Region / Tuscany

View more wines from Tuscany

There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.

Country / Italy

View more wines from Italy

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

Expressive and sumptuous from the get-go, this red features cherry, strawberry, rose, orange peel, mineral and Tuscan herb aromas and flavors. Sangiovese. Best from 2025 through 2045. 4,800 cases made, 800 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2023
Supple and smooth, the 2020 Cepparello brings Sangiovese to soaring heights in a manner only Paolo De Marchi can manage. This is his second to last vintage before he would retire and sell this historic estate. The wine opens to medium to full-bodied concentration with dark plum and redcurrant. Those cede to sweet spice, earth, crushed stone, rusty nail and candied orange peel. Give the wine more time to flesh out with cellar age. It registers a powerful 15% alcohol content. (Monica Larner)

WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2023
Cherries, strawberries and ripe tomatoes pop off the nose of this Chianti Classico standby from Antinori, with more classic notes of wild fennel, soil and balsamic vinegar arriving after a moment. The palate is fresh and bright with more cherries, joined with figs and plums, before hints of dark chocolate. Dusty tannins highlight earthy undertones for a savory contrast. (Danielle Callegari)
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 9th Feb 2023
This is a fun, easy-drinking red with a steady following. The Marchesi Antinori 2020 Chianti Classico Pèppoli marks the beginning of a new chapter for this popular bottle. Feeling that the wine had become too austere in recent years, the winemaking team opted for bigger oak barrels for less invasive oak. Fruit is selected from across various villages in the appellation. A tiny element of Merlot in this Sangiovese-based wine adds softness. These are logical choices that follow recent vintage trends, and here you get ripe cherry, crème de cassis and lightly toasted spice. It’s a classic package and a good value. (Monica Larner)
JD9090 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/28/2023
The 2020 Chianti Classico Peppoli has a lovely bouquet of sweet red and blue berries, purple flowers, and white pepper. This moves seamlessly to the palate, which has a medium frame, generous and rounded red raspberry fruit, fine tannins, and warming cedar. It is wonderfully approachable and refined now or drink 2023–2030. (Audrey Frick)
SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2022
A lithe, focused red, revealing cherry, strawberry and smoke flavors. This finishes on the crisp side, yet stays balanced. Sangiovese, Merlot and Syrah. Drink now. 18,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

A bright and fruity red with currant and berry character. Light vanilla. Medium body. Crisp finish. Sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon, and merlot. Drink now. (James Suckling)
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2023
Bright and fruity, displaying black cherry, blackberry, floral and earth flavors. Balanced and ready to enjoy, this shows echoes of fruit on the moderately long finish. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. Drink now through 2026. 80,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2023
The nose balances rich fruit and stony minerality, with a flash of raw meat lending additional depth. That sanguinity swells on the palate, but plum skin and sour cherries push back. The tannins and acidity are both composed and serene. (Danielle Callegari)
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2023
The 2020 Villa Artinori is packed with succulent dark cherry, plum, mocha, licorice and spice. As always, the Villa Antinori is a rich, boisterous wire, but in 2020 it is less forthcoming than it can be. There’s a bit more Sangiovese in this year’s blend, which explains its overall profile. The 2020 Chianti Classico is a dark, voluptuous red. Black cherry, plum, licorice and spice are all amplified in this potent, racy wine. Readers will find a super-classic Panzano Chiarti Classico built on texture and volume. Expressive floral and spice notes resonate on the rich, potent finish. A dollop of 10% Merlot works well in exalting richness. This is beautifully done. (Antonio Galloni)
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Aug 31, 2024
Black cherry, black currant, violet and earth aromas and flavors mark this velvety red, which is harmonious, yet still boasts a line of dusty tannins and a compact finish. Sangiovese and Merlot. Drink now through 2033. 2,250 cases made, 1,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Notes of red fruit, fine herbs and sweet spices on the nose. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and fresh acidity. Fruity, with a juicy edge and a lively finish. Tight at the end. 100% sangiovese. Drink or hold.

An elegant and enticing red, this features cherry, strawberry and floral aromas and flavors accented by earth and rhubarb. Firm and lightly astringent on the finish—but food will resolve that. Best from 2023 through 2028. 35,000 cases made, 5,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

The 2020 Chianti offers up crushed red/purplish berry fruit, spice, mint and dried flowers. Soft and fruity, it offers good purity, but also comes across as a bit light. In 2020, the Mori Chianti is attractive, but not quite the overachiever it can be. (Antonio Galloni)

Aromas of crushed stones, dark berries and blueberries follow through to a medium to full body with creamy tannins and a medium-chewy finish. Chocolate at the end. Sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon and merlot. Two or three years of bottle age will bring this around nicely. Drink after 2024. (James Suckling)
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 9th Feb 2023
A blend of 44% Sangiovese, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot, the 2019 Modus is a very contemporary wine with soft extraction, lots of dark fruit and gentle tannins spread over a full-bodied style. You get sunshine and warm Tuscany in the glass, and although this blend of grapes tells you less about its territory, it gives you a generous glass to pair with grilled meats. Black cherry is followed by pencil shaving, sweet earth and barbecue spice. Only the 15% alcohol content is a little too much. (Monica Larner)

RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 1st Apr 2004
The most important wine in the line is the 2000 Romitorio, made at the firm’s Santedame estate in Chianti Classico and an innovative blend of Sangiovese and Colorino. The latter grape, which resembles Petit Verdot in its richness in coloring material and tannins, works very well with Sangiovese, giving a very dark and deep colored wine, potent and alcoholic on the nose with notes of roasted fruit, ink, minerals, and scorched tar and intense, powerful flavors. It is slightly tannic at the moment but packed and layered, sweet in its fruit, mouth-filling and solid in its texture. Drink: 2006–2018.
