Where It's From

District / Sonoma County

View more wines from Sonoma County

Sonoma County, just north of San Francisco is one of California's most famous wine districts. While sometimes overshadowed by the reputation of its rival and neighbor, Napa Valley, Sonoma County has a longer history of viticulture and is twice the size of the former.

Thanks in part to a strong diversity of climates within Sonoma County, the district is home to outstanding examples from a whole host of grapes. Sonoma County Pinot Noirs are considered some of the finest in the state, and the Dry Creek Valley Zinfandels are remarkable. Chardonnays come in a variety of styles thanks to the varying temperatures in Sonoma County, and Cabernets and Merlots also thrive here.

Some of the more celebrated viticultural areas in Sonoma County include Sonoma Mountain, Sonoma Coast, Chalk Hill, Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Carneros (parts of which fall within Napa Valley).

Region / California

View more wines from California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Country / United States

View more wines from United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Martini’s 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley comes from a multitude of Gallo-owned properties and includes about one-fourth purchased fruit. Marked by notes of almost peppery-spicy oak and ripe cassis, it’s full-bodied, ripe and generous, still not that rich or textured but a clear step up from Martini’s Sonoma County Cabernet, with a long, mouthwatering finish. RP88+88–90 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 4th May 2023
If my math on the provided vineyard sourcing is correct, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is about two-thirds estate-grown and one-third purchased from other growers. Aged in 25% new French oak, it’s faintly herbal, with primary fruit notes of cassis and black cherries. It’s a medium to full-bodied effort, a little tannic and austere at this stage, with a dusty finish. For the suggested retail price, it’s a solid value in Napa. (Joe Czerwinski)

RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jan 2019
Made of 100% Cabernet aged 21 months in 93% new French oak, the deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Lot 1 comes bounding out of the glass with energetic notes of crushed blueberries, cassis and black cherry compote with hints of lilacs, baking spices, cedar chest and potpourri. Full-bodied and wonderfully velvety in the mouth, it delivers mouth-filling perfumed black fruit and has a compelling herbal lift to the long finish. 1,308 cases produced.
WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 1/1/2020
This is a powerhouse wine, surprisingly soft and supple on the palate, with firm, integrated tannins and hearty oak. Cedar, pencil shavings and sweet tobacco provide savory complexity on the midpalate, accenting a core of concentrated red currant and plum. The finish is a mix of black pepper and dark chocolate.

A firm, juicy red with blackberries, chocolate and light tobacco. Some vanilla. Medium to full body. Round tannins. Fruity and fresh. Drink now.
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 8/1/2020
Tones of plum, currant and dark cherry carry this smooth, rounded red. Supple tannins underline it all, alongside a hearty dose of toasted oak.
RP8888 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 9th Apr 2020
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley features bold notes of warm cassis, blackberry pie and redcurrant jelly with touches of bay leaves, mossy tree bark and menthol plus a hint of crushed rocks. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a firm, rugged texture and oodles of freshness lifting the generous fruit to a long finish. 16,258 cases were made.

A soft, juicy red with licorice and aniseed undertones to the blueberries and sage. Candy. Medium to full body with agility and elegance. Drinkable now, but better in 2022.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 10, 2021
A rich, lush style, with creamed plum, blueberry and warmed blackberry compote flavors gliding along, laced with cocoa and warm earth notes. A black licorice note drapes over the fruit on the finish, and there’s a violet note hanging in the background. Large-scaled and well-defined. Best from 2022 through 2035. 1,272 cases made.
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 9th Apr 2020
Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Lot 1 (made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon) gives up loads of exotic spice notes — Chinese five spice, hoisin, fenugreek and cardamom — with a core of crème de cassis, prunes and plum pudding. Full-bodied, the decadently fruited palate has tons of spicy sparks and a chewy texture with chargrill notes on the finish. 1,300 cases were made.

SP95+95–98 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2020
Youthfully balled up, but there’s a ton of gorgeous cassis, raspberry and plum fruit, all of it kept in check right now thanks to a bolt of iron as riveting as I’ve seen in this wine. Barrel samples are often easily impressive, but this is way more than that.—Non-blind Louis M. Martini vertical (July 2020). (James Molesworth)
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2023
Well-built, with a dense core of red and black currant reduction flavors held in check for now, while iron-tinged sweet tobacco, warm earth and singed apple wood notes hold sway. Packs a muscular, racy structure that drives underneath, so just give this a bit more time to fully meld. Rock-solid, though. Best from 2025 through 2040. 1,350 cases made. (James Molesworth)
JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, January 14, 2022
Aromas of currants, blackberries, vanilla, walnuts and cedar. It’s full-bodied with firm, polished tannins. Plush, supple and textured with a deep core of dark fruit and spice. Vanilla, too. Rich and flavorful. Big, chewy wine. Try from 2023. (James Suckling)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022
Martini’s 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Rosso Vineyard has the site’s characteristic mint and herbal overtones, but it also offers deep cassis and plum notes. Full-bodied, ripe but firm, with typical Cabernet Sauvignon varietal austerity and reserve, framed by fine-grained, silky tannins that linger on the finish, it’s a classic example of Monte Rosso Cabernet. Ripe blueberries, black plums, herbs, toffee and milk chocolate on the nose. It’s full-bodied with firm, tight-grained tannins and bright acidity. Structured, deep and intense. Firm finish. Try from 2022.

JD9797 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/21/2021
Including 5% Merlot and checking in at 14.2% natural alcohol, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Cuvee sports a semi-opaque ruby hue to go with a classic, almost old-school Cabernet nose of red and black currants, chocolate, sandalwood, freshly sharpened pencils, and dried herbs. A more elegant, complex, nuanced Cabernet, it’s medium to full-bodied and has ripe yet building tannins, good acidity, and a great finish. All about purity, precision, and elegance, while not sacrificing intensity or richness, this gorgeous, Château Margaux-like Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be hidden for 4–5 years, if not a decade, and will drink brilliantly over the following 20–30 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
The 2019 Estate Cuvée offers tremendous density, power and textural intensity, almost shockingly so for these wines, especially compared to the 2018, which is its diametric opposite stylistically. The wine’s density and sheer tannic heft are imposing. There is just a bit of reduction that needs time to dissipate. Ripe red-fleshed fruit, sage, lavender, plum and mint flesh out in a Cabernet Sauvignon that marries power, density and energy. This is impressive, to say the least. (Antonio Galloni)
RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Jul 2021
A blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Cuvée has a deep purple-black color. It jumps out of the glass with exuberant scents of blueberry pie, plum preserves and blackberry compote plus hints of dark chocolate, violets and star anise. Medium to full-bodied, the palate shimmers with energetic black and blue fruits, supported by soft, velvety tannins and tons of freshness, finishing long and perfumed. Aged in 75% new French oak, the alcohol is a relatively modest 14.2%. 375 cases were made. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)

Ripe blackcurrants and blackberries, framed with notes of sweet vanilla, eucalyptus and chocolate. Full-bodied, soft and mellow. Polished tannins and a ripe fruit core with a long finish. Chewy at the end, with a cola undertone. Better from 2023.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022
Deep ruby-purple, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley offers lush blackcurrants and black cherries with touches of eucalyptus, milk chocolate, dried thyme and vanilla bean on the nose. The medium-bodied palate is soft and plush, with concentrated, chocolaty fruits and a long, spicy finish. (Erin Brooks)

A good value, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley has plenty of classic darker cassis and currant-like fruits as well as medium to full body, hints of spicy oak and tobacco, silky tannins, and outstanding length. Lovely cabernet notes of bell pepper, blackcurrants, blackberry leaves and cassis, together with some cocoa powder. I like the freshness. Medium body and creamy, powdery tannins. Juicy and extremely drinkable. 80% cabernet sauvignon, the rest merlot, cabernet franc, petit verdot and some malbec. Drink from 2023.
JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/10/2022
The base 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is certainly impressive, and since there are roughly 90,000 cases, it’s an incredible achievement. Classic darker currants, tobacco leaf, truffly earth, and spicy oak all define the bouquet, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with ripe tannins, terrific balance, and outstanding length. Based off 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec, buy a case and enjoy bottles over the coming 10–15 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2022
A solid, forthright Cabernet, with cedar and warm stone notes framing the core of gently steeped black currant and blackberry fruit. Savory and loam accents flash through the finish. Drink now through 2030. 90,500 cases made. (James Molesworth)
