Stags' Leap The Investor | Red Wine 2018 / 750 ml.

This is blowzy and rich, yet there are plenty of tannins to back it up, and they are dusty and firm at that. Full-bodied, but not heavy in any way. Layered and already delicious. A blend of merlot, petite sirah, cabernet sauvignon and malbec. Drink or hold.

From the Producer

Indicative of the winery’s ability to combine power with grace, the 2018 Investor is plush and inviting, with expressive notes of blackberry, black currant, macerated blueberries, and wild black plum alongside baking spice notes of vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove. Intriguing notes of black pepper, tobacco leaf, and floral violet are supported by more savory elements of fresh thyme, lavender, and sage. The soft, round mouthfeel is rich and generous with present tannins that warm and coat the palate, leading to an incredibly lengthy finish with ripe, mouthwatering acidity. Enjoyable now and can be cellared for 5–10 years. Pairs perfectly with a variety of foods as the ultimate crowd-pleaser.

Where It's From

District / Napa Valley

View more wines from Napa Valley

Napa Valley is California's -- and America's -- most famous and celebrated wine district. Located north of San Francisco, Napa Valley is most famous for its world-class Cabernets and Chardonnays. The region's acclaim officially took off following a 1976 tasting in Paris when renowned judges chose a Napa Chardonnay and Cabernet over top French wines made from the same grapes.

Most wineries in the region produce either a Chardonnay or a Cabernet, and usually it's both. Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel are also grown with success in Napa Valley. You'll likely recognize the names of some of the viticultural areas within Napa Valley, including St. Helena, Stag's Leap and Carneros.

Region / California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Country / United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

The violet, blackberry and black-olive aromas are abundant. Full-bodied and superb, with great character and powerful tannins. It’s a block of tannins with wonderful fruit. Only about 500 cases made. Unique merlot. Give it time to come together. Best after 2024.
RP9999 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jan 2021
Composed of 84.5% Merlot and 15.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 W.S. Keyes Merlot was aged for 22 months in oak, 79% new. Deep garnet-purple colored, it charges out of the gate with intoxicating scents of black cherry compote, plum preserves, baked raspberries and spice cake with hints of potpourri, star anise and garrigue. Medium to full-bodied, the taut, crunchy black and blue fruit layers are supported by tightly knit, very fine-grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with epic length and depth. The super ripe tannins and showy fruit mean it is approachable now, but I’d leave it a couple of years for the flavors to start to fan out. It should easily cellar for 20–25+ years. 476 cases were made. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)
JD9797 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/27/2021
Coming from a single vineyard on Howell Mountain, the 2018 Merlot W.S. Keyes is a blockbuster effort that offers an awesome bouquet of blackcurrants, mulled black cherries, tobacco, graphite, scorched earth, blood orange, and violets. One of the finest examples of the variety in the vintage, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, layered mid-palate, silky tannins, and a great finish. Reminding me of a great Pomerol with its incredible elegance paired with a building sense of power and depth, this is going to benefit from 5–7 years of bottle age (I’d happily drink a bottle today) and cruise in cold cellars for 20–25 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021
The 2018 W.S. Keyes Merlot is going to need a number of years to be at its best. A rush of dark red cherry fruit, cedar, spice, mint, leather, licorice, mocha, new French oak, iron and dried herbs all race out of the glass. Readers will have to be patient with the 2018, as it is still coming together in bottle. The Keyes Merlot is unctuous and rich, but the dominant personality of Howell Mountain simply will not be denied. (Antonio Galloni)

Verite La Muse 2018 / 750 ml.

2018 / 750 ml.

Item #: 96801

RP100100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Jul 2021
A blend of 90% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 4% Malbec, the 2018 La Muse was matured 16 months in 100% new French oak barrels. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the nose delivers a powerful perfume of cherry pie, blackberry preserves and baked plums, followed by suggestions of red roses, cast-iron pan, underbrush and unsmoked cigars, plus wafts of licorice and oolong tea. Medium to full-bodied, the black fruit and exotic spice layers flow so gracefully over the palate, textured by plush tannins and lifted with seamless freshness, finishing epically long and achingly fragrant. The intensity and complexity of aromas and flavors — all waltzing in captivating harmony—cannot fail to make your head spin in the best possible way. Electrifying!
JD9999 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/22/2021
Checking in as 90% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Malbec that was raised in new French oak, the 2018 La Muse reveals a dense purple hue to go with plenty of black cherry and currant fruits as well as cedar pencil, graphite, dark chocolate, and smoked tobacco. Ripe, full-bodied, and brilliantly balanced on the palate, with both elegance and incredible opulence, it’s a hypothetical mix of Châteaux Canon and Lafite. This masterpiece of a Merlot can be drunk any time over the coming 20–30 years. Give bottles an hour in a decanter if drinking any time soon. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JS9898 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, August 2, 2021
One of the most refined and tight Muses with blackberries, milk chocolate, pine needles and hints of dried herbs. Full-bodied, yet so in check with a great finish. It’s seamless and goes on and one. Intellectual, compared to past vintages. 90% merlot with some malbec and cabernet franc. Try after 2026, but attractive now.

Aromas of baked blueberry, dried cherry, spice box and praline. It’s full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins. Rich and flavorful with a medium finish. Tight now. Try from 2023. (James Suckling)
RP8888 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020
A blend of 87% Merlot and 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Merlot was aged for 19 months in French and Hungarian oak with 30% of the French oak being new. The fruit was sourced from Calistoga and Oak Knoll. Deep garnet-purple colored, it rolls out of the glass with ready-for-business scents of preserved plums, baked blackberries and stewed cherries plus touches of garrigue, spice cake and bay leaves. The medium to full-bodied palate is chock-full of juicy fruit with tons of freshness and a chewy texture, finishing with an herbal lift. 2,170 cases were made. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)

Lovely aromas of toasted herbs, baked plums, nutmeg and chicory root. Full-bodied with tight tannins. Juicy and succulent red and black fruit on the palate, accented by notes of hot paprika, rosemary and allspice. Complex, but remains approachable. 86% petite sirah, 6% syrah, 5% grenache and 3% mixed Rhone varieties. Best after 2025. (James Suckling)
JD92+92+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/16/2023
Lots of ripe blue fruits, violets, flowers, and mineral-laced nuances all emerge from the 2019 Petite Sirah, a medium to full-bodied, inky, yet surprisingly vibrant and lively wine. It has fine tannins, and I love its overall balance. It’s going to have 10–15 years of longevity if well stored. (Jeb Dunnuck)

White peach, flint, and primary character. White blossom. Medium body. Medium phenolic texture and energetic acidity. Light lemon bitterness. Steely. Serious and solid. Drink or hold.

Fresh pear and lemon zest aromas lead to a silky texture laced with Bartlett pears, white peaches and hint of lemon. A medium body and rather light mouth-feel keep the wine charming and refreshing. (Jim Gordon)

The 2019 Merlot offers up scents of cherry tomato and Bing cherries on the nose, while it comes across as rather tart and tannic on the medium to full-bodied palate. It’s far from being my favorite offering from this winery, but as a steakhouse red-wine option, it’ll do just fine. (Joe Czerwinski)

Red blends of this type rarely shine as brightly. This ultra concentrated and smooth-textured blend including Merlot, Petite Sirah and Malbec is inky dark in color, luxurious aromatic of blueberries, blackcurrants and mint followed by oak spices and dark chocolate on the palate. Creamy in texture, it is laden in massive but melted tannins. Best from 2026–2036. (Jim Gordon)

An open and delicious red with red fruit, plum and walnut aromas and flavors. Sage and thyme. Full-bodied with chewy tannins, yet it’s juicy and delicious. Dark chocolate at the end. Drink now. (James Suckling)
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 4th May 2023
A wine that captures both sides of the Stags’ Leap Winery legacy, the 2020 The Investor Red Wine is a blend of Bordeaux varieties (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec aged in French oak, 35% new) and Petite Sirah (aged in American oak, 24% new). Framed by vanilla and cedar, the nose imparts notions of black cherries and blueberries. I didn’t find any herbaceous notes here, but there’s plenty of richness and concentration in this medium to full-bodied effort that finishes velvety and long. (Joe Czerwinski)
