Lightly firm, with singed juniper lending a taut feel along the edges of the dried plum, steeped cherry and cinnamon notes that form the core. A taut, woodsy hint hangs on the finish. Drink now. 150 cases imported.

RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 27th Apr 2018
The 2016 Classic is a blend of Garnacha, Cariñena, Syrah and Macabeo from a cooler year, with ripe fruit but keeping balance. It’s a vintage Fredi Torres likes (he didn’t produce a 2015). The wine has moderate alcohol and good acidity that provides a lively palate. The vines are grown on slate and some granite soils, which provide a certain austerity on the palate. It fermented with 25% full clusters and indigenous yeasts; only 20% of the wine matured in used barrels for ten months, while the rest was kept in stainless steel. It has a sharp palate and very fine tannins. 13,000 bottles were filled in August 2017.

Puech-Haut Prestige

2018 / 750 ml.

JD9191 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/29/2020
Based on Syrah and Grenache brought up mostly in concrete tanks, the 2018 Languedoc Prestige comes from older vines and limestone soils not far from the Pic Saint Loup appellation in the Languedoc. Incredibly consistent, it sports a deep purple hue as well as a ripe, sexy bouquet of both red and black fruits intermixed with lots of spice, chocolate, and earthy, peppery nuances. Beautifully textured, medium to full-bodied, with a pure, velvety mouthfeel and a great finish, it’s going to evolve for a solid 3–5 years, possibly even a decade, although there’s no need to delay gratification, as it’s beautiful today. RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2019
The Grenache-dominated 2017 Minervois Las Combes is bright, fresh and fruity, with almost candied cherry, pomegranate and even tangerine notes accented by Christmas spices and garrigue. This medium-bodied beauty should be a delight to drink over the next few years. (Joe Czerwinski)
SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2020
An zesty red, with bright flavors of wild raspberry, cherry and orange peel, cast with mineral, white pepper and herb details. Notes of fresh earth mark the moderately tannic finish. Distinctive. Drink now through 2024. 600 cases made, 300 cases imported. (Gillian Sciaretta)

JD93+93–95 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 9/26/2018
While not yet bottled, the 2016 Vacqueyras Les Ceps D’Or appears to be one of the top wines from the appellation. Made from mostly Grenache, with a splash of Mourvèdre, it boasts sensational notes of red fruits, flowers, forest floor, and hints of limestone-like minerality. This medium-bodied, finesse-driven effort has more than a passing resemblance to a Grand Cru Red Burgundy and does everything right. It’s going to drink beautifully for over a decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020
Brilliant ruby. Fragrant aromas of fresh red and blue fruits, spicecake and candied flowers, along with an emerging smoky element. Silky and seamless in texture, offering concentrated and surprisingly energetic black raspberry and boysenberry flavors braced by a core of juicy acidity. Closes sweet, gently tannic and impressively long, delivering emphatic red fruit and a clinging floral pastille note.
RP90+90–92+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2018
The prospective blend of the 2016 Vacqueyras les Ceps d’Or contained an elevated level of carbon dioxide, which made it difficult to evaluate. I expect it will perform better from bottle. It’s full-bodied and concentrated, with a rich mouthfeel and complex spice notes layered over ripe fruit.

Pegaso Zeta

2019 / 750 ml.

RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 11th Nov 2021
2019 was a warm and challenging year in Gredos, with frost in March, hail in the summer and rains close to the harvest date. The 2019 Pegaso Zeta was produced with old-vine Garnacha on granite and schist soils. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in oak and stainless steel vats and amphorae, and it matured in a combination of 500- and 600-liter barrels, amphorae and stainless steel for 12 months. It’s aromatic and expressive, with red fruit and herbs and unnoticeable oak. It’s round and juicy, powerful and balanced with some grainy tannins. It’s a wine that should do very well with food. 17,021 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2020.

Moving to the reds, the 2020 Vacqueyras Les Hauts De La Ponche is 50% Grenache and 25% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre. It actually reminds me of a Pomerol with its red and blue fruits as well as bouquet garni, damp earth, and floral nuances. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, I love its balance, and it has silky tannins and remarkable purity of fruit. Drink bottles over the coming 7–8 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/8/2023
From an estate purchased by Jeff Carrel in 2016, the 2021 Côtes du Roussillon Les Petites Grappes is equal parts Grenache and Carignan from pure granite soils. Beautiful, almost Northern Rhône-like notes of ripe red and black fruits, smoked meats, graphite, and pepper, as well as a beautiful minerality, define the aromatics, and it’s fresh, focused, and elegant, with beautifully integrated acidity. It’s a stunning bottle of wine. (Jeb Dunnuck)

A succulent blend of 50% grenache and 50% carignan expressing notes of sour cherries, redcurrants, thyme and bay leaves with hints of mild spices, too. Medium body with fine tannins and fresh acidity. It’s bright, pure and crunchy with silky texture and a precise, vibrant finish. Drink now. (James Suckling)

A pretty complex nose of cherries, berries, dried herbs, cola and baking spices. It’s medium-bodied with finely grained tannins. Round and juicy with a bright core of cherries and some chocolate undertones towards the finish. Balanced and delicious with a vivid finish. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)

Baked cherry and cassis overlay warm earth and sweet baking spices in this red, which is solidly structured, with sinewy tannins coming into play and charred alder notes adding to the dark, brooding frame. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. Drink now through 2026. 6,600 cases made, 3,000 cases imported. (Kristen Bieler)

Leading off the Château Pégau releases, the 2020 Côtes Du Rhône Maclura has textbook southern France-like garrigue, leather, pepper, and both red and black fruits in a medium-bodied, nicely balanced, charming style. It’s perfect for enjoying over the coming 4–5 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
