Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

A nice balance of savory and fruity character on the nose with ripe berries and dark plums, together with notes of dried flowers. Medium-bodied with fresh-plum flavors, light tannins and plum-skin acidity keeping it fresh and adding some drive. Drink now.

Dark and woodsy in character, the 2020 Lacrima di Morro d’Alba wafts up with a mix of crushed wild berries, smoky sage and a hint of animal musk. It’s soft-textured with a welcome contrast of tart blackberries, sour citrus and zesty acids. This leaves a staining of concentration while finishing with wild herbal tones and a hint of licorice. The NV Vino di Visciole is an unusual red dessert wine made partly from dried cherries. The best I can do to describe it is to draw a comparison with some of the sweeter Sagrantino passitos of Umbria. A long, polished finish rounds out this beautifully balanced wine. Cookies and jam tarts seem like natural choices for pairing. 500 ml.

Fresh black fruit on the nose and palate with hints of blueberries and minerals. Full-bodied, with a sturdy but well integrated tannin support. Long, spicy finish. Not complex, but all in balance. Drink or hold.

The 2018 Rosso Piceno Brecciarolo is dusty and perfumed, mixing blackberries with dried flowers and hints of animal musk. This is silky-smooth and luxurious in feel, casting a polished display of mocha-tinged fruits across the palate. There’s an unexpected weight here, kept in check by lifting acidity and a hint of sour citrus, which paves the path to a note of tart woodland berries toward the close. While a bit shorter than anticipated, the Brecciarolo finishes fresh and classically dry, leaving only hints of licorice and spice to linger. This blend of 70% Montepulciano and 30% Sangiovese has a sheen of oak that dominates to a certain degree, yet it’s implemented quite nicely. (Eric Guido)

A dark and richly flavored blend of montepulciano, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and syrah that offers, not surprisingly, a wide array of aromas and flavors, from creamy berries and cherries, through dark floral notes to a hint of mild black licorice. Medium-bodied with a compact palate of fruit, lightly chewy tannins and a finish that’s a dead ringer for blackcurrant ice cream. Fun, but a bit cloying for me. Others will love it. Drink now.
