Altos Las Hormigas Malbec Clásico

2020 / 750 ml.

Item #: 66915

RP90+90+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2022
The red 2020 Malbec Clásico was produced with 80% grapes from Luján de Cuyo and 20% grapes from Valle de Uco, mostly their own grapes, all in stainless steel and vinified by plot with their native yeasts. It matured in concrete for nine months. It’s ripe without excess and develops a full array of aromas and flavors but keeping 13.5% alcohol, very fresh for the warm year. It’s juicy, complex beyond fruit, a little herbal, medium-bodied and with very fine tannins. It’s clean, expressive and open, a wine that has to be approachable from when you pull the cork. They are working to increase the drinkability, which will be seen more and more in the following years. This represents the largest part of their production with some 500,000 bottles. There are different bottlings. (Luis Gutiérrez)
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2022
The 2020 Malbec Clásico is 75% from Luján de Cuyo and 25% from the Uco Valley. A mild purple hue. Considering the year, the nose presents notes of quite fresh plum with hints of herbs, syrup and floral aromas. In the mouth, it has good volume, firm, grippy tannins and an expansive flow before the ripe finish. (Joaquín Hidalgo)

Nice sour cherries with a streak of white pepper and violets. Medium-bodied, but fleshy. Ripe, almost creamy tannins extend to the finish, but are still juicy and vibrant. Not complex, but so balanced and easy to drink. Drink now.

Crios Malbec

2021 / 750 ml.

Item #: 70898

VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2022
The 2021 Malbec Crios from the Uco Valley was 40% aged in used barrels. Purple in hue. The nose offers notes of plum and violets, which come through very clearly for a wine in this price range, over a bed of vanilla. In the mouth, it’s juicy and expansive with a little grip and a flavorful, black tea profile. The 2021 is a textured Malbec with an expressive, fruity core. (Joaquín Hidalgo)

Shop for Malbec Wine

It's easy to see why Malbec has exploded in popularity recently. The Malbec grape displays lush fruit, bold spice, and a smooth mouth-feel, plus it's food-friendly (pair it with steaks and other red meats) and available at a wide range of prices from "everyday" to "cellar me."

The grape's traditional home has been western France, as one of six grapes permitted in Bordeaux, where it is blended with Cabernet and Merlot. Wine Master Jancis Robinson refers to French Malbec as a more "rustic" version of Merlot.

By and large, however, Malbec's new home is in Argentina, where it dominates viticulturally. Here, the Malbec grape is made into single varietal wines, as well as blended with its classic partners Cab and Merlot. The Argentine version tends to show more fruit and a more velvety texture than the French Malbec. Red Wine enthusiasts are taking notice!
