Producer Notes
Where It's From
Country / Portugal
Portugal is most famous (and justifiably so) for its Port wines, fortified wines that are typically sweet and often served with dessert. Port wines come in many styles such as Tawny, Late Bottled Vintage, etc, and are classified by how they were produced.
Besides Port, however, Portugal is also one of the fastest-rising wine countries in the world (as far as quality and production) when it comes to table wines. You'll find some unbelievable values in Portuguese table wines, with grapes like Touriga Nacional at the forefront.

Half of the lot for this wine comes from the Quinta da Cavadinha, Warre’s property on the western bank of the Pinhão River, a relatively cool site facing east. The balance is from Retiro, in the Rio Torto and Telhada, a property in the Douro Superior the Symingtons purchased in 2006. Old-vine mixed plantings make up 40 percent of the blend, lending it the kind of co-fermented complexity that makes this compellingly drinkable, delicious right now, as it will be for at least the next 20 or 30 years. Its graceful, reserved finish lasts with drive, a blend of green olive, blueberry skin, purple and blackberry flavors layered over the scent of roses, esteva, black pepper and the wild Douro scrub. If you’re looking to fall in love with Port, you could start here.
A dark, black-fruited wine, with the fruit hanging off the hard tannins. The wine is dark and concentrated, the fruit expressing itself as fragrant black currants. This dry wine is very firm and destined for a serious, long-term future.
Offers seamless flavors of kirsch, chocolate, dark plum and allspice, fresh and elegant, with a towering structure and intense red berry accents. Unctuous and long on the finish, showing loads of grip. Best from 2030 through 2060. 3,000 cases made.
The Warre’s Vintage was picked beginning on September 18 at Quinta da Cavindha, with fruit also sourced from Quinta do Retiro and Quinta da Telhada. It is a blend of 37% Touriga Nacional, 23% Tinta Franca and 40% mixture of old vines. There is a lovely sea spray note on the 2011 Warre’s that emerges after ten minutes in the glass. It is nicely defined with a tangible mineral component. The palate is very well-balanced with fine tannins, very well-judged acidity and a languorous feel, as if everything is in place and it does not want to show off. This is a lovely, refined 2011 — one of the most elegant 2011s. This is a classic Warre’s. 3,000 cases declared. Tasted May 2013.
Bright ruby-red. Slightly high-toned aromas of blackberry, bitter chocolate, violet and licorice. Lush on entry, then densely packed and sweet in the middle, with fruit-driven flavors of kirsch, black raspberry and cassis nicely support by sexy oak tannins. Surprisingly dry and classic on the finish, with harmonious acidity giving the wine terrific balance.

Either the bottle is too large for our packaging (i.e. we cannot ship anything larger than 750 ml), the dimensions/shape of the bottle doesn't fit within our packaging for safe shipment, or this is a widely-distributed wine (e.g. Barefoot, Yellow Tail, etc) which we only sell at our physical store or for in-store pickup.

Fresher in style than the Warrior of the ’90s, this blend is bright and vibrant, filled with luscious fruit inflected by the black pepper of schisty tannins. It’s like a small-scale vintage, beautifully balanced.
The non-vintage Warrior Reserve is a more fruit-driven, less complex style of port. Big, full-bodied, muscular and rich with lots of red and black fruit, licorice, white chocolate and coffee notes, this beauty should keep for another decade.
Forward and direct, with tasty blackberry and blueberry paste flavors, lined with a licorice snap thread. A hint of singed wood lines the finish, giving this a little extra range. Drink now. 10,300 cases imported.
This is a classic Reserve Ruby, full of berry fruits, juicy acidity and light tannins. Hints of dried fruits combine with red berries to give a wine that is stylish and dry in the Warre’s style.

The non-vintage Otima 10-Year Old Tawny Port reveals a medium ruby/amber/garnet color, loads of kirsch and cedar intermixed with a touch of brown sugar in the nose, rich, full-bodied flavors, a burgeoning complexity and big aromatics. This is a full-bodied, silky smooth Tawny Port that should age easily for 8–10+ years.
An aged tawny that manages effortlessly to combine the freshness of a 10-year-old with the dry, cask-aged flavors of an older tawny. It has dried apricot flavors and orange marmalade, but there is also dryness from wood aging and good concentration.
There’s good intensity here, with a racy hazelnut edge alongside the core of singed walnut, sesame, toffee and cinnamon notes. Offers a focused, dry edge through the finish. Drink now. 13,400 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
The NV Otima 10 Year Old Tawny Port was bottled in 2014. Tasted with a group of other “10s,” this Otima was immediately recognizable simply because of its lighter color. Nothing else was close to it, including others that were more on the light side. This is a Tawny that’s intended to be a bit different, lighter and more elegant, easier to drink. You’ll either gravitate to its style or you won’t. While it is not always going to be everyone’s first choice in long-aged Tawnies, it succeeds well on its own terms and in its own context. Unctuous in texture, very sweet and remarkably elegant, this is most enhanced by its lovely and lingering finish, chock full of flavor. Never even a little bit heavy, and with the power, aromatics and concentration well constrained also, this should be an easy drinker that is universally popular. Barring cork failures, it will hold fine for a couple of decades or more, but it’s not intended to be aged. Note that this has a bar top cork. The price references a 500-milliliter bottle.

Long maturation in the bottle after wood aging has given this wine great quality and style. It has a dry edge that is typical of Warre’s, along with mature dried fruit and spice flavors. The wine is fine; it’s ready to drink now. (Roger Voss)
This has matured nicely, offering spice box, singed raisin, Christmas pudding and steeped boysenberry and blackberry compote notes framed by a gentle cedar note. Tasty. Drink now through 2024. 5,000 cases made, 1,500 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

Gorgeous, with warm plum reduction and gently steeped raspberry, blackberry and boysenberry fruit flavors forming the core, all inlaid with warm ganache and smoldering tobacco accents. Very plush in feel, but has no lack of energy, as everything sails beautifully through the long finish. A late echo of anise completes the seduction. Best from 2035 through 2055. 3,000 cases made, 1,000 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
This is a juicy wine, with dense black fruits that are cut by bright acidity. The tannins give power and long-term aging potential to this impressive wine. Drink from 2028.
The 2016 Vintage Port is a 46/37 blend from old vines and Touriga Nacional, with Touriga Franca making up the rest. It was bottled in May 2018 with 113 grams of residual sugar. The fruit on this is gloriously expressive and concentrated. It’s classic and delicious, but it doesn’t show the power and structure of the top wines. Charles Symington called it very elegant. Or, say, understated and approachable. It is pretty delicious, though, and I have to give this some props just because it is. Don’t expect it to be the best ager in the group. There were 4,250 cases produced.

Bottled unfiltered so that it can age, this is a very fine Port. The tannins are now soft, fully integrated into the black fruits and mature texture. This wine is perfectly ready to drink. (Roger Voss)
