Tor Napa Valley Torchiana Chardonnay 2010 / 750 ml.

Item#: 69363

ST9494 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - May/Jun 2012
Good bright yellow. Aromas of orchard fruits, lemon curd, minerals and smoky lees. Offers lovely fruit intensity in a cool style:  lemon zest, fresh peach, minerals and menthol. Nothing tropical about this California chardonnay. High-pitched, broad and quite dry, with a palate-dusting, extract-rich finish.
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 22nd Dec 2011
The 2010 Chardonnay Torchiana boasts tons of energy and sheer personality. Lime peel, white flowers, crushed rocks and spices are some of the notes that flow from this pure, vivid Chardonnay. This is pure class and elegance. Anticipated maturity: 2012–2018.
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2012
Intense and vibrant, with complex white peach, honeysuckle and nectarine flavors, framed by toasty, cedary oak that takes on a butterscotch edge. Slow to unfold. Needs time. Best from 2013 through 2021. 175 cases made.

Where It's From

District / Napa Valley

View more wines from Napa Valley

Napa Valley is California's -- and America's -- most famous and celebrated wine district. Located north of San Francisco, Napa Valley is most famous for its world-class Cabernets and Chardonnays. The region's acclaim officially took off following a 1976 tasting in Paris when renowned judges chose a Napa Chardonnay and Cabernet over top French wines made from the same grapes.

Most wineries in the region produce either a Chardonnay or a Cabernet, and usually it's both. Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel are also grown with success in Napa Valley. You'll likely recognize the names of some of the viticultural areas within Napa Valley, including St. Helena, Stag's Leap and Carneros.

Region / California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Country / United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Combines power and finesse, offering a firm, dense, chewy core of mocha-scented blackberry, cassis, crushed rock, loamy earth, cedar, cigar box and exotic spice, ending with firm, smoky tannins and a midpalate sweetness that adds a measure of intrigue and nuance. Drink now through 2030. 315 cases made.
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2014
The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Tierra Roja Vineyard comes from a 4-acre Oakville parcel situated below the Dalla Valle vineyards in the eastern Vaca foothills. It exhibits an opaque purple color along with a gorgeous nose of loamy soil minerality interwoven with blackberry and crème de cassis fruit. Full-bodied with terrific richness and opulence, this is a great example from the tenderloin sector of Napa Valley. It should drink well young, yet last for 20–25 years.
ST93+93–95 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - May/Jun 2014
Dark red-ruby. Wild, highly nuanced nose throws off scents of raspberry, musky black olive, wild herbs, iron and dusty stone, all lifted by a floral topnote. Very ripe, dense and sweet, offering terrific depth and thickness without any heaviness. The fruits run more to red than black, with brown spices providing another aromatic element in the mouth. Finishes very long and sweet, with superb ripe, broad tannins. Outstanding potential.
VN92+92–94 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2013
Beautifully expressive and layered, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Tierra Roja Vineyard is resonant and floral, with terrific density and power. This is another 2012 that remains primary and not fully expressive. Today, it is the wine’s silkiness that impresses above all else. It will be interesting to see where the 2012 goes over the coming year.

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Herb Lamb Vineyard comes from the lower hillsides of Howell Mountain. Tor Kenward uses the middle section of this vineyard that was earlier used by Ann Colgin for her Herb Lamb bottlings. This wine has always been noted by its blueberry component, touch of licorice and underbrush. This wine has all of that, medium to full body, beautiful acidity and loads of fruit. It is drinking well now and should continue to do so for 15–20 or more years.

RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 25th Sep 2018
This wine comes from a single three-acre Chardonnay vineyard introduced to Tor Kenward by Larry Hyde in 2008. It belonged to one of Larry Hyde’s oldest friends in the Napa Valley, Steve Beresini, and was planted three decades ago with cuttings Larry gave Steve. This is now referred to as “Hyde Selection Wente Clone.” Today it produces a minuscule crop, usually between one and two tons per acre, with clusters half the normal size. Primary coopers are Saury and three-year dry aged Francois Frères. The 2016 Chardonnay Beresini Vineyard Cuvee Torchiana has a total rock-star nose of tropical fruits, lemon pie, key lime, wet pebbles, lanolin, beeswax and orange blossom. The medium to full-bodied palate is lively, layered, fresh and youthfully subdued, finishing long. This needs time! 375 cases produced.

The 2015 Chardonnay Durell Vineyard offers subtle pineapple, peach, apricot and honeysuckle, but always seems to have more rocky, wet gravel minerality to it. It is full-bodied dense and rich and should drink nicely for 5–7 years.
JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, May 23, 2017
A white with layers of dried apple and pear character. Hints of almond. Straw. Full body, good acidity and a complex finish. Drink now.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2017
Smells like a fresh-peeled tangerine, with zesty, mouthwatering fruit and acidity. Gains depth and nuance without sacrificing intensity or focus, ending with a strong, persistent aftertaste. Drink now through 2021. 200 cases made.

RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 25th Sep 2018
Drive the Oakville Cross Road to the Silverado Trail, then look directly forward and up and you see Tierra Roja, a small four-acre jewel of a hillside vineyard. The vineyard is dotted with big rocks, and the soil is roja (very red). The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Hillside comes from the upper steep terraces of the vineyard, directly below Dalla Valle. It includes 5% Cabernet Franc from another of Oakville’s vineyards. Fermented in a single closed-top tank, this was allowed to stay on its skins for a little over 30 days. The wine continued to pick up sweetness and depth without adding on any drying tannin, so extended maceration was used. After fermentation this was lightly pressed to new Taransaud and Darnajou barrels. Deep garnet-purple colored, it gives profound crème de cassis, blueberry pie, mulberries, plums, chocolate box, menthol and licorice aromas with underbrush hints. The full-bodied palate is firm, vibrant and earthy with herbal accents, finishing long and earthy. 300 cases produced.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2018
Tor’s 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Hillside Tierra Roja Vineyard includes a dollop of 5% Cabernet Franc from To Kalon. A powerful, structured wine, the Oakville Hillside is going to need at least a few years to allow the tannins to soften. This is an especially tannic, imposing 2015 Cabernet. The 2015 spent 18 months in French oak, about 70% of it new.
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2018
A touch rustic and chewy while still maintaining an elegant profile, marked by charcoal, lead pencil, dried berry, sage and cedary oak notes. Should gain. Best from 2020 through 2030. 300 cases made.

RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Oct 2016
The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Tierra Roja came in out-of-bottle at the top of its range, which is always a good sign. This is a 4-acre vineyard on the red soil hillsides, just below Dalla Valle in the Oakville corridor. This is a sexy, beautiful, fragrant wine with plenty of scorched earth, blackcurrants and licorice, but copious quantities of blackberry and blackcurrant fruit. This is a beautiful wine to drink now and, like so many 2014s, over the next 20–25 years.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2017
Firm and concentrated, with chewy, extracted dark berry, cedar, licorice and gravelly earth flavors. Engagingly complex, ending with a medley of red and black licorice notes. Best from 2021 through 2033. 216 cases made.

WE9696 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 11/1/2023
This seductive wine rolls up all the velvety appeal of Oakville Cabernet in a bottle that’s comparatively affordable for what many consider Napa’s best AVA for Cab. Plump dark plums, black currants, dark chocolate and cinnamon come to mind while savoring this full-bodied but gentle wine. Tannins are profuse but silky, so the wine is enjoyable already. Best from 2025–2035. (Jim Gordon)
JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, December 5, 2023
A very firm and polished red with currants, chocolate and salted almonds. Terra-cotta. Medium body. Juicy and flavorful with extremely polished tannins. Very creamy textured. Give it two or three years to come around. Drink after 2025. (James Suckling)
JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/26/2023
Checking in as 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Petit Verdot, all from Oakville, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville sports a dense purple hue to go with straight-up textbook Oakville notes of darker fruits, iron, black olives, and tobacco, with just a kiss of background spring flowers. It’s medium to full-bodied, round, textured, beautifully balanced, and has tons of classic varietal character. It’s a brilliant value to enjoy any time over the coming 15 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Oct 2016
The 2015 Chardonnay Reserve Cuvee Susan, which is the best barrels, is only the second release of this wine. This is somewhat reminiscent of the Torchiana, perhaps slightly more smoked hazelnuts in it, but it exhibits great acidity, terrific fruit intensity and a long, full-bodied finish. It should drink well for 7–8 years.
JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, March 20, 2017
A fantastic chardonnay with subtle complexity that gives it a style and vibe of mineral, herb and stone character underneath the pear and apple fruit. Full yet reserved. Drink now.
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2017
A big, rich, extracted style that’s long on complexity and concentration, still showing a pithy, tannic texture and waves of white peach, nectarine, guava, fig and melon flavors. Drink now through 2021. 100 cases made
