District / Napa Valley

View more wines from Napa Valley

Napa Valley is California's -- and America's -- most famous and celebrated wine district. Located north of San Francisco, Napa Valley is most famous for its world-class Cabernets and Chardonnays. The region's acclaim officially took off following a 1976 tasting in Paris when renowned judges chose a Napa Chardonnay and Cabernet over top French wines made from the same grapes.

Most wineries in the region produce either a Chardonnay or a Cabernet, and usually it's both. Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel are also grown with success in Napa Valley. You'll likely recognize the names of some of the viticultural areas within Napa Valley, including St. Helena, Stag's Leap and Carneros.

Region / California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Country / United States

View more wines from United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

A Craftsman-style cabernet—all joints and fine wood—this has sunbaked cherry and cassis flavors that last, simple, firm and clean.

This full-bodied, firmly tannic wine can be decanted and paired immediately with a grilled ribeye, or saved for future enjoyment when it should have gained more complexity. Hearty blackberry and black-cherry flavors are accented with wood char and black pepper. Best from 2025. (Jim Gordon)

RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2022
The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, made entirely with free-run juice, is blended with 23% Petit Verdot, 1% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc and was matured for 16 months in 50% new French oak. Deep ruby-purple, it offers savory aromas of black cherries, charcuterie, cedar, mushroom, tobacco, dried herbs and pencil shavings. The medium-bodied palate is chalky and fresh with savory fruits and a mineral-driven finish. (Erin Brooks)
RP92+92–94 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Mar 2022
The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is a barrel sample of free-run Cabernet Sauvignon (75%) and Petit Verdot (25%), matured for 16 months in 50% new oak. Still youthfully coiled, it hints at blueberry fruit with swirls of graphite, soy sauce and exotic spices. The medium-bodied palate is velvety in texture, savory in character and finishes with uplifting acidity. This is due to be bottled in May 2022. (Erin Brooks)

Thick, dense tannin and oak lead the way to a concentrated palate of dark-black fruit, tar and leather in this value-minded wine, which is blended with 6% Merlot. In time, it settles to reveal a softer, more balanced side, enjoyable and approachable in understated richness.
