This red delivers a winning combination of cherry, menthol, licorice, tobacco and tar aromas and flavors. Harmonious despite its youth, with a superb aftertaste of licorice and herb. Terrific length. Best from 2022 through 2038. 333 cases made, 100 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Nada’s flagship 2014 Barbaresco Rombone is terrific, but the influence of French oak is starting to become more evident as the house relies more on cask for the other Barbarescos. Black cherry, plum, espresso, smoke, licorice and lavender infuse this explosive, virile Barbaresco. I can only wonder what the Rombone might taste like if it were aged entirely in cask, as the other Barbarescos are.

RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020
The Basarin vineyard was badly damaged by hail in April 2017, but we have this beautiful vintage to focus on instead. The Sottimano 2016 Barbaresco Basarin is a contained and elegant expression with sharp intensity and defined aromas. You get wild fruit, spice, balsam herb and crushed mineral, all pretty much in equal measure. The wine flexes its muscle, adding volume and weight with each swirl of the glass. It shows energy and fluid movements. Sottimano farms a three-hectare plot in Basarin, in Neive but near the border with Treiso, with 50- to 60-year-old vines. Some 5,000 bottles were made. There is a wholeness to this vintage that you don’t get in 2017.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2018
The 2016 Barbaresco Basarin is bold, rich and expansive on the palate, with striking depth and tons of textural resonance. The dark, spiced flavors are typical of Barbarescos from Neive. Creamy, silky and inviting, the Basarin offers tremendous near and medium term appeal. More importantly, the 2016 is several notches more interesting than the 2015.
VN93+93+ pts. - Vinous - Nov 2019
The 2016 Barbaresco Basarin is elegant, perfumed and gracious. Sweet dark cherry, lavender, spice and mint all grace this nuanced, understated Barbaresco from Sottimano. The Basarin shows a decidedly aromatic, finessed expression of Neive. The 2016 has shut down a bit since I tasted it last year, but that should not be an issue, as it won’t be released until 2020.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2021
Savory notes of eucalyptus, leather, tar and iron frame the black cherry and black currant fruit in this muscular red. The beefy tannins are front and center now, yet this has plenty of ripe fruit to match. The finish is long and lively. Best from 2024 through 2042. 1,083 cases made, 350 cases imported. The 2017 Barbaresco Rabajà is powerful and sinewy in the glass. It will need a few years in bottle to soften. Iron, dried herbs, chalk, mint and white pepper add a brilliant aromatic top register. Give it a few years to soften.

The 2017 Barolo Cannubi is sensual, polished and a real delight to taste. Soft and effusive, with lovely aromatic presence, the Cannubi will drink well with minimal cellaring. Sweet dried cherry, mint, spice, crushed rose petal and sweet pipe tobacco all grace this super-appealing, mid-weight Barolo from the Rinaldi family. The 2017 is a bit light, but it is super delicious today.
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021
The Francesco Rinaldi & Figli 2017 Barolo Cannubi shows a large span of aromas with dark cherry, plum and cassis. There is a little less definition in this hot-vintage expression (compared to the exacting precision of the 2016 vintage that I remember so fondly). However, the wine sports its broad shoulders with grace and poise. Dark fruit aromas are fleshed out by spice, tar and crushed flowers.

RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jun 2022
The Produttori del Barbaresco 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico is especially broad and thick in texture. It feels generous to the senses, wrapping thickly over the palate with a pretty mix of firm tannins and soft fruit fiber. These elements help to increase both the volume and the persistence of this classic wine. There is some dryness on the finish (and 15% alcohol), and you also taste crushed mineral and stone. Production is 10,000 bottles. I give this wine an edge in terms of future aging potential.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022
The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico is one of the stand-outs in this range. It shows the piercing tannins typical of this site, and yet has more than enough fruit to balance those tannins, certainly moreso than wines like the Rabajà. This exposed site benefits from cooling winds from the north, clearly a benefit in 2017. Even in the early going, the balance here is terrific. In 2017, the Montefico is one of the clear stand outs in the range.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2022
Marked by plum and menthol, this also has elements of iron, tar and tobacco. Muscular and brooding, with a strong grip of tannins on the finish. Best from 2026 through 2043. 1,388 cases made, 350 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jun 2022
The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is darkly concentrated and among the richest wines in this series of single-vineyard Riservas. Montestefano is angular, textured and bold with dark fruit aromas, dried blackberry, toasted almond and cured tobacco. With this vintage, you get an age-worthy wine that offers brawn and power for drinking in the medium term, but it will become increasingly silky and slender with time. Dusty tannins and crushed stone appear on the long finish. There were 14,486 bottles produced.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2022
Dense and rich, if on the austere side now, courtesy of burly tannins, with black cherry, plum, tar and mineral serving as the main flavor themes. Reveals terrific energy and length, with a chalky feel on the finish. Best from 2027 through 2045. 1,362 cases made, 300 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jun 2022
One of the bigger productions (with 17,744 bottles) in the Produttori del Barbaresco’s portfolio is the 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello. All of the Riservas in this vintage are characterized by especially exuberant and bold aromas, and this bottle is a prime example. Cassis, wild cherry, tobacco, rusty nail and licorice build intensity. The wine is tapered and silky in texture, but it also offers a good amount of power (and 15% alcohol) to carry it through the aging process.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2022
Taut and sinewy, boasting cherry, black currant, grass, iron and tar notes. Powerful tannins drive the finish, which is compact for now. In the end, this is lightly astringent, but has plenty of drive and should find equilibrium with time. Best from 2026 through 2043. 1,580 cases made, 350 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022
The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is a heady, explosive wine. I don’t think I have ever tasted an Ovello from the Produttori with this much heft. The strong mineral and saline accents typical of this site are present, but they are matched pound for pound by notable mid-palate richness and intensity in its fruit. The 2017 is a brooding powerhouse that needs time to unwind.

Earthy aromas of forest floor, grilled herb and a balsamic note come together in the glass. The firm, tightly wound palate shows dried cherry, pomegranate, clove and cinnamon while taut, fine-grained tannins provide support. It’s vibrant, with bright acidity. Drink after 2023. (Kerin O’Keefe)

I appreciate the purity of fruit in this Barolo with strawberry, cherry and orange zest character. Medium body, fine tannins with fresh acidity at the end. Give it a try in 2020.
WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2017
Aromas of underbrush, wild berry, iris, grilled herb, vineyard dust and a balsamic note take center stage. The polished palate offers morello cherry, raspberry compote, baking spice and anise alongside refined tannins and fresh acidity. It’s already tempting and nicely balanced but hold for more complexity. Drink 2021–2030. (Kerin O’Keefe)

RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 11th Aug 2022
With fruit from above the village of Barolo, the G.D. Vajra 2018 Barolo Coste di Rose shows a large aromatic scope and ample substance. This vineyard is characterized by very high density Diano sandstone (typical of the area), which explains the wine’s bigger sensorial impact. Its texture is velvety and smooth, and the wine offers lots of purple and red fruits with soft earth and perfumed flower. The vintage is open knit and broad in scope, perhaps lacking some of the brilliant focus you get in the cooler years. This wine was first produced in 2015. (Monica Larner)
WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2022
Linear and tightly wound, this opens with aromas of crushed mint, spice and forest floor. Full-bodied and firmly structured, the palate is still rather austere, offering crushed raspberry, ripe cherry, clove and tobacco set against a backbone of fine-grained tannins. Drink after 2028. (Kerin O’Keefe)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 15, 2022
Intense and vibrant, displaying cherry, plum, earth, iron and tar flavors. The tannins are dense and assertive, yet this has energy and length, with all the components in the right place. Best from 2025 through 2043. 400 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)
JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, October 2, 2022

Fragrant, focused and loaded with finesse, this impressive red opens with aromas of iris, red berry, spice and camphor. Elegantly structured and savory, the vibrant palate features juicy raspberry, Morello cherry, star anise and wild mint framed in taut, fine-grained tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it well balanced. Drink 2024–2034. (Kerin O’Keefe)
JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, October 5, 2022
Lots of plum, ripe strawberry and crushed nutmeg. Hazelnut too. Full-bodied with firm and velvety tannins and a chewy finish. A wine with energy and structure. Try after 2025.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2022
Enticing aromas of cherry, strawberry, hay, sweet grass and iron mark this smooth, velvety red. Shows ample structure, yet this is harmonious overall, with a beam of pure cherry lingering. Best from 2024 through 2038. 830 cases made, 125 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jun 2022
The Elvio Cogno 2019 Barbaresco Bordini hits all the right chords, striking at elegance, balance and a transparent approach that highlights the character of the vintage and this vineyard in Neive. This is a medium-bodied wine with polished tannins and a delicate flavor profile focused on wild berry, licorice and crushed stone. Some 10,000 bottles were made. (Monica Larner)

Domenico Clerico Barolo

del Comune di Monforte d’Alba
2018 / 750 ml.

RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 11th Aug 2022
The team at Domenico Clerico interprets this vintage with elegance and intensity. These two contrasting descriptors can be applied to the 2018 Barolo del Comune di Monforte d’Alba, which shows excellent balance overall. The bouquet reveals dark fruit, ferrous earth, licorice and grilled herb. But you also get lifted aromas of wild roses and violets over a generous, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel. (Monica Larner)
JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, October 2, 2022
Tight and focused on the nose with clean red berries and oak. Expands a little on the medium-to full-bodied palate, but still rather closed, with an elegant framework of very fine, lightly firm tannin and a dense core of fruit. The balance of fruit and tannin already gives a long finish. Needs to unravel a bit, but the essential ingredients are very fine indeed. Try from 2024.

Luigi Baudana Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba

del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba
2019 / 750 ml.

VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023
The 2019 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba shows all the breadth of Serralunga, but in the somewhat austere style that runs through all the wines this year. Dark red fruit, sage, mint, leather and spice fill out the layers effortlessly. Rich and ample, yet super-classic, the Serralunga Barolo hits all the right notes. It may very well be the hidden gem in the entire Vajra range. (Antonio Galloni)
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2023
Packs a kernel of cherry, raspberry, floral and iron flavors wrapped tightly in a dense matrix of tannins. This red is lean and focused, with vibrant acidity and dusty tannins. Shows fine length. Best from 2026 through 2043. 580 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)
