Where It's From

Appellation / Douro

View more wines from Douro

Located in northwest Portugal, The Douro region follows the path of the Douro river. It's home to Portugal's most prized export, port wines, as well as a blossoming selection of world-class table wines. Typical red grapes used in Douro are Touriga Nacional (which produces tannic, dark red wines) and Tempranillo (under the name Tinta Roriz). The steep slopes of the Douro River Valley make it difficult to farm, but the resulting wines are worth all the effort.

Country / Portugal

View more wines from Portugal

Portugal is most famous (and justifiably so) for its Port wines, fortified wines that are typically sweet and often served with dessert. Port wines come in many styles such as Tawny, Late Bottled Vintage, etc, and are classified by how they were produced.

Besides Port, however, Portugal is also one of the fastest-rising wine countries in the world (as far as quality and production) when it comes to table wines. You'll find some unbelievable values in Portuguese table wines, with grapes like Touriga Nacional at the forefront.

Niepoort Vintage Port 2017 / 750 ml.

2017 / 750 ml.

Item #: 91569

RP99+99–100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 11th Jul 2019
The 2017 Vintage Port is a field blend from old vines (80 to 100 years old). It comes in with 89 grams per liter of residual sugar. This was set for bottling in two weeks, but it was the final blend. Even when open for a couple of days, this was still tight, muscular and concentrated, grabbing the palate and never letting go. On opening, it was fragrant and delicious, but even then, there was plenty of muscle and evident concentration. The concentration and power merely improved as it aired out — unlike a lot of 2016s (which year Niepoort did not declare).

Wow. Smoky and intense on the nose with dried fruits and slate undertones. Lots of wet earth too. Full body, sweet yet dry and tannic on the palate. Very powerful and focused. Racy and powerful. A fantastic center palate of fruit. A blend of touriga franca, tinto cao, tinta francisca, tinta amarela, sousao, tinta roriz and others. Drink in 2025 and onwards.
WE9696 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2019
This aromatic wine is beautifully balanced with big tannins as well as great acidity and black plum fruit flavors. It is in a dry style, as much about richness as sweetness, a fine harbinger for the future. Drink from 2028.
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2019
The 2017 Vintage Port was picked early to obtain optimal ripeness, commencing 24 August and finished 26 September. Yields are some 30% below the previous year. The fruit was foot-trodden in granite lagares and matured in large barrels in Vila Nova de Gaia. It has a refulgent purple colour. The nose is explosive, a heady cornucopia of blueberry, black cherries and crème de cassis, later just a touch of lavender. There is no holding back on these aromatics. The palate follows suit with sumptuous black fruit, quite tannic but simultaneously rounded and lavish/velvety in texture. Touches of fresh fig and raisin appear towards the finish. Drop dead gorgeous.

Niepoort Redoma Tinto 2018 / 750 ml.

2018 / 750 ml.

Item #: 96963

RP93+93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Jul 2021
The 2018 Redoma is a field blend of typical grapes (like Tinta Amarela, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Tinto Cão) aged for 22 months in used 1,000-liter Portuguese vats. It comes in at just 12.5% alcohol. My pick for the best of the upper-level 2018 reds this issue, and a relative bargain besides, this easily coats the palate. Then, it shows off its power. Like its upper-level 2018 siblings, the fruit profile is not terribly expressive just now, and this is going to need a couple of years of cellaring to show its best. The upside potential seems most likely to be realized here in the group, however. Time will ultimately give us that answer, so come back around 2026. This is another of Niepoort’s 2018s that you will want to buy only if you can cellar it, at least for a few years. It looks like a beauty in the making, but let’s be a little cautious considering how closed and tight it is. There were 31,000 bottles produced from old vines (70+ years).

Niepoort Vintage Porto 2019 / 750 ml.

2019 / 750 ml.

RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2021
The 2019 Vintage Port is a field blend from old vines (80 to 100 years old) aged for 21 months in large Portuguese oak vats. It comes in with 88 grams per liter of residual sugar and 19.3% alcohol. This was seen about three months after bottling. In its own notes, the winery says it emphasized balance and elegance, and that is certainly a fitting summary of this wine. Let’s not forget, though, the appealing aromatics laced with some eucalyptus and the grip on the finish. Plus, the texture is sensual and caressing on the palate. Then, the fruit adds waves of flavor. This finishes with some power and pop, making it a good candidate for the cellar. The tannins are not too hard, though, and they are nicely controlled. Its freshness will also serve it in good stead as it ages. If there’s a quibble, it most certainly is not the most concentrated Niepoort ever. Everything else is super, however. This should have good aging potential and the ability to improve more. It’s worth noting that on the first day tasted, this was good but not great. A couple of days later, it was far more impressive, still tight, precise and focused. This is not quite on the level of the 2017, which had better fruit in my view, but it is a good example of what the winery can do. There were 39,754 bottles produced, plus some half bottles and larger formats.

This was originally seen about three months after bottling. It has settled in a bit, but it still has a long life ahead. Fresh, as always, this also has a beautiful expression of fruit. It is delicious and ripe, with many more years ahead. It isn’t drinking too badly now, but of course it has not even begun to acquire complexity. This is a beauty, but its best years are ahead. Pretty, with a high-pitched set of violet, pine and mulberry aromas and flavors that are sleek and tightly coiled, while additional notes of licorice, damson plum coulis and loganberry preserves fill in. Long and very refined through the finish. A distinctive style. Best from 2035 through 2060. 3,200 cases made, 37 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2024
The 2021 Tinto Twisted is a red blend from the DOC Douro, with 25% aged for 14 months in used French oak. A purple-red-hued wine, it reveals aromas of blood and raspberry, accompanied by notes of ink and black fruit. Dry and juicy on the palate, this modern wine lingers on its fruit flavors. A solid red, fresh and balanced, with a zesty edge of milled pepper, graphite and tobacco accenting crushed and macerated black cherry fruit flavors. Lightly chewy, with a minerally finish. Pair this with burgers or ribs from the grill. Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Amarela. Drink now through 2027. 500 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)
