Top-Rated Malbecs

Top-Rated Malbecs | WineDeals.com

It's easy to forget that Malbecs as we know them today didn't really come into style until the late 1990's. Since that time, though, they've won over a wide swath of casual wine drinkers and critics alike. Here are some top-rated Malbecs you ought to give a try.

Sweet spices, coffee and some pine cones to the fresh blackberries and cherries. Spicy on the medium-bodied palate with dissolved, chalky tannins and plenty of spiced cherries in the smooth, medium-long finish. Plush tannins here. Drink now. (Zekun Shuai)

The range of appellation wines from 2021 is very fresh and balanced, clean and precise, as can be seen in the juicy but serious 2021 Appellation La Consulta Malbec, which was produced with grapes from vines planted in 1996 on alluvial soils. This is still young and a little marked by the élevage in barrel, with spices and some creaminess, and it has the mineral sensation and fine tannins that this wine always has. It has black fruit and an earthy twist. 84,000 bottles produced. (Luis Gutiérrez)

Juicy and inviting, with heavy citrus nuances to the vibrant black cherry and berry flavors, revealing a trace of red licorice underneath and a light toasty brambly edge to the finish around fine tannins. Drink now through 2028. 7,000 cases made, 5,000 cases imported. (Aaron Romano)

Bright and racy red with black plums, cherries, fresh blackberries, violets and some dark spices. Medium-bodied and crunchy, imbued with juicy fruit and smooth tannins. Delicious food-wine, showing drinkability. Not quite complex, but you want to drink a whole glass. From organically grown grapes. Drink now. Screw cap. (James Suckling)

Dark and rich, this blend of malbec, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc packs in fruit and spice. It’s buoyant and lively, ripe yet cool, with an evergreen note perking up the black-raspberry fruit; black-pepper spice gives it extra lift and drive.

Ripe berry, cherry and plum aromas offer an enticing hint of sweet cookie dough. There’s nothing shy about the palate, which hammers at first before calming. Blackberry, savory notes and chocolaty oak flavors offset the wine’s natural piercing intensity. This structured blend is Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and a little bit of Cab Franc; drink through 2023.

Lunta Malbec

2022 / 750 ml.

JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, May 1, 2024
Ripe cassis, berries, plums and a subtle twist of spices. Nicely structured on the palate with a medium to full body and a tight, medium-long finish. Well-framed. Drinkable now, but better in one more year. (Zekun Shuai)

The nose of this wine is austere, but as the wine breathes, hints of black fruit show in the glass. A generous palate delivers intense flavors of blackberries joined by earthy notes that extend into the finish. (Jesica Vargas)
