Wine Grapes

Primary Grape: Cabernet Sauvignon | All Grapes: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon

From the Producer

The legendary vineyard situated on the Oakville bench is farmed by both row and vine so we can endow the fullest expression of the site. Presenting an appearance of opaque purple color, enormous complexity and layered aromatics open with black raspberry, anise, and intonations of cigar leaf and savory tar. Wild blackberry and currant present a focused palate highlighted by mocha and dried thyme. The full-bodied texture and balanced acidity are surrounded by opulent and voluptuous tannins from start to finish making this a readily approachable wine that pleases the palate. Consider complementing with duck confit cassoulet, steak frites with béarnaise, or spicy mussel cioppino. Serve at 50°–55° F.

Critical Acclaim

JS96 JamesSuckling.com Wednesday, May 23, 2018

"Freshly picked blackberries, ivy, dark plums, licorice, citrus and orange rind. Full-bodied with lots of fruit but it’s very tangy and nicely blended in the vibrant acidity and structured yet soft tannins. Citrusy on the finish. Drink in 2020." (96 pts.)

VN93 Vinous Mar 2018

"The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard has come together nicely since I tasted it last year. The slightly raw edges that were present in barrel are now gone, and what emerges from the glass is Cabernet that is surprisingly sensual and delicate for this Oakville site. Sweet red cherry jam, floral and spice notes all develop with air, but it is the wine’s textural feel that is most distinctive in 2015." (93 pts.)

RP98 Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate 29th Dec 2017

"Deep purple-black in color, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard opens with seducing notes of crushed black currants, blueberry compote and dried mulberries with hints of spice cake, sandalwood, dried roses and star anise plus a touch of smoked meats. Full-bodied, rich, ripe and densely packed, the opulent fruit is superbly framed by velvety tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with lingering spice layers. 758 cases were made." (98 pts.)

SP92 Wine Spectator Oct 31, 2018

"Plump and juicy, this wine transcends fruit purity to reveal elements of finesse and nuance. The best times lie ahead. Best from 2020 through 2032. 758 cases made." (92 pts.)

Napa Valley

Napa Valley is California's -- and America's -- most famous and celebrated wine district. Located north of San Francisco, Napa Valley is most famous for its world-class Cabernets and Chardonnays. The region's acclaim officially took off following a 1976 tasting in Paris when renowned judges chose a Napa Chardonnay and Cabernet over top French wines made from the same grapes.

Most wineries in the region produce either a Chardonnay or a Cabernet, and usually it's both. Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel are also grown with success in Napa Valley. You'll likely recognize the names of some of the viticultural areas within Napa Valley, including St. Helena, Stag's Leap and Carneros.

California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.
