, it offers a terrific sense of elegance, ripe tannins, and a seamless, compelling mouthfeel that makes it a joy to drink. Count me in as a big fan. It should evolve nicely for at least 7–8 years, although there’s no need to delay gratification. (Jeb Dunnuck)
