Shop for Beaujolais Wines

Red Beaujolais wine is comprised of the Gamay grape, which is similar to Pinot Noir, but with more fruit-forwardness and a bit more softness.

The most famous of these is the Beaujolais Nouveau wine which is released on the third Thursday of November every year. Everyday Beaujolais and Beaujolais Villages wines are light, vibrant and easy-to-drink, as well, while the higher-end Cru Beaujolais (from regions such as Julienes, Brouilly, Moulin a Vent or Fleurie, etc) exhibit greater complexity while maintaining a similar body and smooth texture.

Deep, bright rimmed ruby. Ripe red/blue fruits, violet and candied licorice on the deeply perfumed nose. In a plush, weighty style, showing good clarity to its bitter cherry, cassis and candied violet flavors. Turns sweeter on the youthfully tannic finish, which hangs on with strong, dark berry-dominated persistence.

Bright magenta. Musky, spice-accented red berries, fresh flowers and a hint of earthiness on the perfumed nose. Juicy and focused on the palate, offering bitter cherry and black raspberry flavors that slowly deepen and become sweeter on the back half. Dusty tannins build steadily through a long, chewy finish that leaves sweet dark berry and peppery spice notes behind.

Lurid violet color. Mineral-accented dark berry and cherry liqueur scents are complicated by hints of candied violet and licorice. Sweet, perfumed and expansive on the palate, offering intense boysenberry and cherry that tighten up slowly on the back half. Blends richness and energy smoothly and finishes very long and sappy, with velvet tannins coming in late.

Bursting with aromas of plums, cherries and strawberries, the 2019 Beaujolais-Villages (Maison Louis Jadot) is medium to full-bodied, juicy and succulent, with a fleshy core of fruit, ripe but racy acids and velvety tannins. A wine that will appeal to purists and novices alike, this is a quintessentially charming Beaujolais-Villages from what is shaping up to be a very fine vintage.

    RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Aug 2019
The Domaine de Colonat’s 2018 Morgon Les Charmes reveals a generous bouquet of cherries and raspberries, followed by a rich, layered palate that’s framed by an ample chassis of velvety tannins. It was entirely destemmed and raised in cement tanks.
    WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2020
Spice and bright fruits show well in this full, rich wine. Tannins give the wine a dry core that contrasts with the bold berry flavors. The wine will age well, so drink from 2021.

  12. Château de la Chaize Brouilly Cuvée Vieilles Vignes

    2012 / 750 ml. | Item#81890

    RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 25th Jun 2014
The 2012 Brouilly Cuvee Vieilles Vignes comes from 55- to 75-year-old vines and undergoes complete carbonic maceration, after which it spends 9 to 12 months in wooden cask. It has much more fruite on the nose compared to the regular cuvee: red currant coulis and raspberry leaf. The palate is sweet and quite dense on the entry, with notes of strawberry, sour cherry and lemon. This is very composed on the finish, long in the mouth and just a lovely Brouilly full of succulence and flavor. Drink now–2019.
    WS9090 pts. - Wine & Spirits - October 1, 2015
Selected from vines that are more than 50 years old, this wine ages in Burgundy barrels, where it has picked up some oak tannins to fill out its structure. Powerful and compressed into a dark, peppery mouthful of umami flavor, with the meatiness of beef, it’s built to cellar. Then serve with a steak smothered in mushrooms.
    SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2015
Smoke and bacon fat notes provide a rich base for the spiced mulberry, graphite, cured tobacco and licorice drop flavors in this light-bodied, chewy red. Offers a fresh, tangy finish. Drink now through 2017. 200 cases imported.

Guignier’s 2017 Beaujolais bursts with notes of smoky cherries and raspberries, followed by a medium-bodied, melting and mouthwateringly tangy palate. It’s a delicious wine that will shine in the near-term.

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#85714

    JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, February 18, 2019
This offers brambly strawberry aromas with a spicy edge, too. The palate has a succulent, juicy and long, concentrated feel. Excellent depth of structure and flavor. Drink or hold.
    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2019
Bright ruby. Vibrant, spice-tinged red/blue fruit and floral qualities on the deeply perfumed nose; a smoky mineral flourish adds urgency. Pliant, gently sweet black raspberry, mulberry and rose pastille flavors firm up slowly with aeration. Powerful yet lively in character, showing solid closing thrust, strong persistence and repeating mineral and floral notes.

  15. Domaine Chignard Juliénas Beauvernay

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#85713

    JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, February 18, 2019
A very fragrant and polished expression on the nose with a fresh, strawberry and boysenberry edge, as well as a floral layer that also sits fresh. The palate is long, dense and suavely structured. Impressive concentration here. Drink or hold.
    RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 22nd Sep 2018
The 2017 Juliénas Beauvernay is lovely, wafting from the glass with alluring aromas of ripe red cherries, sweet soil and spices. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied, juicy and open-knit, with tangy acids and a youthfully chewy finish. While this year’s Fleurie seems to have suffered in the challenging vintage, Juliénas fared better and Chignard’s example doesn’t disappoint.
