Yellow-gold. Leesy peach, pear and floral honey aromas are complemented by vanilla bean and buttered toast qualities. Plump-verging-on-sweet, with broad tropical and orchard fruit flavors, soft acidity and a pliant texture. Delivers a deep impression of apricot nectar on the long, fleshy finish. Seriously packed with flavor and impressively seamless, but I wish that there were more nerve and vivacity. Fans of the type will likely rate this higher.
SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2008
Superrich and perhaps a tad sweet, with a mix of fig, melon, pineapple and butterscotch, ending with a rich, cloying aftertaste. Drink now

Slate, graphite, dried pear, almonds, crushed flowers and sage emerge from the 2013 Chardonnay Joy Road Vineyard. The flavor profile is quite a bit more floral and savory than the other Chardonnays in the range, with the fruit pushed a bit into the background. The Joy Road is the most subtle and layered of the Rivers-Marie Chardonnays. In many ways, it is the most evocative as well.

The 2014 Chardonnay Joy Road Vineyard is another powerful wine built on intensity, but it is also a bit narrow next to the other wines in the range. With time in the glass, the wine wine opens up nicely, releasing hints of lemon peel, white flowers and smoke. Readers should plan on giving the 2014 a good bit of air.

RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2019
All shot Wente clone selection, this 2017 Chardonnay was aged for 19 months in barrel. It leaps from the glass with totally flamboyant notes of apricot tart, pineapple upside down cake and guava plus suggestions of honeycomb, allspice and candied ginger. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is electrically charged with tropical fruit and peachy layers with a laser focused line of crisp acidity, finishing very long and very spicy. 1250 cases made.

The 2020 Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict captures all the magic of this iconic Sta. Rita Hills site. Ample, creamy and inviting, the 2020 is beautifully textured from start to finish. Apricot, lemon confit, white flowers, mint and marzipan build as the 2020 opens with a bit of air. Arnot-Roberts pulls fruit from the old-vine section of S&B, which was planted in 1971 with own-rooted vines.

From a vineyard owned by the Martinelli family and planted to Old Wente cuttings from Hyde Vineyard, this wine opens in a quiet nose of apple blossom and stone. Creamy, with substance and structure, it is floral, earthy and citrusy, with a taste of Key lime.

The 2021 Chardonnay Stone Cote Vineyard is also a youthful golden hue, with aromas of fresh peach, flinty earth, and lemon rind. Full-bodied, it boasts a supple and soft texture, with round fruit up front and fresh lift on the finish. Offering up a luxurious feel on the palate, with well-managed notes of sweet baking spices, honeydew melon, and wet stone, it’s long on the palate and has a good finish. Drink 2024–2030. The 2021 Chardonnay Calesa Vineyard, matured in 35% new French oak, features intense lemon jelly and nectarine aromas on the nose with wafts of chalk and beeswax. The medium-bodied palate is wonderfully satiny and concentrated, its ripe fruit complemented by energetic acidity and well-integrated oak spices, and it boasts a lengthy, mouth-coating finish with soaring citrus flavors. 1,210 cases were made. Impressive, with density and concentration to the notes of marmalade, limoncello and white flowers. The core of Meyer lemon and apricot pastry shows hints of salted butterscotch and smoky litsea oil that linger on the long, mouthwatering finish. Drink now through 2036. 2,600 cases made, 168 cases imported. (MaryAnn Worobiec)
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2023
The 2022 Maté’s Vineyard Chardonnay offers tension, power and an unrelenting sense of moving forward as if your palate has been put on a travelator. This is its 30th anniversary vintage. Currently it’s closed and young with little aromatic generosity. There’s nevertheless purity and a real sense of density. The richness is there but it’s held within a brace of tension, ensuring precision and focus. After a couple of days, it loosens up a little so if you’re thinking of opening it early, which I don’t recommend, decanting may be your friend. I probably prefer the 2021 for its additional austerity but that may be me being subjective rather than objective. (Rebecca Gibb MW)
