Where It's From

Region / Ribera del Duero

View more wines from Ribera del Duero

Ribera del Duero is one of Spain's most celebrated wine regions, producing high-end Tempranillos and more. Located along the Duero river (which turns into the Douro river when it flows into Portugal), the region gained acclaim for its powerful Tempranillos (called Tinto Fino), which are typically dark and tannic.

Country / Spain

View more wines from Spain

The picturesque countryside of Spain is littered with vineyards large and small, and offers up some of the best value available on the wine market today. You can consistently fine critically-acclaimed Spanish wines selling for less than their counterparts from other wine-producing countries. The Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions are most famous, and there's nowhere else in the world where you'll find as many world-class Tempranillos.

The 2020 Cyclo feels quite different from the 2019 I tasted next to it. It comes from three plots of old vines that have a majority of Tempranillo and some 10% other traditional varieties that are intermixed in the field in the old vineyards. This is perfumed, expressive, floral and extroverted, with much better integrated oak and a velvety and juicy mouthfeel. I don’t know what happened between 2019 and this 2020, but this has a very different profile—a lot more elegant, complex and balanced. It’s slightly lower in alcohol, 14.5%, and is ripe without excess. 10,000 bottles were filled in October 2022. (Luis Gutiérrez)

The red blend 2019 Cyclo was produced with Tempranillo and some 10% between Garnacha, Cariñena, Viura and Albillo. It fermented with full clusters in concrete and indigenous yeasts, foot trodden, and it matured in oak barrels. It’s quite ripe and heady at 15% alcohol with generous oak, spice and smoke and quite a lot of tannin. It’s still tannic. Give it some more time. 10,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2021. (Luis Gutiérrez)

Nervy nose with white pepper, dark cherries, violets and a touch of black tea. Chewy and fresh on the palate, with a medium to full body and a medium-long, tight-grained finish. Drink from 2025. (Zekun Shuai)
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 13th Jun 2024
The red 2022 Montecastrillo was produced with 90% Tempranillo and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon from younger vines, fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and matured in 225-liter barrels for eight months. It has good ripeness, 14.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.75. It’s medium-bodied and approachable, with fine tannins, finishing with fruit-driven flavors. It keeps the poise in this warm and dry year. 113,000 bottles and 3,500 magnums produced. It was bottled in November 2023. (Luis Gutiérrez)

RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jan 2023
2019 was warm and dry, and the wines are powerful and quite tannic, as I see in the 2019 Los Cantos de Torremilanos, which coupled with a longer élevage (15 months in barrel) resulted in a tougher wine. It has concentration from low yields and keeps the freshness but with a dry finish and not enough fat. This is 100% Tempranillo; it was not a year for Merlot, which in other vintages represents a small percentage of this wine. This was bottled in January 2021, also because there was no availability of bottles… (Luis Gutiérrez)
