Roagna Barbaresco Paje Vecchie Viti 2016 / 750 ml.

The 2016 Barbaresco Pajè Vecchie Viti is an exotic, totally beguiling wine laced with super-classic Nebbiolo notes of rose petal, orange peel, cinnamon and macerated cherry. Aromatic, sensual and constantly changing in the glass, the Pajè Vecchie Viti is everything Nebbiolo and Barbaresco are supposed to be. The complexity here is just unreal.

This red isn’t showy, but there is a depth to it, offering flavors that range from strawberry and cherry to wild herbs, hay, tobacco and iron. Lean and vigorous, with a firm grip of tannins on the finish. Best from 2025 through 2043. 260 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)

Located in northwestern Italy near the Italian Alps, Piedmont is home to two of Italy's more famous wines: Barolos and Barbarescos. Each of these wines are made with the Nebbiolo grape, which is the premier red grape in the region. Other red grapes of note used in Piedmont include Barbera and Dolcetto. Among white wine grapes used in Piedmont are Moscatos, which are increasing in popularity here in the US. Piedmont's capital city Torino is also home to large productions of Vermouth, also made from Moscato.

The 2016 Barolo Unoperuno explodes from the glass with striking aromatic intensity, inner perfume and brilliant fruit. The 2016 is a blend of co-fermented fruit from Arborina, Cerretta, Cannubi and Liste, bringing together elements of traditional and modern schools in a gorgeous Barolo that hits all the right notes. In a word: stunning!
RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020
The Elio Altare 2016 Barolo Unoperuno is a special wine with a high price tag that is explained by the manual labor required for its creation. “Uno per uno” means “one at a time” in Italian, and the fruit, the actual individual berries, are selected by hand during a super precise sorting operation. It represents a blend of Arborina in La Morra, Cannubi in Barolo, Pernanno in Castiglione Falletto, Sarmassa in Barolo and Cerretta in Serralunga d’Alba. This is a grounded and powerful wine (with a potent 15.5% alcohol content). It reveals cherry cough drop, blackberry preserves and candied orange peel. There is smoke and spice acquired during two years of oak aging. A precious few 1,200 bottles were produced, berry by berry.

A beam of pure cherry is matched by aromas and flavors of late summer fields, woodsy underbrush, licorice and tar. This is supple in texture and nicely supported by refined tannins and lively acidity. Best from 2022 through 2038. 100 cases made, 25 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Cigliuti’s 2016 Barbaresco Vie Erte is absolutely gorgeous. In 2016, the Vie Erte stands out for its distinctive spiced profile and that extra kick of mid-palate richness the wine has acquired now that the vines are nearly twenty years old. Vibrant and energetic, the 2016 has enough pedigree to age well for a number of years, although, quite frankly, it is very delicious right now. The sweet floral, minty and spiced notes that are so typical of this site really come to life with a bit of time in the glass. Although it was only bottled recently, the 2016 is quite expressive. Naturally, it will be even moreso in a few years’ time.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 29, 2020
A rose aroma introduces this elegant, fruity red, along with notes of underbrush and sun-kissed hay that offset the core of cherry flavors. Dense, assertive tannins shore up the finish and leave an astringent feel, yet there is plenty of fruit and length. Best from 2023 through 2045. 500 cases made, 175 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Tasted next to the Valferana, the 2016 Gattinara Vigna Molsino is much more nervous in feel. Iron, dried herbs, sweet dried cherry, mint, crushed rocks, white pepper and earthy notes give the Molsino a good deal of aromatic complexity to match its intense, saline-infused minerality. Today, though, the tannins and acids are almost overpowering. Readers will find an old-school, classically austere Gattinara that needs 10–15 years to be at its best. The 2016 is an absolute jewel of a wine, but it should be purchased only by readers with either very good genes are a ton of optimism regarding their own longevity.
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2021
This wine was not produced in 2017, so the next vintage in this mini vertical is the 2016 Gattinara Vigna Molsino. The name “Molsino” is a dialect derivative of the Italian word for “soft,” and it comes from the pretty contours of the hills that characterize the Gattinara landscape and the warm, lightly windy and sunny microclimate that this specific growing site enjoys. Indeed, the wine offers rich fruit flavors of wild berry and blackcurrant with solid structure and firmness. Pretty notes of pressed violet, earth and iron ore also appear. This Nebbiolo plays a hand similar to Barolo in terms of its inner power and its superior aging potential.

Azelia Barolo Margheria 2016 / 750 ml.

2016 / 750 ml.

Item #: 93104

VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020
The 2016 Barolo Margheria shows the natural weight and gravitas of Serralunga in its dark flavor profile and textural resonance. Black cherry, plum, lavender, spice, mint, chalk and bright saline notes are all laced throughout. Deceptive in its mid-weight structure, the 2016 possesses tremendous persistence and class to burn. Wilder suggestions of sage and lavender add savory top notes, while searing tannins punctuate the finish.
RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020
Here is a wonderfully executed Barolo to applaud. The Azelia 2016 Barolo Margheria offers that classic twofold punch of power and elegance that is so nicely highlighted in wines from Serralunga d’Alba. For sure, the textural fiber of this wine is richer, denser and tighter than the others, and there is an attractive point of inner black fruit energy and tension that I did not find to the same extent in the Cerretta. If that wine is more focused on the base tones, this wine hits those high tones with better precision. The Margheria vines are 60 years old on average and planted in clayey and calcareous soils that render minerality to the wine. Some 6,100 bottles were rolled out.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 15, 2020
This is elegant, with perfumed aromas of rose and strawberry joining flavors of tar and tobacco as this firms up. Linear, offering balance and a dusty, lingering finish. Best from 2022 through 2040. 510 cases made, 168 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

The 2016 Barolo Turnè offers an attractive combination of bold, rich and powerful sweet tobacco, cedar, dried herbs, menthol, licorice and spice all build in a beautifully layered, expressive Barolo loaded with dimension and complexity. The 2016 is a wonderfully deep and nuanced wine made very much in the mid-weight style of the year.

VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021
The 2016 Barbaresco Albesani is holding back so much right now. With a few hours of air, the Albesani starts to reveal the inner sweetness and perfume that are so typical of wines from this Neive vineyard. Sweet dried cherry, rose petal, kirsch, cinnamon, orange peel and sweet tobacco open with a bit of coaxing. Like all the 2016s, the Albesani is painfully tannic at this stage. It clearly has a lot to offer for those who can wait for the searing tannins to soften, even if just a bit.

Juniper, strawberry, cherry, hay and soy flavors abound in this dense, lively red, which tightens up, losing a little of its initial fluidity and leaving a long, if compact, finish. Best from 2024 through 2042. 90 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)

The 2016 Barolo del Comune di Barolo is an attractive, understated wine. Time in the glass brings out lovely inner sweetness and perfume. This is an especially ethereal style. Sweet dried cherry, crushed flowers, cedar and spice are nicely lifted. I would prefer to drink the 2016 over the next 10-15 years, as it does not appear to have the stuffing of the other wines in the range. The Comune bottling emerges from a parcel in the Terlo cru.

The 2017 Barbaresco Pajè offers up a compelling mélange of sweet red-toned fruit, cinnamon, blood orange, leather, cedar and tobacco. Deceptive in its mid-weight structure, the 2017 fleshes out nicely with a bit of time in the glass, showing its natural breadth and creaminess. Here, too, there is a good bit of immediacy and overall appeal. (Antonio Galloni)

Camphor, rose and woodland berry aromas shape the nose on this structured red. The firm, full-bodied palate delivers juicy cherry, crushed raspberry and licorice alongside tight, noble tannins and vibrant acidity. It has incredible structure and a compelling purity of fruit. Give it time to fully develop. Drink 2022–2034.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2019
The 2014 Barbaresco Albesani is frankly on another level relative to the other Barbarescos Luca Roagna has recently added to his range. Explosive in its aromatic intensity and ample on the palate, the Albesani will leave readers who enjoy classically built wines weak at the knees. Everything that makes Nebbiolo so alluring comes through in this stunning Barbaresco. Freshly cut flowers, mint, chalk and sweet red cherries all race through this delicious and very promising Barbaresco. This is just a great expression of Nebbiolo.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2020

Sleek and resonant, with mint and licorice aromas and flavors swirling around the raspberry, cherry and mineral notes in this generous red. The tannins are present yet refined, meshing well with the fruit and bright acidity and leaving a long, subtle aftertaste. Best from 2023 through 2045. 94 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)

The 2015 Barolo del Comune di Barolo is a gorgeous entry-level wine in this range. Succulent and forward, the 2015 offers quite a bit of immediacy and sheer appeal. Sweet red cherry fruit, spice, leather, mint, cedar and pipe tobacco are nicely pushed forward, but there is plenty of tannic spine underneath. This is an especially open-knit wine from Luca Roagna, not that I think most readers will have an issue with that, especially those of us who remember the bruisers of the past. The Barolo del Comune di Barolo is one of the wines in this range savvy readers will want to focus on for its quality, value and sheer deliciousness. Sadly, there are fewer than 100 cases to go around.

The 2015 Barbaresco Pajè Vecchie Viti is beautifully perfumed and lifted from the very first taste. There is an element of translucence to the 2015 that is utterly beguiling. Rose petal, mint, sweet red cherry, spice and new leather all grace this understated, alluring Barbaresco. All the elements fall into place effortlessly.
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021
The Roagna 2015 Barbaresco Pajè Vecchie Viti opens to a light garnet color and a deep glossy shine. Fruit from old vines manages to intercept that impossible meeting point between power and elegance. The 2012 Barbaresco Pajé Vecchie Viti is wonderfully complete. Dark, ample and full-bodied, yet also very much in the classic mold of all these wines, the 2012 has so much to say. Herb, tobacco, licorice, menthol and earthiness fill out the wines broad, muscular frame. I would prefer to cellar the 2012 for at least a handful of years.
