Portuguese wine is one of the latest trends in spectacular value, encompassing a range of reds and whites that cover all of the popular styles. Of course, as far as classic wine, Portugal does have a tendency toward the indigenous and unfamiliar grapes.
Everyday white wines from Portugal are often light-bodied and crisp with less oak (especially their flagship, Vinho Verde), while the reds are often medium-bodied and fruit-forward. Fine wines, on the other hand, can be more complex and/or fuller-flavored, in a vein similar to those produced in nearby Spain or southern France.
WE8686 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2020 This simple, fruity blend has been aged briefly in wood to soften the wine’s bright fruitiness. With light tannins, blackberry fruits and a touch of spice, the wine is ready to drink.
WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2019 From grapes grown in the eastern Douro Superior region, this wine is dense and structured. Its dry core is still young, bringing out rich black fruits and spice. The wine should age further, so drink from 2021.RP8888 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Aug 2019 The 2017 Vale de Cavalos red is a blend from old vines of 50% Touriga Nacional, 20% Touriga Franca, 20% Tinta Roriz and 10% Tinta Barroca, aged in an 80/20 mixture of stainless steel and used French oak for six months. It comes in at 13.7% alcohol. This seems rich and a little jammy. It is immediately impressive because of its big-fruit feel at first, but it lacks some of the freshness of the last couple of vintages. The Coroa and the Reserva this issue might be fresher too. However, this compensates with more depth and roundness, granting that they weren’t all here and tasted side by side. There is a touch of charcoal as well, perhaps a reductive hint, but it doesn’t destroy the performance.SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2020 Black cherry and currant flavors fill this supple, full-bodied red, with underpinnings of black tea, anise and violet lingering into the plush, mineral-edged finish. WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2018 This is certainly an intensely structured wine, but its name seems rather excessive for what are balanced fruit and juicy tannins. It has a smooth, minty character, bold berry fruits and a ripe full texture. The tannins and acidity will allow the wine to age further well into 2019, although it can be drunk now.Premier SelectPremier Select wines are handpicked by our staff from amongst thousands of wines for their exceptional quality. WE8787 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2021 A wine whose sales go towards preserving rare local animal species, this is soft and gently fruity, with just a touch of wood aging. WE8686 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2019 A soft juicy blend of Trincadeira, Aragonez and Syrah, this wine is packed with fruit and the lightest of tannins. It is fresh, fruity, and easy to drink when young — great for barbecue.

SP8989 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2021 Enticing, with mouthwatering griotte and singed mesquite notes mixed with flashes of tobacco and red tea on the racy finish. Aragonês, Touriga Nacional and Alfrocheiro. Drink now through 2023. 50,000 cases made, 4,000 cases imported.RP8888 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Jul 2021 The 2019 Tinto (Casa de Santar) is a blend of 50% Tinta Roriz, 30% Touriga Nacional and 20% Alfrocheiro, aged for six months in a 50/50 blend of new and second use French oak. It comes in at 13.7% alcohol. Nicely done for this nice price, this is a little silky, still filled with flavorful fruit and very graceful. It has a bit of grip on the finish, but this exuberant youngster is built for now and the next couple of years more than for extended aging. It will hold, but that’s not really the point. It’s a perfect restaurant wine at the moment. It’s a nice value today.
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 8/1/2020 Boasting a balanced combination of oak and ripe fruit, this wine is rich and full of juicy spiced-fruit flavors. Flavors of black currant and a hint of toastiness are fully integrated into this ready-to-drink wine. Drink now.

WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2021 While this wine is richly structured it is also generously fruity. Blackberry flavors come through strongly giving this blend of Touriga Nacional and Cabernet Sauvignon a dense texture and a succulent aftertaste. Drink from late 2021.
