Portuguese wine is one of the latest trends in spectacular value, encompassing a range of reds and whites that cover all of the popular styles. Of course, as far as classic wine, Portugal does have a tendency toward the indigenous and unfamiliar grapes.

Everyday white wines from Portugal are often light-bodied and crisp with less oak (especially their flagship, Vinho Verde), while the reds are often medium-bodied and fruit-forward. Fine wines, on the other hand, can be more complex and/or fuller-flavored, in a vein similar to those produced in nearby Spain or southern France.

  1. Casa Santos Lima Colossal Reserva

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#84828

    WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2018
This is certainly an intensely structured wine, but its name seems rather excessive for what are balanced fruit and juicy tannins. It has a smooth, minty character, bold berry fruits and a ripe full texture. The tannins and acidity will allow the wine to age further well into 2019, although it can be drunk now.

  2. Pocas Vale de Cavalos

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#83206

    WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 11/1/2018
The Douro Superior region, where these vineyards are, has developed a strong reputation for its wines. In this rich wine, bold red fruits are followed by a juicy character with plenty of acidity to balance the ripe fruit. The wine is complex and developing well. Drink from 2020.
    RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2018
The 2016 Vale de Cavalos red is a blend from old vines of 50% Touriga Nacional, 20% Touriga Franca, 20% Tinta Roriz and 10% Tinta Barroca, aged in an 80/20 mixture of stainless steel and used French oak for six months. It comes in at 13.4% alcohol. The winery said that with this, compared to the 2015, you gain elegance and lose a little in concentration. (From many wineries I hear exactly the opposite, a function of luck and terroir.) It seems just as good as last year’s, maybe better, thanks to the lifted fruit and reasonably long, crisp finish. It has plenty of flavor but never in a jammy or candied way. This is a perfect food wine, easy to drink and easy to like. The bottle will drain fast at the table.
    SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2018
Medium-bodied, with a fresh profile offering boysenberry and cherry fruit flavors matched with spice and floral notes and tangy accents. Details of anise and mineral show on the herb-tinged finish. Moderate tannins. Drink now through 2021. 2,950 cases made, 1,500 cases imported.

  10. Follies Touriga Nacional - Cabernet Sauvignon

    Fonte Nossa Senhora da Vandoma
    2011 / 750 ml. | Item#80298

    WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 6/1/2015
Mainly Touriga Nacional with 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, this is a structured wine. The perfumes of the Touriga are balanced by the tannins of the Cabernet to give a wine that’s dense and firmly full in the mouth. Wood-aged, it has stylishness and a good promise for aging. Drink from 2018.
    RP8787 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 25th Jun 2014
The 2011 Touriga Nacional / Cabernet Sauvignon Follies is a 70-30 blend of Touriga Nacional and Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in French oak (25% first use; 35% second use and 40% third use) for approximately 1 year. It comes in at 14% alcohol. There is not necessarily a lot of depth here, but in other respects it is pretty fine with an amazingly fresh feel to it. Elegant and lifted, this has a lingering and flavorful finish with some hints of complexity. Its demeanor makes it reasonably transparent, too, even with a few oaky nuances. The moderate tannins tighten just a bit with air, but it comes around well. It should hold a few years nicely, but it is approachable now. Drink now–2020.

Clean and bright, this juicy white follows a simple line of flavor. The acidity is lively — mouthwatering coastal refreshment for anything from the raw bar, particularly clams on the half shell.
    SP8686 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2010

  14. Sandeman Twenty Years Old Tawny Porto

    NV / 750 ml. | Item#29858

    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2016
Broad, rich and elegant, with creamy, supple flavors of butterscotch, toasted coconut and hazelnut. The luscious finish is loaded with spice and cocoa details. Seductive. Drink now. 4,000 cases imported.
    WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/15/2008
An elegant tawny, perfumed with soft tannins and a good edge of wood acidity and spirit. The wine is dry, densely flavored, tasting mature, showing a good balance between young sweetness and age, with everything well integrated.
    RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Dec 2018
The NV 20 Years Old Tawny Porto is a typical Douro blend sourced from juice ranging from 15 to 30 years old. It was bottled in September 2018 with a Vinolok cork and 115 grams per liter of residual sugar. This adds a little power and notable complexity to the 10 Year this issue, but it seems a little understated in concentration and surprisingly mature. The brandy is a bit prominent, but that improves. Its bright and gentle demeanor won’t leave you with a “wow” impression, but it sneaks up on you and it’s easy to like eventually. It showed better a few days later, at which point it was notably improved. Maybe some bottle shock plus travel shock before it was tasted rendered it a little closed at first. It finishes with classic flavors laced with caramel nuances. There were 60,000 bottles produced.
    WS8888 pts. - Wine & Spirits - April 1, 2006
Flavors of salted caramel and orange peel give this tawny complexity. It’s warm with more citrus fruit coming up in the end. For fresh roasted almonds.

  15. Paxis Red Blend

    2013 / 750 ml. | Item#82458

    WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 6/1/2016
This dark, structured wine, with its balanced blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz, is firm with tannins and dense berry fruits. Full in the mouth, it is a concentrated wine that brings out a strongly chalky texture. The wine is still moving towards a rich future. Drink from 2017.
