Critical Acclaim

RP92 Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate 23rd Jul 2020

"The 2017 Claret is a blend of 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 14% Malbec, 12% Petit Verdot, 8% Syrah and 2% Cabernet Franc. It opens with classic scents of chocolate-covered cherries, cedar, bay leaves and tobacco with a very classy frame of sweet spices. In the mouth, it’s medium-bodied and plushly fruited with a fine grain and great freshness, finishing long. 4,482 cases produced." (92 pts.)

JD89 Jeb Dunnuck May 21, 2020

"A blend of 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 14% Malbec, and the rest a mix of varieties, the 2017 Claret has a bright, edgy bouquet of blue fruits, graphite, toasted spice, and scorched earth. With lots of minerality, some vanilla oak, firm tannins, and medium to full body, it reminds me of a Cabernet from Ridge’s Monte Bello Vineyard. It shows the firmer, more linear style of the vintage, so give bottles a year or two and enjoy over the following 7–8 years or so." (89 pts.)

VN89 Vinous Apr 2020

"The 2017 Claret is a supple, fruity wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. Ripe red cherry, red plum, mocha and dried flowers give this juicy Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot-based blend a good deal of complexity. Floral overtones linger nicely on the finish." (89 pts.)

Napa Valley

Napa Valley is California's -- and America's -- most famous and celebrated wine district. Located north of San Francisco, Napa Valley is most famous for its world-class Cabernets and Chardonnays. The region's acclaim officially took off following a 1976 tasting in Paris when renowned judges chose a Napa Chardonnay and Cabernet over top French wines made from the same grapes.

Most wineries in the region produce either a Chardonnay or a Cabernet, and usually it's both. Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel are also grown with success in Napa Valley. You'll likely recognize the names of some of the viticultural areas within Napa Valley, including St. Helena, Stag's Leap and Carneros.

California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.
