The Sordo 2017 Barolo exhibits a thin color and appearance with bright ruby highlights. This wine is full of good surprises, starting off with the purity and focus of the bouquet that surprisingly beats the 2016 vintage, in my opinion. Wild berry and dried raspberry cede to spicy licorice and smoky tar. The tannins are quite tight, and there is a lasting point of astringency that may never fully fade. The bouquet is more integrated than the palate at this stage. An ample 150,000 bottles were produced. (Monica Larner)

The wine sits well on the palate, even at this young stage, thanks to fresh acidity and integrated tannins. This is a good-looking bottle for near and medium-term consumption. The 2019 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba is strong in terms of bouquet with an immediate whiff of toasted oak or cedarwood that overlaps with the more delicate nuances of Nebbiolo. Those spicy notes are played up in a vintage that tends to offer more concentration and fruit richness naturally. The oak still needs time to integrate, and the tannins are on the dry side.
