In Napa Valley, wine is king, especially bold reds based on the Cabernet grape. Though it's debatable what is the best winery in Napa, there are any number of older, traditional houses (Mondavi, Montelena, BV) in addition to some stellar boutique places (St Helena, T-Vine) and everything in between.

California wines in general tend to be powerful and fruit-forward, and nowhere is this more evident than in Napa where reds like Cab and Zin reign, muscular and spicy. But there is also a growing trend for producing elegant, more subtle wines, so there is always something for drinkers on both sides of the spectrum.

    2015 / 750 ml. | Item#91247

    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2017
Blended of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller portions of Petit Sirah, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the 2015 Tarot Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has a deep garnet-purple color and exuberant nose of warm plums, crushed cherries and crème de cassis with touches of Indian spices, fragrant earth and violets with a waft of lavender. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, it fills the palate with black berry and earthy layers, finishing with the lovely velvety texture paving the way.

The 2015 Tarot Cabernet Sauvignon offers more black cherry, spice and hints of toast, as well as medium to full-bodied richness and a tighter, more focused, concentrated style. It’s terrific now but should evolve gracefully.

  11. Charles Krug Family Reserve Generations

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#94523

    RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2018
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Proprietary Red Blend Family Reserve Generations is intensely scented of warm black and red currants, Black Forest cake and blueberry compote with nuances of chocolate mint, new leather, tilled soil and fallen leaves. Full-bodied with a taut frame of grainy tannins supporting the densely packed black fruit layers, it has a long lingering minty kick on the finish.
    SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2020
Features a solid range blackberry paste, fig and plum notes, with cassis bush, bittersweet cocoa and licorice root accents. The solidly grippy finish leaves a hefty impression, but this will have fans. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2021 through 2029. 2,400 cases made.

  13. Sullivan Rutherford Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#94977

    JD92+92+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - January 31, 2020
All three of the 2016s I was able to taste showed beautifully. Starting with the 2016 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, it’s a blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Petit Verdot, brought up in 50% new oak. This is classic Cabernet all the way and offers lots of cassis, green tobacco, cedar, and dark chocolate. These carry to a medium to full-bodied 2016 that has ripe, present tannins, good purity, and an old school, complex, textbook Cabernet character. Give it 3–4 years and enjoy over the following two decades.
