When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

RP95+95–97 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 8th Dec 2022
Still in barrel, the 2020 Syrah Patrina is youthfully lush and hedonistic, the nose loaded with wild berry jam scents and touches of iron, aniseed and orange peel. The stunning palate balances concentration and detail and is supported by powdery tannins and exuberant freshness, offering notable purity and length at this stage. “There was big-time sorting this vintage and a lot of selection before we even picked,” John Alban says. The 2020 Patrina is fairly representative of the final wine, having been assembled and racked once. It is due to be bottled in January of 2023 and released in the spring. (Erin Brooks)

Andremily Syrah No. 9 2020 / 750 ml.

2020 / 750 ml.

Item #: 1057

JD9999 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/30/2023
I loved the 2020 No 9 from barrel and this beauty does not disappoint from bottle. Based on 89% Syrah, 9% Mourvèdre, and the rest Viognier that was only 50% destemmed, it spent 22 months in 65% new French oak. A wine that demands lots of air to show at its best, it reveals a deep plum/purple hue as well as a brilliant bouquet of red, blue, and black fruits, ground pepper, iodine, crushed violets, and wild sagebrush. With incredible purity and precision aromatically, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, layered, concentrated mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It’s a big, rich wine from Binns, but if anything, it shows another level of finesse and stays light on its feet and graceful. This world-class Syrah will benefit from 3–5 years of bottle age and evolve nicely over the following two decades. It’s clearly one of the wines of the vintage in Santa Barbara, if not one of the greatest 2020s in the state. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP98+98+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 16th Nov 2023
The 2020 No. 9 is a blend of 89% Syrah, 9% Mourvèdre and 2% Viognier. Grapes come from Andremily’s new Slide Hill estate, plus White Hawk, Larner, Harrison-Clarke, Kimsey and Alta Mesa Vineyards in Santa Barbara County. It was vinified with 50% whole clusters and matured for around 22 months in 65% new French barriques. It’s powerful and ripe yet detailed, offering a soaring expression that begins with dark fruit and soft meaty tones and, with time, blossoms with nuances of coffee beans, garrigue, star anise, sagebrush and dark chocolate. The full-bodied palate explodes with layer after layer of spicy, über concentrated fruit. It has a support of powdery tannins and vibrant acidity that highlights flashes of floral perfume and spice, and it calls you back to the glass with its long, nuanced finish. It deserves plenty of time in bottle to unwind. 890 cases and a few magnums were made. (Erin Brooks)

VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
One of the highlights in this range, the 2020 Syrah (California) is bright, punchy and explosive. Inky dark fruit, spice, licorice and leather are all kicked up in this juicy, exuberant Syrah. In 2020, a large percentage of the fruit is from Santa Maria, hence the broader California designation this year. Floral and savory accents linger. The 2020 is flat-out delicious.

WE8888 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2022
This is a full-bodied wine with aromas and flavors to match. Plump black cherry and blackberry fruits burst forward, along with complementary notes of crushed violets and roses, fennel, rosemary, sage, cumin, clove and freshly farmed earth. Pair this with an equally rich and robust dish. (Stacy Briscoe)
