Critical Acclaim

VN91 Vinous Mar 2020

"A blend of 67% Cinsault with País from Huarilihue, Itata, fermented in open vats and aged in concrete. 13.5% alcohol with cherry and sour cherry aromas, diaphanous earth notes and a compact expression. Tantalizing in the mouth, it is neither elegant nor rustic, with active tannins and a light, transparent feel. A fruity wine." (91 pts.)

RP92 Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate 28th Feb 2020

"The 2018 Pencopolitano is a regional red blend of 67% Cinsault from Guarilihue and 33% País from Portezuelo from old vines (40 to 200 years old) on granite-based soils rich in lime, sand and quartz. It fermented with 30% full clusters and matured in 2,500-liter oak foudres, 5,000-liter oak vats and 3,000-liter concrete vats for 10 to 11 months. This is a wine with more structure and fruit, a round palate and a straightforward personality that is easier to understand. 14,698 bottles were filled in March 2019." (92 pts.)

With its stunning, snowy mountains and beautiful beaches, Chile would be captivating even if it wasn’t turning out some of the most interesting and accessible wines in the world. But large producers like Concha y Toro and Casa LaPostolle have put Chile on the wine map with their complex yet value-driven Merlots and Cabernets, and lately smaller regions like Maipo, Casablanca, and the Bio Bio Valley have become more widely available.

Now, Syrah, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc, and even that elusive beast of the wine world--affordable Pinot Noir—have joined the ranks of Chile’s most famous offerings. And don’t forget Chile’s signature grape, Carmenere--a peppery, purpley beast that goes wonderfully with grilled meat dishes. Best of all, Chile offers some of the best value in the world, with many outstanding wines selling for under $12.
