Brian Mendola - Premium Wine & Spirits February 21, 2012

"I can remember my friend gave me a bottle of this over the holidays. We wanted to have some port, take a puff on a cigar, and see if it would affect that “aftertaste” of the Port. We were not expecting this, but it brought out some of the flavor profiles of vanilla and dried fruits. This can complement a cigar that is smooth and mellow with earth and medium spice. Cigars that I would recommend for this Port are Isla del Sol, Château Real, and Upper Cut."

From the Producer

Clear red amber colours with a light intense body, open up to aromas of vanilla and evolved dried fruits. The elegant harmony and fresh flavour of red fruits unfold in the mouth and combine with the complexity of wood ageing and a good finish.

Portugal is most famous (and justifiably so) for its Port wines, fortified wines that are typically sweet and often served with dessert. Port wines come in many styles such as Tawny, Late Bottled Vintage, etc, and are classified by how they were produced.

Besides Port, however, Portugal is also one of the fastest-rising wine countries in the world (as far as quality and production) when it comes to table wines. You'll find some unbelievable values in Portuguese table wines, with grapes like Touriga Nacional at the forefront.

Citrus zest accents provide a zesty backdrop to the lush, rich and creamy flavors of butterscotch, white chocolate and café au lait. Fresh and minerally on the finish, with notes of sea salt. Complex and pure. Drink now. 200 cases imported. (Kim Marcus)

This is a beautifully concentrated wine. Rich and dense, it offers dried fruits, spice and intensity. The wine’s spirit edge acts as a lift, bringing out acidity, honey, walnuts and a complex perfumed aftertaste. Drink now.

Pretty, with bergamot, date, fig and caramelized peach flavors gliding through, framed by a caramel note that lingers on the polished finish. This gains intensity as it opens in the glass. Lovely. Drink now. 780 cases made, 300 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

A lovely, high-pitched style, with a honeysuckle note out front, followed quickly by golden raisin, persimmon, glazed peach, heather and white ginger flavors. Light caramel details fill in through the finish, lending a sweet component while leaving the brightness intact. Drink now. 320 cases made, 125 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

Dark raisin and dried apricot flavors manifest on this immensely dark, old goldhued wine. Enormous concentration, as with the initially, almost painful acidity that comes through the spirit. This is an old wine, no question, but not too old, one to be savored in sips with all the flavors working at high intensity.

A bright style, with ginger, singed orange peel, pecan, flan and persimmon flavors that are slightly higher pitched than most tawnies. Ends with fresh cut and focused drive. Drink now. 5,900 cases made, 2,700 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

An elegant tawny, perfumed with soft tannins and a good edge of wood acidity and spirit. The wine is dry, densely flavored, tasting mature, showing a good balance between young sweetness and age, with everything well integrated.
RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Dec 2018
The NV 20 Years Old Tawny Porto is a typical Douro blend sourced from juice ranging from 15 to 30 years old. It was bottled in September 2018 with a Vinolok cork and 115 grams per liter of residual sugar. This adds a little power and notable complexity to the 10 Year this issue, but it seems a little understated in concentration and surprisingly mature. The brandy is a bit prominent, but that improves. Its bright and gentle demeanor won’t leave you with a “wow” impression, but it sneaks up on you and it’s easy to like eventually. It showed better a few days later, at which point it was notably improved. Maybe some bottle shock plus travel shock before it was tasted rendered it a little closed at first. It finishes with classic flavors laced with caramel nuances. There were 60,000 bottles produced.
WS8888 pts. - Wine & Spirits - April 1, 2006
Flavors of salted caramel and orange peel give this tawny complexity. It’s warm with more citrus fruit coming up in the end. For fresh roasted almonds.

This has a fine bite, offering its richness on the edge of a knife. Wood and fruit tannins are very evident, giving the concentration a dry, fresh core, over which dried fruit flavors pass. It has some age to it, as if there are older wines in the blend.
WS8888 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2018
Notes of raspberry liqueur and coffee cake make this a dessert in a glass. Its bright caramel-apple flavors last on spicy warmth, referencing both the alcohol and the wood in which the wine aged. It’s balanced and would work as well with a savory caramelized-onion dish as it would with an unsweetened plum tart.

This starts with a complex aroma of salinity and spice, this it deepens, the flavors bringing meadow flowers to mind. Queen Anne’s lace and hemp. Lasting and refined, this is great for sipping at a tapas bar (if they’ll open a bottle as fresh as this one), delicate enough for a first course of fish.

WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/15/1999
Perhaps the major surprise is that one of the top wines is a single quinta Port from Sandeman, a house that, after a fairly lean period, is reaffirming its commitment to vintage Port. This is luscious, rich, almost creamy in texture, with piles of black fruit, lavender and spice.
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 29, 2000
Dark purple in color, with wonderful violet, berry and cherry aromas. Full-bodied, medium-sweet, with a solid core of fruit and tannins. Long finish. Subtle. Best Sandeman since the 1960s. Best after 2008.
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 2, 2017
Showing some maturity now, with rum raisin, toffee and buckwheat hints along the edges, while the core maintains a gentle feel of mulled plum and blackberry fruit. Reveals a touch of cinnamon on the soft-edged finish. Approachable now, in an elegant style.—1997 Vintage Port retrospective (January 2017). Drink now through 2026. 25,200 cases made. (James Molesworth)
ST8888 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - May/Jun 2000
Bright ruby. Fruity, ripe aromas of black cherry, blackberry and maple syrup. Not especially fleshy or sweet but juicy and intensely flavored, with notes of smoke, chocolate and orange peel. Finishes with lovely freshness and sneaky length. Shows modest structure for aging but this stylish wine offers considerable early appeal.
WS8888 pts. - Wine & Spirits - April 1, 2000
George Sandeman created Vau Vintage as a new idea for a secondary declaration. It is not tied directly to a quinta’s production, as is now required for single quinta wines. Instead, it is blended from the best lots available in that vintage, but made for earlier consumption than a classic, more weighty and structured vintage would be (one simply labeled “Sandeman”). This ’97 is simple and direct, its primary black fruit chewy and unevolved. The flavor continues in a straight line, lasting and balanced. Drinkable early as a young, fruity wine, this will probably be at its best when the fruit has evolved, around 2007 to 2012.
