District / Napa Valley

View more wines from Napa Valley

Napa Valley is California's -- and America's -- most famous and celebrated wine district. Located north of San Francisco, Napa Valley is most famous for its world-class Cabernets and Chardonnays. The region's acclaim officially took off following a 1976 tasting in Paris when renowned judges chose a Napa Chardonnay and Cabernet over top French wines made from the same grapes.

Most wineries in the region produce either a Chardonnay or a Cabernet, and usually it's both. Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel are also grown with success in Napa Valley. You'll likely recognize the names of some of the viticultural areas within Napa Valley, including St. Helena, Stag's Leap and Carneros.

Region / California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Country / United States

View more wines from United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

RP91+91+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 22nd Dec 2010
The 2008 Petite Sirah has a wickedly opaque blue/purple color and a tight but promising nose of acacia flowers, blueberries and blackberries. In the mouth, it is still grapey, tasting more like a barrel sample than a finished wine. It shows surprisingly sweet tannins for a Petite Sirah but is actually very civilized. This wine should become more drinkable in 5 years and last for 20 or more.

Beautiful cassis, graphite, dark chocolate, and floral hints emerge from the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, which is medium to full-bodied and has great tannins as well as a balanced, classical style. A terrific 2017 that shines on all accounts, it should keep for 10–15 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2016
Happily, things picked up with his 2014 The Griffin, a proprietary blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Petit Verdot, Syrah and Charbono. Aged 18 months in French oak (both new and neutral), this is a big cuvée at a good price for an almost Mediterranean-styled wine with loads of meat, lavender, pepper, spice box, and excellent, ripe black and red currant fruit. It is medium-bodied, silky textured, and best drunk over the next 5–7 years.

JD9696 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/31/2020
The 2016 Claret checks in as 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot. Like the Merlot, it too is a mix of mountain and valley floor vineyards. Loads of ripe currants, violets, graphite, and chocolate emerge from the glass, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, ripe, velvety tannins, and a great finish. This ripe, sexy 2016 can be drunk today or cellared for 15–20 years, if you’re so inclined. There are only 612 cases. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022
Foley’s 2016 Claret is sourced from vineyards in the Calistoga, Howell Mountain and Mount Veeder AVAs, a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot, with about 30% new oak. Super ripe and concentrated, it delivers slow-moving swells of cassis and dark chocolate, being impressively full-bodied and almost fudge-like but lacking a bit of liveliness.
