Martini & Rossi Asti

NV / 750 ml.

Item #: 57125

WE8686 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/15/2006
Creamy froth is short-lived but the peach and mineral notes come through clean and sharp followed by zest and soothing swetness in the mouth. One of Italy’s most recognized brands presents its most famous sweet sparkler; that’s always a joy to revisit.

Vietti Barolo Riserva Villero

2006 / 1.5 L.

Item #: 79227

RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 27th Jun 2013
The last wine of the flight is the outstanding 2006 Barolo Riserva Villero. It literally bursts open to full force intensity and beauty. It’s a mind-blowing interpretation of the often austere and brooding Nebbiolo grape that shows abundant life and vigor. Dark leather, cured beef, pressed rose petal, candied fruit, prune, cola, dried herbs and crushed mineral emerge from the glass like an aromatic marching band. Anticipated maturity: 2016–2035.
SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 28, 2014
Though on the linear side, this Barolo is full of sweet cherry, licorice, leather, savory herb and tobacco aromas and flavors. Dense and taut, showing a granular feel to the well-integrated tannins. This remains fresh and focused on the long, savory- and mineral-tinged finish. Best from 2016 through 2035. 327 cases made.

Gaja Sorì Tildin

2010 / 750 ml.

Item #: 79727

RP96+96+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 27th Jun 2013
Gaia Gaja uses the word “salty” to describe this next wine, and I see her point. The 2010 Sori Tildin shows a dry, firmly structured quality that enhances those extraordinary, breezy overtones of lead pencil and brimstone that so fittingly frame the Nebbiolo grape. The lingering end-notes of rose petal, ginger and cedar are striking. You immediately feel the tannic structure and power of the wine. The jump is very sharp next to the Costa Russi, and that’s why this is one of Gaja’s best cellar-agers. Anticipated maturity: 2018–2040.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 28, 2014
Displaying plenty of cherry, raspberry and floral notes, this is well-structured and balanced, with hints of sweet spices gracing the finish. Very expressive now, showing the potential to age. Juicy and long. Best from 2016 through 2029. 500 cases made.

Gaja Costa Russi

2013 / 750 ml.

Item #: 84489

VN9898 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2016
The 2013 Barbaresco Costa Russi is a real head-turner. Crystalline and utterly vivid in its expression of Nebbiolo, the 2013 is all class. Stylistically, the Costa Russi is closest to the straight Barbaresco, but it has a little more mid-palate sweetness and density. Bright floral and minty notes add lift on the chiseled, expressive finish. The Costa Russi is the star of the show this year, considering it is the least pedigreed of Gaja’s three single-vineyard sites. The 2013 has been stunningly beautiful on the three occasions I have tasted it so far.
JS9898 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, November 9, 2016
Medium ruby color. The class, strength and finesse to this wine are ever present with berry, dark-chocolate and walnut character. Full-bodied, dense and chewy. Very fresh. Chocolate, mango and ripe-strawberry flavors herald a bright finish. Needs four or five years to soften. Classic tannins. Better in 2021.
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Jun 2016
The 2013 Barbaresco Costa Russi is a celebration of vineyard site. In the past, this wine was blended with 5% Barbera, but this is no longer the case starting now. For the first time in recent memory, we are tasting a pure expression of Nebbiolo as harvested from the rows of vines in the Costa Russi cru, located directly below Sorì Tildìn at the base of the Barbaresco village. The vines are over 65-years-old and are planted in limestone clay and marl soils. Costa Russi is known for delicate, light-bodied wines that exhibit floral aromas of rose hip and lavender, as well as darker fruit tones at the back. Those qualities are beautifully evident in this vintage. The mouthfeel is characterized by a firm sense of tannic structure that is common to all of Gaja’s new releases in the 2013 vintage.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2017
Though rich in texture, this red is vibrant and bordering on racy, with cherry, strawberry, iron, spice and floral flavors that are persistent and focused. Excellent length on the resonant finish, where fruit and spice notes reign. Best from 2020 through 2036. 155 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Gaja Sorì San Lorenzo

2013 / 750 ml.

Item #: 84490

JS100100 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, November 9, 2016
Majestic aromas of crushed berries, meat and orange peel. Full body, lots of powerful yet ripe tannins and exquisite fruit. Amazing depth and density. They said they macerated a little more than normal because the fruit was perfect. A classic nebbiolo that reminds me of the great 1996. About 30% less production. Don’t touch for five to 10 years. A celebratory wine for Gaja’s return to the Barbaresco appellation.
VN9898 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2016
Gaja’s Sorì San Lorenzo, arguably the most iconic of all the wines, is superb. The 2013 is dark, virile and imposing, with a more classically leaning expression of power than in the recent past, not to mention tons of raw intensity. A host of graphite, savory herb, menthol, licorice, lavender, smoke and dark-fleshed fruits meld into the huge, tannic finish. There is a touch of French oak, but the personality of this site marries very naturally with the cooperage.
RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Jun 2016
Congratulations to the Gaja family and their 2013 Barbaresco Sorì San Lorenzo. This is a sheer and powerful expression of Nebbiolo that boasts a very firm and precise textural quality. The wine is 100% Nebbiolo, as blended Barbera is no longer part of the Sorì San Lorenzo DNA. The tannins are sharply delineated with a crunchy snap that you feel on the palate. This should definitely serve to keep the wine firmly rooted and committed to a slow aging trajectory. That structural firmness is the defining characteristic of this wine, and that unique identity is even more evident now that this wine is officially classified as Barbaresco.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2017
Round and full of cherry, plum and mineral aromas and flavors matched to a dense, broad structure. Oak spice and tar elements enter the mix as this mouthwatering red winds down on the long, spicy aftertaste. Best from 2021 through 2038. 155 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

White and Red Wines From Piedmont

In Italy, Piedmont is famed for both red and white, though in the U.S. the reds are far more common.

Red Piedmont wine is comprised of either Barbera, Dolcetto or Nebbiolo, with sophisticated, complex wines from Barolo and Barbaresco (Nebbiolo) at the top end. The most famous white wines of Piedmont are the Moscatos and the sparkling Astis, but Arneis is becoming more popular as well.
