Fossacolle Riesci

Rosso di Toscana
2019 / 750 ml.

JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, August 4, 2021
A medium-bodied red with black-cherry and berry aromas, as well as hints of bark and pine needles. Lightly chewy with a pretty, polished-tannin backbone and a long finish. Drinkable now, but better in 2023.
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Feb 2022
I love the sleek retro label design on the Fossacolle 2019 Riesci. This blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Petit Verdot and 20% Merlot is a terrific and easygoing wine, with massive drinking appeal. This 2019 expression shows much better results than we’ve seen in past editions, and I notice that the blend of grapes has changed over the years to include more Cabernet Sauvignon and exclude Sangiovese. This is a universally food-friendly wine that could cozy up to a veggie burger or a grilled steak, depending on your culinary outlook. The wine is redolent of dark fruit and blackberry, and there are plenty of rich plummy tones that segue to dark spice, mesquite and a touch of smoked cedar. I suggest drinking any bottles of this 3,600-bottle release young, to take advantage of that pretty intensity.

Attractive nose, imbedded with copious red-berry and sweet strawberry notes, as well as hints of sweet spices and Mediterranean herbs. Nimble, medium-bodied palate with a juicy, concentrated core of red fruit. Silky, polished and succulent. Drink now.
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2022
A lively red, with a minerally base note and flavors of black and red currant, brambly herbs, mocha, tangy orange peel and iron. Creamy finish. Garnacha, Cariñena, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. Drink now through 2027. 1,705 cases made, 1,000 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

My Favorite Neighbor Harvey & Harriet

Red Wine Blend
2020 / 750 ml.

JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, November 7, 2022
Nice herbs, olives with a hint of savory anchovies, blackcurrants and tobacco to the nose. Juicy and bright with fine, present tannins on a medium- to full-bodied palate. Nicely flattering and fruit-forward, too. Drink or hold.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2022
Medium ruby-purple, the 2020 Red Blend is savory and less defined than the rest of the lineup, with aromas of bell pepper, chargrill and tar over a core of red and black currants. The full-bodied palate offers a core of savory fruit, firm, grainy tannins and just enough juicy acidity on the finish to call you in for another sip. (Erin Brooks)

Bootleg

2017 / 750 ml.

VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2020
The 2017 Red Blend is a Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend, mostly from mountain sites in Napa Valley and about 11% from Knights Valley in Sonoma. Bold and punchy, the 2017 offers an intriguing combination of inky dark fruit and structure. More than that, though, the 2017 offers tons of pure drinking pleasure at a mid-tier price. (Antonio Galloni)
JD9191 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/21/2020
The 2017 Bootleg Red Wine checks in as 73% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Merlot that’s mostly from Howell Mountain, yet includes fruit from Spring Mountain, Knights Valley, and Diamond Mountain. Plenty of crème de cassis, tobacco leaf, cedary herbs, and a touch of chocolate all emerge from the glass of this plump, rounded, undeniably delicious 2017 that does everything right. Enjoy it over the coming 4–6 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, August 9, 2022
Creamy cassis, dark olives and tomato leaf with hints of cedar and incense. A flattering, full-bodied red with creamy oak and fine-grained tannins on the palate, before a long finish with some vanilla and sweet spices. Drink from 2023.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2022
The 2020 Red Blerd Gran Reserva Etiqueta Azul is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with 10% Syrah, 9% Cabernet Franc and 6% Malbec from Fundo Tarapacá in the Maipo Valley. Aged in varied-use barrels for up to 16 months, it’s an intense purple in color with a nose of cassis, black tea, spice, bay leaf and other subtle flavors. Sugary and voluminous, it delivers active, fine-grained tannins that gently tickle the gums. Balsamic flavors appear toward the end. A well-made red from a warm terroir. (Joaquín Hidalgo)

JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/26/2023
The 2021 Insoglio del Cinghale is rich with crushed lavender, purple plum, mocha, and black pepper and plush and compelling with its aromatics. Ful-bodied, it is ripe with dark black cherry fruit, turned earth, and a clean lift off the finish. There are well integrated tannins and has a pleasing mineral touch. The former wine director in me would jump on this as a fantastic wine by the glass option, as it casts a large net of appeal and checks a lot of boxes for the price. Drink 2023–2030. (Audrey Frick)

A sleek red highlighted by blackberry, black cherry and violet flavors, with hints of iron and black olive tapenade lingering on the dusty finish. Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2028. 300,000 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)

Tips for Enjoying Your Red Blends Wines

To get the most out of your red blends under $40, serve them at room temperature, ideally between 60°F and 65°F. This helps to unleash the rich flavors and aromas that define these wines. Red blends are versatile when it comes to food pairings - they beautifully complement dishes like roasted meats, hearty pastas, and aged cheeses. For an enhanced tasting experience, let the wine breathe for about 30 minutes before enjoying. This simple step allows the wine to oxidize slightly, smoothing out the flavors and bringing forward the unique characteristics of the blend.
