View more wines from Piedmont

Located in northwestern Italy near the Italian Alps, Piedmont is home to two of Italy's more famous wines: Barolos and Barbarescos. Each of these wines are made with the Nebbiolo grape, which is the premier red grape in the region. Other red grapes of note used in Piedmont include Barbera and Dolcetto. Among white wine grapes used in Piedmont are Moscatos, which are increasing in popularity here in the US. Piedmont's capital city Torino is also home to large productions of Vermouth, also made from Moscato.

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

The 2018 Sass Russ is absolutely gorgeous. Readers who enjoy Alto Piemonte wines will find much to like in the tension, energy and nuance here. Crushed leaves, tobacco, mint, dried cherry and herbs all come together in the glass, all framed by clean mineral notes that extend the finish beautifully. The 2018 is all subtlety and class. This is well-oaked, with layers of vanilla, toast and spice notes wrapped around plum, licorice and tar flavors. There is weight and power, with muscular tannins, yet an overriding sense of balance and harmony. Best from 2025 through 2040. 1,100 cases made, 500 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Bric Balin is a proprietor name for a 2.4-hectare site within the Muncagota cru. The Moccagatta 2018 Barbaresco Bric Balin is a beautifully dense and rich expression, with deep layers of dark fruit and plenty of steady intensity. it is powered by a 15% alcohol content that is not overly noticeable. The wine is structured and tight with an especially developed texture and structure that adds to the wine’s overall length and staying power. The Bric Balin shows an elegant, firm and well-etched side of the vintage and offers us a fine wine from Moccagatta. Some 4,800 bottles were released.

This silky Barolo is marked by macerated cherry, strawberry, rose hip and a hint of tamarind. The tannins are interwoven so well, this is almost seamless. Very drinkable now, yet the compact finish suggests waiting a few years. Fine length. Best from 2025 through 2040. 800 cases made, 300 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Smoky incense lifts from the 2018 Barolo San Giuseppe, followed by notes of palo santo, sage, and red cherry. Medium bodied on the palate, with fine but present tannins and notes of pomegranate, tea leaf, and orange rind, it is attractive and structured for the vintage. Drink 2025–2040. (Audrey Frick)

Lots of forest floor and mild spice to the dried-cherry notes on the nose. Medium-to full-bodied with a tight, focused core of dried red fruit and an underlay of very fine tannins. Tight finish. Tasty and racy. The tannins pull on the finish for now. Give it until 2024 to unwind a little. (James Suckling)

Domenico Clerico Barolo | del Comune di Monforte d'Alba 2018 / 750 ml.

del Comune di Monforte d’Alba
2018 / 750 ml.

Item #: 99350

RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 11th Aug 2022
The team at Domenico Clerico interprets this vintage with elegance and intensity. These two contrasting descriptors can be applied to the 2018 Barolo del Comune di Monforte d’Alba, which shows excellent balance overall. The bouquet reveals dark fruit, ferrous earth, licorice and grilled herb. But you also get lifted aromas of wild roses and violets over a generous, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel. (Monica Larner)
JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, October 2, 2022
Tight and focused on the nose with clean red berries and oak. Expands a little on the medium-to full-bodied palate, but still rather closed, with an elegant framework of very fine, lightly firm tannin and a dense core of fruit. The balance of fruit and tannin already gives a long finish. Needs to unravel a bit, but the essential ingredients are very fine indeed. Try from 2024.

The E. Pira e Figli - Chiara Boschis 2018 Barolo Cannubi is a lovely wine with a classic playlist of true Nebbiolo aromas. This certified organic wine exhibits wild berry, rose, dried lilac and an earthy touch of white truffle. However, the floral aromas and the lifted fruit are the protagonists in this balanced expression. Chiara farms less than one hectare (just over 6,000 square meters) in the celebrated Cannubi MGA with ancient calcareous clay soils from the Miocene era. Production is limited to 3,594 bottles. This is one of the best wines of the vintage. (Monica Larner)
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2022
Elegant and seamless for such a young red, exhibiting rose, cherry, mint, menthol and mineral flavors. Firm yet balanced and long, with echoes of cherry and menthol on the saline finish. Best from 2025 through 2042. 800 cases made, 100 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, October 2, 2022
Deep and seductive on the nose and palate with crushed red berries and a soft mineral base. Full-bodied with very silky tannins that are already melded into the wine. More linear, drinkable quality to this in 2018. From organically grown grapes. Compact and delicious even now, but better with another year in bottle. (James Suckling)
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022
The 2018 Barolo Cannubi is soft, open-knit and gracious, as wines from this vintage tend to be. Silky contours and pliant fruit add to its appeal and overall immediacy. The 2018 is a real charmer. It’s understated personality will be easy to appreciate upon release. Sweet red cherry, cinnamon, mint, cedar and dried rose petal linger nicely, with pretty sweet floral rotes that continue to open over time. (Antonio Galloni)
