  2. Castaño Alcaria

    Old Vines
    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#91013

    JD9191 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - February 21, 2018
A custom cuvée made for importer Eric Solomon with Jean-Marc Lafage, the 2016 Alcaria is a blend of 50% Monastrell, 25% Syrah, and the balance Garnacha, brought up in a mix of French and American oak barrels. An incredible value that more than over-delivers, this deeply colored red boasts terrific notes of ripe black fruits, chocolate, smoked herbs, and graphite. With full-boded richness and a sexy, opulent style on the palate, it opens up nicely in the glass and should keep for 2–4 years.
    SP8989 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2017
Floral and mineral notes frame juicy cherry and red plum flavors in this fresh red. Crisp acidity keeps the supple texture focused, while firm tannins give this some heft. Monastrell, Syrah and Garnacha Tintorera. Drink now through 2024. 6,000 cases imported.
    RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Dec 2017
One of the new custom cuvées for their U.S. importer Eric Solomon is the 2016 Alcaria, which is about to be launched. It’s a GSM-ish blend of 60% Monastrell with 25% Syrah and the remaining Garnacha Tintorera with a short time in French and American oak barriques. It’s a little reduced right now after bottling (most probably because of the Syrah), so you might need to give it an energetic decanting or some more time in bottle. The meat component in many wines in this region is part of the signature and the rustic elegance of these wines. There is no reduction in the palate, where the tannins are fine-grained and there’s good balance. 120,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2017.
    WE8989 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 6/1/2018
This blend of Monastrell, Syrah and Garnacha Tintorera feels lively, its dark plum and berry aromas laced with chocolate. Smacking tannins create a dry sensation, framing ripe black plum and prune flavors. Complex notes of spice and tomato emerge on the firm finish.

    2014 / 750 ml. | Item#89367

    JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, July 24, 2017
A big ripe wine with a touch of caramel alongside the big black plum note. A massively tannic but relatively plush wine that has a certain freshness. This ought to age well. Better from 2020.
    RP8787 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Feb 2017
There is a new red blend of Tempranillo with some 13% Cabernet Sauvignon called 2014 El Transformador, from grapes mostly from a plot that names the wine. The vines were planted in the 1970s on limestone soils. It fermented with indigenous yeasts after a cold soak with dry ice, followed by ten months in second and third year French oak barrels. It showed very high ripeness and some volatility that made it a little blurry. The palate showed similar flavors and some dusty tannins. 8,000 bottles produced.

    JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, August 2, 2018
Very ripe and slightly raw oak over black fruit and coconut candy. The palate has dense, chewy fruit and really assertive tannins. Needs a year or two to settle in.

  6. Evodia

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#89502

    RP90+90+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Apr 2020
The 2019 Evodia is pure Garnacha from old head-pruned vines in the Sierra Santa Cruz in Calatayud. It fermented with around 20% full clusters in concrete and matured mostly in concrete with just 20% of the blend put in used oak barrels for three months. There is a component that matured in concrete egg that I was able to taste separately that seems to bring a touch of freshness to the final blend, something welcomed in a warm year like 2019, which seems like a fresher version of 2017, when the wines achieved quite good ripeness. The nose opens up nicely in the glass and is quite aromatic and floral, exuberant, with a heady touch of ripe fruit. It’s young and tasty, tender and pleasant to drink, with a forward personality. A real bargain. I hope there are more wines like this in Aragon, where the wealth of Garnacha vineyards would make it possible quite easily. 150,000 bottles produced. There are two batches per year. What I tasted had been bottled in February 2020, just a few days before I sampled it.

Some wet-wool aromas with dried plums, too. The palate has a mellow array of red berries and smooth, easy tannins. Drink now.
    SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2020
This red has a juicy, tender texture, with gentle tannins and citrusy acidity. Cherry, candied berry and vanilla flavors mingle with herbal and forest floor notes. Harmonious, in the traditional style. Drink now through 2026. 500,000 cases made, 2,000 cases imported.

  12. Viña Zorzal Malayeto

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#89784

    RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Dec 2018
The single-vineyard Garnacha 2016 Malayeto comes from 2.39 hectares of vines averaging 35 years of age in the village of Fitero at 520 meters in altitude on limestone soils. It’s a bright ruby colored red, wine with tons of spices, herbs, flowers, notes of bay leaf, thyme and a bright personality. It has a light to medium-bodied palate with unnoticeable oak (it matured in well-seasoned, neutral oak foudres and barrels), with complex stone minerality, a dry and long finish. This is really delicious and a very good value, possibly the freshest of the six Garnachas I tasted from them. Some 12,000 bottles were filled in March 2018. This is a real bargain, one to buy by the case.

  13. Juan Gil Silver Label Monastrell

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#76209

    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 10th Sep 2020
The 2017 Juan Gil (silver label) was produce with Monastrell from old, dry-farmed vines on stony limestone soils. It fermented in open-top stainless steel tanks and aged in French oak barrels for 12 months. This is a textbook Mediterranean vintage with a varietal profile mixing aromatic herbs, berries and spices, with a smoky touch. It has notes of esparto grass and other aromatic herbs and ripe berries. It has fine-grained chalky tannins and a dry finish. Truly Mediterranean and a textbook Jumilla. 312,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2019.

  14. Descendientes de J. Palacios Pétalos

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#75383

    RP93+93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Jun 2020
Their regional wine achieves unheard of levels of complexity and nuance with the 2018 Pétalos del Bierzo. It’s a blend from over 90 hectares of vineyards in different part of Bierzo, 20% of the grapes from their own vineyards in Corullón, including some 4% white grapes. The rest is purchased from 180+ families with whom they have a long-term relationship. Some of these vineyards are not yet certified organic, but the objective is to achieve it in the next five years. It’s mostly Mencía, but there are other grapes varieties in the vineyards; they estimate about 3% of other reds, Alicante Bouschet, Gran Negro, Pan y Carne, Negreda, etc. and around 4% whites, Valenciana, Jerez and Godello, half from Corullón and the other half from other villages. The grapes were partly destemmed and fermented in open-top stainless steel and oak vats with 25 days of maceration where the wine underwent a slow three-month malolactic. It matured in barrel for 12 months. This is the wine that showcases the house style and the character of the vintage, which, in this case, is delicate and very much from the zone. There is an aromatic purity and elegance that is very captivating with a faint flinty background, the cherry essence (Mediterranean) and a touch of fern (Atlantic) plus a honeyed twist that shows up after a couple of hours in the glass. It has a silky texture, soft and caressing, with very fine tannins and the faint bitter twist in the finish. In an ideal world, this should be the first wine people drink from Bierzo, and fortunately, in many cases, it is, given the availability, even if they did a more severe selection. This is approachable now but would be better in one year, and it’s going to live in bottle. 282,038 bottles and 2,500 magnums produced. It was bottled between December 2019 and January 2020.

    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2020
This bold red features a thick, rich texture, with ripe, heady flavors of currant and blackberry preserves, backed by cocoa, espresso and loamy earth notes. Muscular tannins are well-integrated, with enough orange peel acidity to keep this lively. Harmonious, in a full-throttle style. Drink now through 2027. 10,000 cases made, 9,000 cases imported.
