Where It's From

District / Napa Valley

View more wines from Napa Valley

Napa Valley is California's -- and America's -- most famous and celebrated wine district. Located north of San Francisco, Napa Valley is most famous for its world-class Cabernets and Chardonnays. The region's acclaim officially took off following a 1976 tasting in Paris when renowned judges chose a Napa Chardonnay and Cabernet over top French wines made from the same grapes.

Most wineries in the region produce either a Chardonnay or a Cabernet, and usually it's both. Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel are also grown with success in Napa Valley. You'll likely recognize the names of some of the viticultural areas within Napa Valley, including St. Helena, Stag's Leap and Carneros.

Region / California

View more wines from California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Country / United States

View more wines from United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Always a smoking value, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon comes from Sonoma and has a layered, ripe, forward, and undeniably delicious style as well as lots of darker berry fruits, notes of leather and ripe herbs, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It’s going to put a smile on your face any time over the coming decade. Bravo! (Jeb Dunnuck)

JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, December 5, 2021
Black fruit, cassis, dried herbs, cedar and dried spices on the nose. It’s full-bodied with firm tannins. Structured with a solid core of dark fruit on the center-palate and an intense finish. Drink from 2024. (James Suckling)
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2022
Delivers a big gush of plum sauce, blackberry preserves and melted black licorice, with a flicker of bramble tucked in to provide some energy. Lush and toasty through the finish, with the fruit holding the upper hand throughout. Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. Drink now through 2032. 450 cases made. (James Molesworth)
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022
Cedary, almost bourbon-like wood, blueberries, cherries and vanilla cream all appear on the nose of the 2019 G by Alex Guarachi, a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Malbec. Full-bodied, creamy and plush, it’s almost ridiculous how soft and pillowy the tannins are. Drink it over the next five to eight years. (Joe Czerwinski)
WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2022
This wine is a great value for the quality, a blend of 88% estate Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% estate Malbec from the producer’s high-elevation site. Aged two years in all French oak, it is smooth, supple and rich in mountain berry, with additions of toasted oak and tobacco. This wine is approachable in its youth. (Virginie Boone)
JD9090 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/10/2022
Including 10% Malbec, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon G By Alex Guarachi sports a dense ruby/plum color to go with a spicy, savory nose of ripe black cherries, plums, chocolate, and tobacco. With moderate acidity, full-bodied richness, and loads of texture, this hedonistic bomb of a wine should evolve for 8–10 years if properly stored. (Jeb Dunnuck)

This well-balanced and complex wine shows off Cabernet’s black cherries, mint and black olives on a smooth but lightly tannic texture. Handsome, subtle touches of balsam, vanilla and toast keep it interesting on the sip. (Jim Gordon)

Packs warmed cassis and plum reduction notes coated in melted black licorice. Gains good cut from a fresh tobacco edge, showing loamy drive through the finish. Solid. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2030. 11,462 cases made. (James Molesworth)
JD9191 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/16/2023
The 2019 Red Blend checks in as 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the balance Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, and roughly 10,000 cases were produced. It offers beautiful red and black fruits as well as some classic tobacco, sandalwood, and spicy nuances. Medium to full-bodied, round, and undeniably delicious, it’s ready to go and perfect for enjoying over the coming 7–8 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2023
Deep in fruit and dark spice flavors, this full-bodied and moderately tannic wine made with 74% Cabernet Sauvignon plus Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot shows good ripeness, a velvety texture and handsome oak notes of cocoa, nutmeg, coffee and vanilla from the aroma through the finish. Best now–2028. (Jim Gordon)

RP98+98+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2023
Sourced from specific blocks of estate-grown fruit, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select is another highly successful vintage. All Cabernet Sauvignon aged 32 months in 100% new French oak, it boasts intense aromas of pencil shavings, dark loam, cassis and plum on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, super-ripe, rich, dense and concentrated—a truly impressive California vin de garde. Tannic but ripe, it finishes long and firm on the finish, adding a hint of mocha. To be released in September 2023, it’s a strong showing and hopefully an indication that quality will remain high under the new ownership. (Joe Czerwinski)
JD98+98+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/16/2023
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select is another magical vintage for this cuvée. All Cabernet Sauvignon from hillside vineyards on the eastern side of Stags Leap, it offers a vivid purple hue as well as extraordinary notes of cassis, black raspberries, violets, camphor, and spring flowers, with perfectly integrated background oak. Full-bodied but not massive, it’s flawlessly balanced on the palate and has ultra-fine tannins, a seamless, elegant mouthfeel, and a great, great finish. It’s another 30- to 40-year wine from this incredible team that readers will absolutely love. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9898 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2023
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select is one of the most elegant wines I have tasted at Shafer. Effusive aromatics and silky tannins are immediately captivating. Crushed red/purplish berry fruit, mint, spice, lavender and licorice are all finely knit. We will see, but the 2019 may very well represent a new direction for Hillside Select, one of Napa Valley’s most iconic Cabernets. (Antonio Galloni)
WE9797 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2023
This broad, rich and mouthfilling wine is Shafer’s most elite and collectible. Aged for 32 months in all-new French oak barrels, it boasts extra-ripe blackberries and blueberries, accents of mint, cedar and graphite, and a big structure of polished tannins. Tempting to drink soon for its indulgent flavors, the wine should be best from 2027–2037. (Jim Gordon)
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2023
A ripe, exuberant style, with generous plum cake, blackberry compote and açaí berry notes mixed with melted black licorice and a nicely polished, singed mesquite-accented finish. Hard to resist now (if you like the power style), but also has the energy to take some cellaring. Drink now through 2039. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 2,400 cases made. (James Molesworth)

VN9898 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2023
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignor Howell Mountain is outrageously beautiful. A wine of extraordinary purity, the 2019 dazzles right out of the gate. The tannins are nearly silky for a young Howell Mountain Cabernet. Red/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, rose petal and pomegranate all build in this sumptuous, explosive Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2019 is one of the most elegant Cabernets I have tasted here, and that is saying something. What a wine! (Antonio Galloni)
SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2023
Lushly fruited, this sends waves of crushed plum, boysenberry compote and blackberry paste out from the core, with a strong undercurrent of cast iron and smoldering tobacco to boot. Grippy and dense, but with a sense of polish and a note of purity in the guise of a pretty violet echo. Best from 2025 through 2040. 3,750 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Sturdy and flavorful, a good structure supports ample black cherry and blackberry flavors in this moderately tannic and full- bodied wine. It tastes deep and ripe, with light oak spice accents.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is a rich, heady wine. Even though it was just bottled, the 2019 possesses remarkable textural intensity. A whole range of floral and savory notes open as this statuesque Cabernet shows off its personality. This is an especially rich, bombastic Cabernet from Ric Forman. That is especially evident when tasted next to the 2018. (Antonio Galloni)
JD9696 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2022
Similarly hued, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley offers a classic, old school Napa Cabernet nose of darker currants, green tobacco, spring flowers, camphor, and new leather. As with the 2018, it plays in a more medium to full-bodied, elegant style, has ripe yet certainly present tannins, and a great finish. The 2019 is more accessible and open than the 2018 and should continue drinking brilliantly for another two decades if stored correctly. (Jeb Dunnuck)
