This is a bold, rich style of shiraz that has a core of ripe plums and chocolate on the nose. The palate is smooth, fleshy and flavorsome and has plenty of dark plums and berries, served in approachable mode. Drink now. Screw cap.

Where It's From

Region / South Australia

View more wines from South Australia

South Australia has a warm climate with little precipitation during the growing season, making it difficult for winemakers to irrigate their vineyards. This means smaller yields for the farmers, but the stress on the vines from the shortages of water also results in a higher quality fruit. For that reason, many of Australia's best wines come from South Australia and it's best known district, Barossa Valley. You'll find lots of Shiraz in South Australia, naturally, but you'll also find some great Cabernets, Rieslings, and Chardonnays.

When casual wine drinkers think of Australian wine, they probably think of the critter-laden labels of Yellow Tail and The Little Penguin, among others. And while large wine companies dominate the Australian list, there are also a great number of smaller producers creating highly-rated, award-winning wines.

The majority of Australian wine is produced in South Australia, with most of that (those “critter wines”) carrying a South Eastern Australia appellation. Subregions such as Barossa Valley, Coonawarra and McLaren Vale are home to smaller producers and higher quality wines. Victoria and New South Wales are also significant regions, and wines from Western Australia are reaching America in increasing numbers.

Though Shiraz is the grape most associated with Australia, they’ve also had great success with Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Riesling and Grenache.

Bright blueberries and cassis with some crushed flowers. This is a floral and fragrant style with some savory wildness at the edge. The palate has a crunchy, juicy and approachable feel with bright, ripe red-fruit punch. Drink now. Screw cap.

Have patience with this small-batch Shiraz—it changes constantly in the glass. While it’s not quite as charming as this natural-leaning producer’s two Semillons, it does offer personality in the form of ground cornmeal, plum, currant and licorice notes, which become more floral and spicy as the wine sits in the glass. On the mouth, the acidity soars and the tight-grained powdery tannins rule. But there’s bountiful fresh fruit and spice flavors as well. (Christina Pickard)

Plenty of fresh mulberries, red plums and cherries here with cocoa powder and light, earthy notes, too. Plush, smoothly delivered red fruit on the palate with some gently spicy nuances and a succulent, bold finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

The near-textbook 2018 Basket Pressed Shiraz is a classic representation of McLaren Vale Shiraz. Scents of vanilla and menthol mingle easily with blueberries and black cherries on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is supple enough to offer present-day enjoyment, yet it’s framed by firm tannins sufficient to warrant cellaring of up to a decade, if desired. A historic estate, Kay Brothers continues to turn out traditional wines of excellent quality.

Fresh herbal and tobacco overtones mingle with plum and cherry flavors in this red, with plenty of spice and tobacco flavors lingering on the firm finish. Drink now. 4,721 cases made, 125 cases imported. (MaryAnn Worobiec)
