St. Francis Sonoma County Chardonnay 2022 / 750 ml.

Item#: 75167

JD8888 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 6/27/2024
Bright straw/silver-hued, the 2022 Chardonnay Sonoma County saw six months in 20% new French oak and is lifted in the glass with aromas of melon, white peach, citrus blossoms, and delicate baking spices. Medium-bodied and floral through the finish, it’s elegant and has a delicate, supple texture as well as a clean feel. It’s a very charming wine to enjoy over the near term and also an outstanding value. (Audrey Frick)

Where It's From

District / Sonoma County

View more wines from Sonoma County

Sonoma County, just north of San Francisco is one of California's most famous wine districts. While sometimes overshadowed by the reputation of its rival and neighbor, Napa Valley, Sonoma County has a longer history of viticulture and is twice the size of the former.

Thanks in part to a strong diversity of climates within Sonoma County, the district is home to outstanding examples from a whole host of grapes. Sonoma County Pinot Noirs are considered some of the finest in the state, and the Dry Creek Valley Zinfandels are remarkable. Chardonnays come in a variety of styles thanks to the varying temperatures in Sonoma County, and Cabernets and Merlots also thrive here.

Some of the more celebrated viticultural areas in Sonoma County include Sonoma Mountain, Sonoma Coast, Chalk Hill, Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Carneros (parts of which fall within Napa Valley).

Region / California

View more wines from California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Country / United States

View more wines from United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Dense, ripe fruit flavors pack a big punch in this full-bodied, generous and complex wine. Toasted oak meets vivid lemon, pear and apple notes braced by tangy acidity that keeps it refreshing. Great both before and with dinner. (Jim Gordon)

This wine is rich, opulent with aromas of ripe green apple, peach, mulled spice, toasty vanilla cream and orange zest on the nose. The flavors on the palate are yellow apple, allspice and white grapefruit that transform into orange sherbet, mineral and a long, silky finish. Pair with weekday meals. (Tonya Pitts)

The 2022 Chardonnay SLO Coast is laced with hints of citrus confit, tangerine peel, mint, chamomile and lightly honeyed notes. This layered, expressive Chardonnay has so much to offer. The 2022 will spend 10–11 months in barrel. It is highly promising, even in this embryonic state. (Antonio Galloni)

Expansive, broad and aromatic, the notes of toasted fennel, lemon thyme, litsea oil and vetiver leap out of the glass, giving way to opulent flavors of grilled peach, caramelized pineapple and spiced, baked apples. Shows power and elegance, with crisp acidity pushing the flavors into clarity and helping them linger on the fresh finish. Drink now through 2037. 2,990 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)

A plummy richness is backed by some raspberry snap in this full-bodied, focused and flavorful wine. Vivid black cherries, cloves and a touch of toasted oak give the wine plenty to savor. Best from 2025. (Jim Gordon)

This sports strong singed savory notes out front, with a mix of steeped red and black currant fruit chasing them from behind. Bramble and anise elements score the finish, which shows a slightly rambunctious edge. Needs to settle in with some cellaring. Best from 2020 through 2025. 1,250 cases made. (James Molesworth)

An opaque red/black color, the 2021 Merlot Sonoma Valley Reserve leads with notes of dark earth, black plum, cocoa, and espresso. Full-bodied, it coats the palate and retains a delicate freshness on the finish, with hints of red apple and plush tannins. It’s an approachable wine now but can be enjoyed over the next 6–8 years. 960 cases were produced. (Audrey Frick)

JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/21/2023
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve takes on a more luxurious sheen and is forward with toasted bourbon spice, cedar, menthol, and cassis. Full-bodied, with ripeness throughout, notes of juicy blackberry, turned earth, and mocha fill the palate. It’s a bolder, more toasty style to drink over the next 4–6 years. (Audrey Frick)
WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2023
Ultraripe but still nice and dry, this gentle giant feels soft and velvety while cradling late-picked plums, blackberries and oak spices in soft tannins. Best now–2028. (Jim Gordon)
SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 22, 2022
Overtly toasted, though this has a good core of plum and blackberry puree behind that, with violet and anise notes trying to peak through on the graphite-edged finish. For fans of the style. Drink now through 2025. 1,940 cases made. (James Molesworth)
