The non-vintage Otima 10-Year Old Tawny Port reveals a medium ruby/amber/garnet color, loads of kirsch and cedar intermixed with a touch of brown sugar in the nose, rich, full-bodied flavors, a burgeoning complexity and big aromatics. This is a full-bodied, silky smooth Tawny Port that should age easily for 8–10+ years.

An aged tawny that manages effortlessly to combine the freshness of a 10-year-old with the dry, cask-aged flavors of an older tawny. It has dried apricot flavors and orange marmalade, but there is also dryness from wood aging and good concentration.

There’s good intensity here, with a racy hazelnut edge alongside the core of singed walnut, sesame, toffee and cinnamon notes. Offers a focused, dry edge through the finish. Drink now. 13,400 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

The NV Otima 10 Year Old Tawny Port was bottled in 2014. Tasted with a group of other “10s,” this Otima was immediately recognizable simply because of its lighter color. Nothing else was close to it, including others that were more on the light side. This is a Tawny that’s intended to be a bit different, lighter and more elegant, easier to drink. You’ll either gravitate to its style or you won’t. While it is not always going to be everyone’s first choice in long-aged Tawnies, it succeeds well on its own terms and in its own context. Unctuous in texture, very sweet and remarkably elegant, this is most enhanced by its lovely and lingering finish, chock full of flavor. Never even a little bit heavy, and with the power, aromatics and concentration well constrained also, this should be an easy drinker that is universally popular. Barring cork failures, it will hold fine for a couple of decades or more, but it’s not intended to be aged. Note that this has a bar top cork. The price references a 500-milliliter bottle.

A dry wine, firmly tannic, although also with acidity and black currant fruit. Spices and licorice add interest, while the tannins finish this attractive wine.

The NV Six Grapes Reserve Port is a blend of typical grapes aged in used wood for up to three years. It comes in with 114 grams per liter of residual sugar and was bottled with a bar-top cork in August 2018. In the Symington lineup this issue, this iconic brand is the polar opposite of the Dow. In comparison, the Dow is rounder and bigger but also a bit flatter and with less well-defined fruit, while this is more lifted and fresher, with better focus and more intensity on the finish. It has a beautiful expression of fruit as well. I’ve seen it available on the street for a lot less than that “suggested” release price, so don’t hesitate to look around.

Lots of sweet dark plum and sweet cherry flavors dominate, with plenty of milk chocolate. Clean and balanced on the straightforward finish. Drink now. 30,000 cases made.

JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, October 5, 2022
Aromas of dried fruits and lots of blackberries. Some wet earth with, of course, alcohol. It’s full-bodied, medium sweet with slightly chewy tannins. Shows tension and focus. Really solid and delicious. Drink now, but will improve with age. (James Suckling)
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 28, 2023
Juicy, open and inviting, with a solid core of blackberry and mulberry preserves judiciously laced with cocoa, fruitcake and black licorice notes. Fresh, bramble-tinted finish. Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Roriz and Tinto Cao. Drink now through 2027. 3,554 cases made. (James Molesworth)
JD9191 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/6/2023
A more heady, intense effort, the 2016 Late Bottled Vintage Port offers up a deep ruby/purple hue to go with classic Port notes of candied plums, cigar box, incense, orange liqueur, and exotic spices on the nose. These carry to a medium to full-bodied Port with solid underlying structure and solid length on the finish. While there’s tons to love here, the alcohol slightly overwhelms this more mid-weight effort and a touch more density and concentration would go a long way toward balancing this beauty out, but this is nitpicking. This is a spicy, complex, elegant LBV to drink over the coming decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)
